Oh god this is going to turn into a respect for women conversation. Spare me the faux empathy AFL.

The reason this has got out of hand and become truly destructive is as a result of the media giving the topic oxygen, should never have left the field ffs. The media commentators that have given their two bobs worth are just as much to blame as Jake/whoever for causing Murphy's family, in particular his wife, distress. Now we have to cop a week long of these same commentators lecturing everyone to respect women.

Yep, spot on again.

If our journalists actually took their profession seriously and get off their lazy arses and stop trawling through social media for stories, this ridiculous turn of events since Saturday wouldn't have happened. That's all journalism is nowadays, idiots writing a few lines and then embedding a number of tweets into their pathetic articles.

This whole ridiculous episode just shows the depths our media has plumbed to. It's just a footy incident that has happened thousands of times but these lazy hacks have decided to make it their story if the week.

A few questions I have:

If the sledges were so bad, why did Murphy not react earlier? Why did he only react once a player was injured on the ground?

If these sledges were said throughout the game, why did no other Carlton player fly the flag for him?

The moment Murphy gave it to Jake our players were all over him. I loved seeing that.

I personally haven't seen any of our players fly the flag for our club in a very long time. Fired us up and got us home. I think in a way it showed a sign that our boys are maturing.

This is gonna rile some people but f**k it.

I think it's over the top if people are saying this reflects badly on finnis, the guy is the most progressive CEO in the biz. I think the idea that centres around a lot of this is: if a guy gets around he's a stud, if a girl gets around she's a s**t.

One of the main reasons why it's a big thing is because she's unhappy, and she's unhappy because our current social environment still s**t shames women, so to be associate with that idea - being 'easy' and having that kind of past - impacts her self worth.

So yeah, don't rag on chicks for gettin laid - to them, their partners, their friends, whatever, it's not cool.

That doesn't mean murphy isn't a dog weak p.o.s. that started it, got dumped on his ass and couldn't get another touch. Because he is. He's up there with the worst captains of the 21st century. His team is full of squibs, because he's a squib.

Geary is a f****n captain

Yeah it shows that Carlisle must be well liked and respected amongst the playing group when they were all willing to go into bat for him.

They seem to be building a really tight knit group which is great to see and hopefully an incident like this just makes them even closer.

Looks like Murphy might have taken a knife to a gun fight and gone crying to Mummy when someone actually fired back, but damn it was dumb of Jake to like that tweet.

Richo and the club would be furious, especially as he'd just been on 360 and said how we overstepped the line and need to be better. Jake liking that tweet has made Richo look stupid and has definitely set us back as far as killing off the media storm goes.

I blame Rors for all this though.

This. I defended murphy numerous times before this incident but not anymore. it just speaks volumes about his character.

We all knew Carlisle was a bit immature and daft at times but geeze atleast he stands up for himself. Murphy just comes off immature and cowardly. Happy to dish it out, laughs it off when directed at him but the he ****s up sledging an injured player so he looks for the out. Sums him up his career pretty well. Doesnt say boo to ghost until Carlisle looks to be out injured and can't respond.

The difference between Geary and Murphy is like chalk and cheese. Youd feel confident and empowered running out with gears knowing he doesn't take a backward step when faced with adversity. Murphy on the other hand looks for the out. It's pathetic.

The most disappointing thing about this is it appears some men still see women as possessions and lose their shit when confronted with the reality that their partner was sexually active before they met.

Murph mate hate to break it to ya but you weren't the first. It's not a big deal. If someone wants to be an arseh*le and try and insult you over it just move on. It's highly probable the person sledging you wasn't the first either. It's life. ****in deal with it. It's not the 1950s anymore.

Interesting spin. I don't disagree with a lot. I certainly agree that at the very least, Gears defended his teammate. Another poster in another thread claimed that Murphy had a long time to respond and chose a moment where his target was incapacitated, which does seem pretty weak. What's also weak is if any other Carlton players were around and heard or saw Murphy bring unfairly treated with didn't any of them stick up for their captain? Maybe that's the reason why we're getting stronger while they are not.

Just away from this issue, i don't think anyone would look at Murphy's career and think he was a great captain. What has his club achieved on his watch? I think I'd rather have Geary than him in my team, and I'm sure we've got the better captain.

I think you all need to take a step back.
The reaction to this is now bordering on hysterical.

If this is what football has now come to, its time to reevaluate if it is worth it.
The incredible pettiness of this is really pathetic.
We have the doyen of morals in the Careys and Lyons tut tutting and finger wagging.
We have supporters of the club about to top themselves because a player liked then unliked a tweet.
All perspective gone. Wilson and co moralising for 20 minutes then cut to the Ben Johnson ad.

