Still seething with the Hypocrisy here;
AFL has a $10 mill gambling sponsorship deal - so it is pro gambling.
But not for players -
When in the history of sports sponsorship was a sponsors product specifically BANNED for use by players?

Further - apparently there is a process by which AFL betting can be blocked to any individual the AFL deems at risk of football betting.

So why hasn't the AFL implemented this - isn't this a mitigating factor here?
How can the AFL seriously suggest betting is banned for players, while intentionally allowing an open back door?

Bottomline - the kid is silly but penalty doesn't fit the crime and AFL has not taken any responsibility for its own culpability.

Players are not banned from gambling, they are entitled to bet on anything they like outside of Footy

Same for Cricketers, Jockey's, Soccer, Rugby etc etc

Just ignore him mate... Bloke is clueless and has no idea what leadership is.
Apparently it's helping someone break the rules.

Nice.
Once again it depends on the crime and how you would advise someone to go forward.
If no one else was hurt by their actions then it's all about teaching them the right way to go forward with their lives, how they should behave, how they should conduct themselves.

You don't have to subject him to ridiculous penalties to teach him this.
You can achieve this through personal intervention, real friendship and continued guidance.
People do this all the time, even if it means not following all the rules. (Remember these are rules imposed by a sporting body, not police charges).
The result is hopefully a wiser and better young man.
And no one got hurt, by his actions, or your support and guidance.

It's something I'd hope a friend would do for me, putting themselves out there for me, showing real care for me.
It's something I would hope I'd do for others.

That my friend is real friendship ....... real leadership.

You have your version, I'm more than comfortable with mine.

Try and play nice now.

The focus on that torp causes me some dismay.

Yep, rightly or wrongly, that beautiful goal is probably tainted forever. Opposition fans will never let this one go, and who could blame them. Will be taken down from the 2019 highlights reel, and likely feature in footy trivia nights for years to come. Sad.

On another topic, I like what I'm hearing from the club. The support for Howe, but more importantly the support for Stevo.

Our club may stuff up with unseemly regularity, but when we do we own it, dont lay blame elsehwere, and get on with addressing it.

Nothing hypocritical about it at all. You can’t bet on games if you’re a player .

Obviously don't agree with what he did.. but seriously.. does one dob a mate in for travelling 5ks over the speed limit. $12 bets for crying out loud. Not gorilla bets. And 3 games? Stop it.. and don't do it again. And it's done.

May as well snitch on players who take party drugs.. what the hell is the difference. Clubs and the players are aware of which players are on the Cheech n Chong and shit like that. Why don't they go and report their own to the AFL.

The hell you think I'd report it to the afl.

Think Collingwood, AFL, and Jordy got their responses correct to Jordy messing-up

Big frauds and big corruption typically begin with a person excusing a small breach. This mindset is then a gateway to bigger breaches

The AFL is open to the charge of hypocrisy because it floods the viewer with gambling advertising (mute the dirge if the kids haven't lost the phucking remote)

But this revenue helps fund higher player salaries - would the AFLPA advocate no gambling advertising?

And Howe? Great leadership - he knew exactly the right thing to do. So much growth since frisbygate

Glad we have a club that behaved honourably with long-term values in place (FU Carlton and Essendon)

PS Brian Taylor is 1.01 to behave like a tool in the commentary box this week

Its because we have had so much practice stuffing up that addressing it we have down to a fine art now. :drunk:

There's not one day that goes by where we don't inadvertently break the law.. speeding is one of those.. go and self report yourselves to the police.. or report your mates for travelling over the limit. Use the Stepho case as an example. What a joke!

Stephenson is not a problem gambler.. hes an idiot for doing it for cheap thrills. Inadvertently broke the rules.

A good ol blasting from me.. and don't wanna see you do it again.

That's how I would have approached it.

Why hasn't the AFL blocked players' ability to bet of AFL when it is technically feasible?
Does our boy get pinged if this was blocked on his account?
Obviously the answer is no - so the AFL cant escape some responsibility here.

Stephenson was stupid enough to let it slip to his teammates. If he let it slip once there’s every risk it would have slipped again in the future Sooner or later somebody was going to blab either accidentally or out of spite.

Thank god howe was there to encourage self reporting and save the kid s much heftier penalty

Yes the country has turned to hell because Stephenson had a multi and hurt no one but himself.
Perspective.
Don't assume that I agree with your premise that the country has gone to hell. I don't think any of it is a big deal - from Stevo's indiscretion through to the penalty, through to some bloke being told to quieten down at the footy, through to whatever else people are claiming is making the sky fall in. Although as I did point out the other day, I've lost one of my socks. **** you Gil. **** you AFL you cheating bunch of sock stealing mother****ers.

I just found a sock. Equilibrium.

Be some big name players with more then 3 Strikes

Worry about Stephenson Mental Health with Media and Opposition Fans ****ting on him

Rule 1: Spend as much time as possible at the club, getting support from teammates, being a good teammate without playing.
Rule 2: Avoid media.
Rule 3: Most important, avoid social media and repositories of toxicity like BF.

If he follows those rules and maintains a bit of resilience, he'll get through the storm a stronger person.

The AFL have a compulsory session every year where players are told betting on Footy is banned.

How would your solution have stopped Stevo? He gave the $ to his mate who placed the bet on his account
Blocking Stevo from using his own account would not have stopped this from happening

Stevo (while I concede he is young) is an adult, he is allowed to bet on 99.99% of all other sports, if he cannot restrain himself from betting on Footy, knowing that, for him, it is 'illegal' to do so then I'm afraid he must accept the consequences of his actions if he decides to bet

Although I love the kid, the person to rightly blame here is Stevo, not Howe, not the Club and certainly not the AFL

FWIW I think this will be the making of the kid, its a hard lesson, but he will come through it well

Thank goodness you’re not banned from gambling on the footy.
The industry would struggle without your regular gorillas.

Isn't the hypocrisy the fact that the AFL has banned AFL betting, but not taken the needed measures to ensure players comply by blocking such betting on their accounts?
Its like telling a child to never touch a gun, but you leave one lying around the house hoping the kid does the right thing.

Isn't it hypocrisy that AFL understands gambling is a huge issue amongst AFL players, that has manifestly affected the lives of players such as Schwarz and Fevola to name a few, but happily accepts betting sponsorship money from the same companies that facilitate this addiction.

When the AFL allows wall to wall advertising on TV of AFL odds, is it any wonder young kids are discussing gambling at a much earlier age than in the past, which will be clearly problematic in the future. But again the AFL is completely undeterred and avoids the issue as there is Sponsorship money involved.

The AFL parades its self as a fine upstanding Corporate citizen, but condones gambling.

There is hypocrisy all over this issue IMO.
