And if we're guaranteed to finish top four next year.

"Sure, we're going great! Our 2018 first-rounder won't even be that early!"

Someone will have to have their nuts cut off if that backfires and we cough up an early pick next year. Unless we're offering our 2018 second-rounder, not our first-rounder, in which case it's high fives all round.

I reckon that's what the haggling would be about - Eagles 2018 1st or Second coming back...

Even if we won the flag next year (lol) we'd still have pick 18 in a superdraft.

If it's anything like 2001 that is still a really good chance of an elite 10 year star.

The fact he needed to say "I'm not going back" for some to finally believe that is incredible.

Gets Whacked by Beveridge, gets whacked by Murphy, then everything comes out and people still thought he was staying? Straight up some people need to develop a bit of nuance.

Develop a bit of nuance? If your going to be a smart*rse at least say sh*t that makes a little bit of sense!

The circuit breaker club can often reap the benefits of facilitating a trade in deadlocks like this. Look at St Kilda last year.
Yeah but under the reported scenario, WC are the ones gambling on their future pick in a reportedly strong 2018 draft.

To justify such a risk, there needs to be a delicious sweetener.

I found this quite amusing. Apparently next year's draft has 'one of the best talent pools in recent years' which explains the Dogs sacrificing picks this year but the Eagles staff are blind to this fact and are happy to trade away picks from this superdraft.
Maybe WC expect FA’s Gaff and McGovern to move on or be traded. So based off Motlop you should get pick 19 for Gaff next year

2018 first round back in for WC

You have quotes to back that up?

A lot of absolute BS being stated in this thread as fact.

Doesn't really help. The idea would be to get a pick higher than Rhylees nomination pick and get him with our second. Hard to guess, but I would say he would go 10-15 from what I know.
With two first round picks next year we would have the option of trading up ahead of his likely range.

We might end up with two first rounders ahead of him, and FS & academy picks attract a 20% discount. If we didn't have West next year I doubt we would have bothered.

As an aside, West Coast and the Bulldogs were the first clubs to swap draft picks as soon as the AFL allowed it. We downgraded a second rounder we were on-trading to Adelaide for Ben Hudson, win/win for WCE & Bulldogs. Clearly still have a productive relationship.

It's not as easy as that though, I think you're thinking of the old system. Now you can only use live picks, so if they use 3-4 picks at 30+ they need 3-4 spots on the list and fill them with even later picks or DFAs.
Ja, changed to stop GWS & GCS academy rorting. Amazing they couldn't foresee that loophole when they designed the system in the first place.

Mmm, there was also carlton last year i suppose - weird and seemingly unexplainable assistance.

The article does mention you're heavily replacing players this year so it might make sense to get those extra picks rather than draft too deep.

Surely WC are not silly enough to get involved here unless the deal is heavily in their favour?

There's no sense whatsoever putting a future first-rounder on the table in a non-critical deal. As the third party doing some draft pick exchanges, such a risk would be indefensible.

Thanks for your naunce buddy. Thanks for showing us your nuance by providing the quotes where Bevo and Murphy have whacked him. Thanks for showing us your nuance by telling us he will sit out for a year rather than play football at the Dogs. I hope I can only develop nuance as good as yours.
Murphy - “I find that jarring. I can’t quite see how that would possibly be,” on Stringer being "shocked and upset".

I'm not arguing he would have sat out the year. I'm arguing he was never staying because the Western Bulldogs had zero interest in keeping him. Grant saying they would hold onto him was just talk to try and build value. Never a chance to stay. If he was he wouldn't be going for second rounders.

I welcome the extra picks this year. I do not however welcome trading out a future first-rounder for the sake of it.

Things between the clubs have obviously changed since the 90s. I remember dogs-eagles was a must see match for a while there. All eyes on Southern...

Mate if your coach publicly stating your need for a fresh start else where isn't a whack, if your captain publicly describing his confusion as to your surprise about getting traded isn't a whack then what the hell is.

That’s the spirit!
I haven’t followed your drafting of late - have you had a few busts?
We do OK with safe, obvious first-rounders: Gaff, Sheppard, Sheed, Duggan.

But it's one big glory hole thereafter. It's just a bunch of dicks in the dark.