Hypocricy writ large

Has anyone asked the question;

How did it get into the media that JC allegedly sledged MM about his wife?

It wouldn't have been because MM & Carlton were in damage control & threw Mrs M under the bus so the blame could be pushed JC & StK's way could it?

We know that Purple was the first to report it & that he'd gone to the CFC media manager. All of a sudden it's everywhere that MM's wife was the target.

Indeed. Media stir shit and then dance in it, then turn the music up louder, that's their job. Time to stop listening.

And log out of BF for a while!

I know what you mean, but it seems though those days might be behind us and people are ready to be a little less personal, especially around delicate emotional issues. You never know what's in the head of the player. Best to just stick to funny stuff I'd think.
Sadly human nature doesn't change and this will go on while people are forced into fierce, unrelenting competition in order to win. Mind you, regardless of what is said on the field, that is where it should stay.

Different era now. Maybe for the VFL that's ok, but not with close ups, micked up umpires and social media.

Were discussing the sledge on SEN. Saying it was highly upsetting for Mrs. Murphy, etc. Then played Carey audio of him saying that rumours had been going around a couple of years now but had been proven false. Carey confirmed he had been told by MM he wasnt mentioned in sledge. Carey in constant contact last 18 months or so with MM since rumours surfaced. Carey said MM is Highly Distressed ATM.
If rumours have been around for 2yrs, WHY IS MM SO DISTRESSED NOW!

Sam Mclure came on and mentioned Jake liking "SOMEONE'S" () tweet about MM just being a whinger. Garry Lyon commented at end of subject that tweet was removed in a heartbeat.
SO WHY IS THIS A STORY MCLURE?? PUSHING YOUR OWN BARROW IS WHY!!

Talk then turned to Gears and Richo saying that we "probably" overstepped the mark. SEN guys saying it wasn't good enough for women, etc. Then the sexist BS started- Saints trying to get a Womens team, Peta Searle, etc. Not good enough by Saints they said. Then said AFL need to make an announcement/statement, they can't say nothing because of AFLW, First lady CEO, First Lady Umpire.

They then went to callers, first bloke said they were only reporting it for the gains in the media, there was so much good footy to talk about instead.
Second was a lady who said it was a storm in a tea cup and need to move on. Asked her what she did- Hospitality. Hamish asked if someone abused her family as she served them, how would she feel? "This is on a footy field!" She said. Need to get over it......

Then they read some texts and there was a groud swell of them saying to get on with footy and that everyone was over the subject! So they changed topic and said they will leave it there.
The way in which they moved on was like they had been given a huge slap by the audience and they changed tack quick smart. I think it may be in our favour that the media have over publicised this and that the majority of the footy public realise it is being beaten to death and are over it.

She's an absolute idiot, making out it was all Carlisle and St Kilda's fault like our players are the only ones that have ever sledged on a footy field before.

Similar stuff and worse would have been said in just about every game but because it ended up in a melee the media have beat it up into another PC scandal.

What shits me is the media people like Wilson are aware of the landscape which is impossible to compare to what we live. I know two women who jokingly call them selves footy sluts and proudly make conquests of football players. These aren't naive school girls, one was engaged to a footballer and is a lawyer. Both have had a lot of footballers from guys who played 2 games to superstars and ex players.

Both are close to 40 now and are slowing down but I know the penis sizes of several current players and their bedroom habits, I'm guessing I'm not the only one who has heard it all and I can guarantee that any of the footy fan girls that are in relationships with players have more than likely had several players sleep with them. I find the whole victorian era moralising a bit rich, a good percentage of the WAGs would have had multiple footballer partners. I would be very common to sledge based on that.

Poor Gangnam Saint

Who hurt you? Don't worry there is someone out there who will love you for the "nice guy" you are.

Come on man, you are meant to be the forum psychologist, petty baiting doesn't bring people around to your view point. Especially when you are sledging because you find sledging below the belt.

Credit has to go to Carlton and Murphy for shaping the narrative in their favour. If only Jake/St Kilda got on the front foot about hurtful/damaging/insensitive personal sledges about drug addiction before they got the 'sexism/respect for women' spin going, it would be a different story all together.

Jake is bad, but for some reason i like him.

If it wasn't for Purple it would have stayed on the footy field and some people would have got fined for melee.
Any damage which has been done to Murphy and his family was done by Purple.

Jake is immature , foolish and a bit bad.
For some reason i like him though, probably because he's an honest sort of guy.
