Seems part of the North’s fans beef is that “he never wanted to come here”.

I think we underestimate how many players get drafted and plan to leave at the earliest opportunity.

If a club values a player it’s up to them to give them incentive to stay, whether that’s culture, leadership, money, lure of success, opportunity, it’s up to the club to make it happen.

We drafted Curtin, knowing he’s a potential to return to WA. We took that risk and now it’s up to us to make him want to stay, if he asks to leave this year, so be it.

Remember, he was contracted, North had every right to keep him if they chose to. They let him go because they got a good deal. It’s time North supporters move on.

And if this is really about “character”, perhaps tell your club to stop idolising Wayne Carey.
Lol, who at North idolises Wayne Carey?

Which other top picks left after one year, failing to complete their contract?

I'm not invested in JHF's career post-North, but the idea that his departure was quite normal and has been seen multiple times before is a load of bollox.
Tanner Bruhn to Geelong. Hes a damn good player too

You’re right, it is uncommon to do.

However, I’m confused why a North supporter would be upset by this.

North were well within their rights to force him to see out his contract. They chose not to. That was North’s decision.

Although it’s uncommon, by asking to leave after a year instead of doing so at the end of his contract, North are better off. They got more value in a trade then they would for an uncontracted player, and they’re able to get more time developing the player they will actually keep (Wardlaw) which is crucial in a rebuild.

Sure, that's from a practical point of view and I don't disagree with you.
But being a football supporter is an emotional attachment and most North supporters were excited about jhf becoming a gun in our team, not at Port power. And they felt like he shit on the club, with his petulance and refusal to be part of the team.
I think most North supporters would have preferred he was simply up front with us pre-draft, and then we would have possibly traded with the Crows before hand and saved a lot of heartache.

This thread should have been closed 200 pages ago. Just supporters of both sides embarrassing themselves at this point; posting about every damn possession or free kick, or grand finals and club culture from decades ago?

JHF has huge upside, if he can be consistent within games and week to week he will be one of the best going around. Certainly talented enough.

He didn’t cover himself in glory with North, but it worked out really well for everyone. Not sure why this is still being flogged to death.

You mean telling North that he really didn't want to go there, and they would say ok, and do a deal with another club?

Has that ever happened before?

I don't know about before, but certainly the consequential trade of JHF to Port relied on such dealings - GWS got involved to trade up to pick 1 so they could secure Cadman, believing he was the best available player who was not a flight risk.

Excuse my ignorance, but what did North end up getting in return for JHF?

Look that’s fair, and I’m not gonna pretend I didn’t have some level of anger at Tippet or Lever. But to still be obsessed with it two years later is weird.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it was a huge gamble for North to not take our offer knowing full well JHF was a flight risk. Again, blaming him and not the club is deflecting.

I also think it’s a tricky situation for a draftee to be in. I think it’s harsh to expect an 18 year old to handle it perfectly. Like I said, I reckon more draftees on draft night think they’re going to leave than what actually end up doing so.

It’s why I don’t see why as a North fan you’d still be stuck on it. Ultimately, you’ve ended up with Wardlaw and Goad, and I’d say you’d be fairly happy with that currently.

Personally, I posted in this thread a couple of times, it gets bumped every now and then and I respond if I think there's something worth responding to. I'm happy with Wardlaw, who knows how Goad works out.

But let's be honest, the JHF thing wouldn't continue so long if he wasn't a bit of a w***er. He's polarising even for Port supporters in games like the Gold Coast one where he gave away all the frees. It's a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand he's easy to dislike, but on the other it means you're kind of glad he's not in the team.

Being 18-20 is a bit of a copout. His whole cohort are the same age, and then there's a whole lot more similar ages. Most of them are not tossers.

One day I might even enjoy his good performances, at the moment I'm happy whenever he stinks it up.
