Should James Hird be given a second chance at coaching an AFL club?

I think Hird could come in as an Assistant. Was one of the best all time players. Made a mistake. Essendon could do worse than invite him back in an Assistant coaching capacity.

Use Lewis and Walls to find someone to be coach. Club selects Hird as an assistant.

After 2 years knife the coach and Hird takes over.

Or just offer Lewis and Walls a huge pile of cash to choose Hird.

Failed in his duty of care. Like Pyke, shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a kid again.
I agree that Pyke (and Burton) completely ****ed up with the camp. And that means they have a cross to bear, deserve time out and need to rebuild trust.

but don’t for one second put them in the category of Hird. Masterminding and overseeing a systematic doping programme means Hird does not deserve any chance at redemption.

Failed Coach turned tragic Coach king maker Tim Watson has backed up and is more or less calling for Hird's appointment as a coach.

When Gary Lyon pointed to Voss having gone and done the hard yards Watson came up with confected nonsense about his overseas travels and abilities to connect with players.
Well that bit is true. Hird can persuade players to the point of having unknown substances injected into their arms. What a leader!

There are 2 parts to what Hird did:
  • cheating in a sports competition
  • harming (or risking harming) young men in his care.

I would say the second is actually much more important and much worse than the first.

What Pyke and Burtin did with the camp was not attempting to cheat, but it did harm young men in their care. So it wasn’t as bad as what went on at the bombers, but it was similar in the most important respect. Although to be fair to Pyke, it sounds like his judgment was off in that crazy environment for the couple of days of the camp, whereas Hird made terribly unethical decisions in a cold, calculating way for months.

Pike has shown maturity, remorse and appologised more than once.

IMO he will coach again at the top level. Eagles in 2024 at the earliest.

If James Hird was a Chinese swimming coach I don't think we'd be hearing any calls for his redemption.
If Shayna Jack was a Russian swimmer her comeback "redemption" story would be told differently by our media.

Not sure Australian hypocrisy to doping is a strong argument against him getting another gig.

James Hird living rent free in peoples heads since 2013

Hird's lived in my head lots longer than that mate. He's in the top 5 players I've ever seen play the game.

There is plenty being made of Hird getting a "second chance" as though he was turfed out by ASADA or the AFL. People seem to forget he served his 12 month suspension in 2014. Mark Thompson stepped up and coached the Bombers to 12 wins (7th place)

Hird got his "second chance" in 2015...

James Hird "resigned" after the 112 point shellacking by the Crows in Round 20. But in reality, Essendon gave Hird the boot after a string of poor performances. Then they allowed him the dignity of publicly resigning.

Who was the last club to part ways with their failed their coach, and then rehire them after sacking their next 2 coaches?
Perhaps Richmond in the 1980's with Tony Jewell... Except he won the flag in 1980 and was sacked after the Tigers finished 7th in 1981
I can't really think of anyone else.
