WADA has the right to appeal any ASADA/AFL sanction. Tampering of the sample regardless of reason will end his career. Either ASADA will sentence him the full penalty, or WADA will appeal and force the full penalty. Again, its surreal some opinions in this thread. like how some people truly believed Gaff would get anything less than eight weeks for breaking Brayshaw's jaw.

So if it is regardless of reason, why on earth did they target test Willie prior to advising him of the tampering infraction (but 2 weeks after the actual incident)?

Clearly they wanted to check whether there were any substances in his system that shouldn't be there and use that information as part of the tampering case. It is certain that if he was found to have steroids, EPO etc in his system he would have got the full 4 years for the tampering (based on the 'proof' that it was a cover-up of performance enhancing substance use) - ASADA can't now just ignore that secondary test (as evidence, not as a charge) because it didn't show up what they wanted to find.

2 years seems about right (possibly even harsh, but I'd guess the penalty will err on the harsher side rather than being too lenient). I'd love 18-months, but don't see that as likely. 12-months or less won't happen as time-served is more than that (and it just opens ASADA/AFL up to litigation down the track - seeing as they have the ability to set the penalty why would they do that)

Assume 4 - anything less is a bonus.

ASADA are total kents though, will most likely appeal anything less than 4 and his left nut.

Best case scenario he rolls into Melbs, they say ‘oh Willie ya bloody goose, lay off the cones mate!’ - he gets time served and a stern talking to. ASADA miss the whole thing because they thought the hearing was going to be Dec 2021, not Dec 2020.

I don't know why people think he will get a longer suspension than players found with peds in their samples, even if avoiding or tampering with a test is considered a positive ped test he still should get the same as the Pies players who tested positive, that being 2 years.

Hey guys any news on Willie yet?!

FFS, 13 months on and posters are still guessing a sentence ranging from he will play in the Cape York AFLX competition to be announced imminently through to- nothing less that missing the 2028 Olympic Games.
This drama cant come to a conclusion fast enough for a number of reasons, the death of this thread being number 2 in a close run race with Willie's well being.

Just to borrow what Julian Barnes said and see if it explains your "I don‘t know why..." :
"He had a better mind and a more rigorous temperament than me; he thought logically, and then acted on the conclusion of logical thought. Whereas most of us, I suspect, do the opposite: we make an instinctive decision, then build up an infrastructure of reasoning to justify it. And call the result common sense."

There is tampering and then there is tampering, right?

Taking PEDS and trying to replace urine with another urine and hiding it from asada is one thing.

Getting frustrated and pouring Powerade into the cup in front of official when you have taken only cannabis is another.

How can both be 4 years?

because they are both the same crime.... tampering!!

my personal opinion is 2 years suspension for willie.
Anymore then that and there is no way wce will keep him on the list
