People have gotta relax, Gay marriage got voted in by Australians, They’ll be alright regardless of a few little slurs being thrown around. Australia ain’t gonna suddenly turn Hitler on gays in 2024 or ever
Relax about what? Most agree Finlayson shouldn't have said it, cop whatever fine the AFL hands down and thats about it.

Then there are loons going on about freedom of speech, the n word or the ottoman empire for some reason.

Well done mate, I guess if we're not forcing them into concentration camps it's all tickety boo and we can move on, right?

Not a single AFL player has come out as gay during their career in the history of the league. Do you genuinely believe none of them are gay? Why do you think they don't feel comfortable coming out?
I don’t know man but they should come out, Who really cares? Someone came out in the A league and it wasn’t a big deal, Erin Phillips is openly gay, is everyone after her? No!

AFLW is entirely different because the culture of women's sport is different. Half the AFLW is gay.

Not one AFL player though, in the history of the game. Josh Cavallo at Adelaide United is a great example for soccer, but he's one of a handful of examples for a sport that is played professionally in every country in the world. Clearly gay players don't feel comfortable coming out, and we're clearly not moving in the right direction if our attitude is "they'll be alright regardless of a few slurs are thrown around". We have to hold people to a higher standard. People literally kill themselves over feeling like they won't be accepted.

You guys are right, If it’s in a work environment then slurs of any kind that are thrown out with malicious intent should be punished, If Finlayson had called an Italian player a ‘dumb wog’ or if he said the N word to someone then he should be punished for that too. All work places should be professional

Oh boy, time to start a new thread on Jeremy Finlayson or for the moderators to pull this thread back on track.

I am still not sure exactly what was said and who Finlayson said it to, I am not sure if that person is homosexual and if in fact the alleged victim took any offence at the remarks. As with most matters it is hard to pass judgement on a penalty unless you know the entire story. On the face of it a fine is about all that is warranted. Jeremy has apologized and both in person and publicly for the comment and he made the Port camp aware of the incident at three quarter time.

It is interesting but not surprising that Caroline Wilson can tell us all it 'was the worst possible homophobic slur'. She knows this despite the slur 'not being made available'.

Well that was educational. How about we just stop denigrating people - although working out what is denigrating could be a challenge. On Friday night I felt embarrassed when a person in the crowd referred to the umpire as a “bald maggot”. I don’t think it was a Port supporter as the decision was against the opposition. Just did not / does not feel right (any more).

100% he gets games with what Koch said. Koch made it worse with his dumb ass mouth, again.
I don't know what Koch said but we better ban him too just to be safe

Do you honestly reckon a young gay man would feel as comfortable in a football environment as a straight person?

I honestly believe that if an AFL footballer 'came out' today it would be celebrated without any negativity, the most uncomfortable matter for the player would be the media wanting to make him into a messiah rather than just being another player.

Times have changed very quickly and even at my local football club it really would not register anything but support coupled with a shrug of shoulders.

It is interesting how AFLW players are in openly gay relationships whereas AFL players are not.

Yeah I'm sure someone would feel safe to come out at your club with you throwing the word ****** around every 5 seconds.

This thread is obviously getting way off course, but if the ethnic background of LittleLika is Armenian then I'm going to cut him some slack.
What the Turks did to the Armenians was as bad as the holocaust, so bad in fact Turkey has expunged it from it's history books!

Back on course, I too have a feeling that Koch comparing Finlayson's regrettable homophobic insult of an Essendon opponent to Clarkson's tirade has muddied the waters somewhat, which could result in a heavier penalty than originally expected.

Jezza realised it was wrong immediately and self reported and now is getting thrown under the bus by the media, I know you're being ott saying the ****** word gets thrown around every 5 seconds because it's just not true.

And yet none have! Curious!

Just this year we've seen a homophobic sledge used twice in a couple months after nothing of the sort for a long time.
