Warner has become an elite goal kicking midfielder that can impact games when resting forward. He's on track to kick over 30 goals, which is incredible.

Newcombe has regressed somewhat compared to last season. He has been inconsistent and hasn't proven that he can have an impact when resting forward - though I think he could, as he's strong overhead and is a penetrative kick from range.

Starting to change my tune on Newcombe. Watched him closely the last couple of months and can see why Hawthorn supporters rate him highly.

Starting to work himself into games when the chips are down and that is a great quality to have in a young player.

He’s just so strong and explosive, and when he gets into space he has a really nice and long kick. Impacts aerially (really strong hands) and his handskills are superb.

These two have finished quite similar once again from a statistical perspective.

Newk rocketed home with 19 coaches votes in the final 2 rounds to finish 15th overall (higher than last season).

Warner wins his first All Australian blazer.

The big thing setting these two apart at the moment is Warner's ability to hit the scoreboard. Had an insane season forward of centre for a genuine full time midfielder.

Very excited to see both on the big stage in September.

Newcombe looks built for finals. Huge test against an elite midfield first up next Friday night.

Warner is still ahead on body of work, but The Duke is rapidly closing the gap.

Surely the next captain of Hawthorn (I think him or Will Day would be a great choice), his ferocious attack on the ball and appetite to win the contested possession really is impressive.
I take my hat off to him and Hawthorn fans, I think I really underestimated Newcombe and his talents.

It's probably between Moore or Day as next captain. I'd personally go Moore.

Yeah, great start to finals football for Newcombe.

More coaches votes (10) in his first final than Warner has received in his 6 finals (0). Be more in the second too.

Some cheeky cherry picking here, but Newk also averages more touches in finals (33) than Warner has ever had in a final (best of 29, ave of 20).

Not sure how you can say "it's not close"

They're the same age (Newcombe slightly younger) and...
Newcombe has more coaches votes this season and more in his career.
They have the exact same number of Brownlow votes
Newcombe gets more of the ball, more contested ball, more clearances, is a much better user (disposal efficiency and kicking efficiency), more marks and more tackles.
Warner kicks more goals and has more metres gained.

I think it's been neck and neck over their careers so far (especially when you consider Newcombe has attracted taggers whereas Warner is like third in line so has had little work put into him comparatively).

This is all that needs to be said.

You can't go wrong with either of them really.

I actually didn't expect them to both be top 10 in the overall coaches votes for the season (including finals) when I started this thread.

Genuine A grade midfielders when we start 2025. Would love to see them against each other in a big final next year.

Both were also not picked in the high end of the national draft either (Jai a midseason rookie draft pick from Box Hill)

Always good to see stars of the game not drafted in the first round, Newcombe's success is testament to being bit of a late developer and hard worker, hard to believe Warner fell to 39 in his draft year though
.
It's no coincidence that Sydney and Hawthorn are excellent at developing young players and draftees (aside from the occasional disappointment, but no club is perfect)
