I can’t see West Coast accepting compo of a mid-late teens pick for him.Gaff is a free agent.
I can’t see anyone trading for him?

I think the deal will look like this. Polec and pick 22/23 go to North. Pick 9/10 - whatever north's 1st this year is goes to Port. North will want the pick 22/23 from port to ensure they have the points for matching any bids on Thomas - essentially they get Polec and Thomas as their main targets this year. Port get the top 10 pick and give up polec and a secondGaff is a free agent.

Seems plausible.I think the deal will look like this. Polec and pick 22/23 go to North. Pick 9/10 - whatever north's 1st this year is goes to Port. If they match the bid I think he stays.I can’t see West Coast accepting compo of a mid-late teens pick for him.
He is not Adam Trelour. You won’t get two first round picks.A players worth is not determined by the initial offer it is determined by what other clubs offer. Your club has offered big $$ for one of our best players. So much so that in order to keep him we would have to do some big list management changes which would nearly be impossible with most of our players signed already, unless players agreed to leave so we could free salary cap space then we don’t have any way of making free space. Whether you agree or not, one of our best players, north offering big $$ and long contract. X2 first rounder is well in the picture.
What he will get and what port will ask for is to different thingsHe is not Adam Trelour. You won’t get two first round picks.
Ask as much as you like, but any ambit claim of first two rounders will be greeted with laughter. What he will get and what port will ask for is to different things
Looks about right.I think the deal will look like this. Polec and pick 22/23 go to North. Pick 9/10 - whatever north's 1st this year is goes to Port. Perhaps he does stay.If they match the bid I think he stays.
Dangerfield didn't leave for money.Perhaps he does stay.
But I see a Dangerfield style trade occuring. North can’t afford to leave a big name player high and dry if they had to trade for him. Would be a shocking look and impact their ability in the future to attract big names. I’m confident they will do the right thing.

West Coast won’t accept a late teens pick for him. There will be a trade involved and North would look stupid if West Coast put this to them and they refused.Dangerfield didn't leave for money.
Gaff, like everyone else, knows this is a business deal and the offer is only so big because he is a free agent.
Lol You think contracts always reflect talent and influence? You know Mayne played a year in the VFL for 500k, yeah?Obviously not considering Polec will reportedly be on more money then him
North will send their first to west coast in a gaff trade after the eagles offer to match with the money freed up from losing lycett. They aint taking compo for gaff at pick 16 or 17.

They might if Lycett leavesPeople keep sprouting this.
Who are they cutting if they do match it? You do realise North then have no obligation to trade for him, we can just walk away as well.
I'm not sure a club like West Coast at the pointy end has a spare $300k in the TPP to just match it.
If clubs can’t find a way for players to get to their club of choice, many players will be reticent to look to move there in the future. That happens if you burn players you are trying to woo.Err why would we look stupid?
If the whole viability of the deals revolves around not actually giving up anything and the deal becomes nonviable if we are paying $1.2m AND trade currency, why do we "look stupid" if we walk away from said deal?
In any kind of deal, wether real estate or business there is a point in which you just have to walk away.
It’s the whole Franklin scenario all over again. As if a club is going to care about "looking stupid" for not making a trade. Im pretty much resigned to the fact Gaff walks and we cop the compo. Gaff already has one foot out the door and clubs know we're not going to actually force a guy to stay on $1.2 million
Sucks but no point bluffing when everyone knows its a bluff. Maybe another trade will be facilitated in the Eagles favour to sweeten it a bit but thats about it
At the moment teams are offering these big contracts because they know it costs them nothing in the trade.
It’s just my opinion. That's kind of what free agency is though. The murkiness is in because the AFL decided to add compensation to it.
It is flawed, but the compensation is based on the team's need for compensation. i.e. clubs that are lower on the ladder have more need for it than those who finish higher. If the club losing the player doesn't like the compensation they're going to get, then they match the offer and negotiate a trade (such as with Dangerfield). It’s the whole Franklin scenario all over again.
This is why free agency is so flawed. You get compensation based on ladder position and not on player value.
The team taking the free agent should be made to forfeit picks to the AFL’s agreed value.
So if Gaff is valued at a pick 10 we should have to forfeit our first pick after 10 and other picks to make up the value. West Coast still get Pick 10 in the draft.

Free Agency is the slippery slope into turning the AFL into the Premier League where player movement is only restricted to the top echelon of clubs.
Since when have we seen a big name Free Agent go to a weak club?
Gaff to North would probably be the one that would buck the trend, but that’s why we have made the big $ offer.
If Richmond made the same $ offer, who do you think he chooses?
