No one will ever be innocent when it comes to sledging. However, you will often find that those who sling mud yet can't handle it will always come out on top, whilst the player with the honourable stance suffers, due to the former crying poor to the media.

Unfortunately, St Kilda have poor history with scandals (thanks to the media, largely, though) thus would be sledged more than others. Imagine if our players did the same thing and cried foul; there'd be a news story every week if Milne was as emotionally soft as Murphy.

So basically he got one upped and cracked the sads.

All this week there's been players saying everyone knows where to draw the line and tbh I think that's more bullshit than truth.

Mumford gave buddy a mental illness spray and for sure it would've been a sly dig at the drug rumors about him...don't see that being wound up by the media like this whole problem is......then Carey and Darcy both say there was nothing in it and stop being precious as what's on the field stays on the field
Bet that tunes changed now for them.....gotta go along with what everyone else says when the whole sporting country is talking about it otherwise you'll get turned on by your peers

Fmd
The whole thing couldve been kept in house
But no...runs past gives a gob full and then flags are flown.......of course it's going to come out

So personal insults about past mistakes and drug use are ok, even though that might be quite painful for the player now, struggling time in his life etc etc, couldve had some probs mentally...like Budd, who knows, murph doesn't...slagged him about it anyway
Then goes all cockahoot when someone tells him someone mouths about his mrs

But apparently, according to Goddard, there's a line (pun not intended)

**** off
Mate...

Firstly, two wrongs don't make a right.

Secondly, Murphy should have channelled his anger to his game and played a blinder in the last.

Let's drop this "he started it" bullshit.

Life isn't fair.

It's got nothing to do with who started it
Im just sick of this unwritten rule bullcrap....

I've heard some decent sledges, there is no line

I don't care who said what first
You either give one back or jog on and laugh

He got given one back
Then cracked the sads

There is no line

Anyhoo I'm kinda over it like you prob are
I'm moving on to us flogging the Swans

My question is why do the saints have a poor history with scandals?
Why are all our scandals blown out of proportion?

Essendon drug cheats.
Carlton adelaide salary cap cheats.
Norths star player ****ed his captains wife.
Hawthorn captain drink driver.
Hawthorn players sexual assault in taxi.
Hawks coach punches a supporter.
Collingwood president racist.
Plenty of other drug/sexual/gambling/corruption scandals all over the afl.
Why are we singled out by the media as the "scandal club".

Marc Murphy incites an all in brawl... St kilda scandal.

No doubt that the media has a role in this, which I mentioned.

There's some kind of sick, prophetic irony in this situation.

Murphy chose to sledge Carlisle when he was not in a position to retaliate.
In the fallout, Carlton blast St Kilda in the media because they lack the presence to respond.

Credit has to go to Carlton and Murphy for shaping the narrative in their favour. If only Jake/St Kilda got on the front foot about hurtful/damaging/insensitive personal sledges about drug addiction before they got the 'sexism/respect for women' spin going, it would be a different story all together.
Yep, or should have held his jumper while sledging him - just a jumper sledge.

For me,
Rather than particular 'events' or topics being declared on or off limits... i think the 'line' can be drawn by looking at the culpability of whoever you're sledging- that is how much or little control the target has/had.

For example, wives/gfs/cheating should be off limits (over the line) for a guy like murph... because he couldn't do much about his mrs allegedly cheating.

But the wives/gfs/cheating should be well and truly in the limits for a guy like carey, because he had a lot of control over that situation.

Same applies to race gender etc- that stuff is out of the control of the 'target' therefore off limits.

TL DR-
"make your bed, lie in it" is a pretty good rule of thumb with this stuff.
If you didn't make the bed- you shouldn't be told to lie in it.

The real sledge was pertaining to her number of relations with other footballers, including those that have played for St Kilda.

In that essence, the sledge is attacking Murphy's choice to be with someone after many of his peers have. If Murphy sees no problem in that action, then fair enough, but others will pot him for it. No different to someone that sees no problem with, say, drug use and then being criticised for doing it.

The issue is dead and buried for me BUT what is really pissing me off is ....
Our club and players getting a bad name and its driven by moron ex players in the media throwing pebbles when they themselves are the lowest form of life with little regard for anyone except for themselves .
Spot on. Tell me Paul Roos wasn't trying to do the Swans a favour with his comments.

Nailed it :thumbsu:

Just an aside on Mr Morals Stephen Trigg

"Trigg was suspended for six months by the AFL at the end of the 2012 premiership season for his role in a breach of AFL salary cap laws involving key forward Kurt Tippet, who is now with the Sydney Swans."

Salary Cap breacher CEO of the Brown Baggers, giving morality lectures from the pulpit.

So we have

Lyon
Carey
Trigg
All on their moral high horse.

The dripping irony

When Heath Shaw, Shane Mumford and Mitch Clark (even Will Minson) over stepped the 'line' with sledges was there such moral outrage or am I feeling this more because it involves a Saints player?
Sometimes I just wish I could get on those panels and ask the questions they are afraid to eg. last night on FC with Caro. I couldn't believe that she got away with saying that personal sledging of Carlisle over drugs wasn't as bad as what was said to Murphy. Her reasoning was that the Carlisle stuff was already out there in the public domain. Excuse me....there aren't degrees of poor behaviour here. It's either all equally wrong or all fair game. Take your choice.

Using her logic if a player was having an affair with another player's missus and it was all public knowledge (like Carey and Stevens) then it would be ok to sledge about it on the ground. I don't think so.

This. It will be twisted by others into an attack on her though when really it is a shot at Murphy. Murphy also made the choice to be with her so he knew full well what kind of banter he would cop.

If Murphy was cheated on and ended a relationship because of it I would feel sledging him about it crosses the line.

If he chooses marry someone after they have been with multiple AFL players he knows what he would likely cop on the field about it.

Hypothetically if she has bedded many AFL players and dumped one shortly after being delisted thus showing many gold digger red flags... I do not disrespect someone who plays the game of gaining an online profile and has dalliances with multiple AFL players until one marries her. She has acted in her self interest. Murphy is the joke in that situation not her.

Does this mean it is an attack on women? I am sure some will try and twist it that way.
