This works if he nominates terms and no other club is prepared to meet those terms. Not sure that’s the case here.

That's why you game the contract to help ensure the result.

Say we're offering him $500k a year for 3 years. Richards ought not to care too much how he gets that $1.5M - it's not like there's a secret tax-efficient way to structure the deal. So we offer it as $800k in one year, and $350k in the other two. Probably front-load the contract. Richards stipulates that contract when he nominates for the draft. Then it doesn't matter if another team can match $1.5M over 3 years - if they can't cover the $800k he's due in one year then they can't draft him.

The rule used to be that if you nominated them for the draft, you must offer a them a main list position. Which means we'd need to clear a spot for him, but our interest in him and the benefit he offers surely comes from the ability to add an extra player to our max list size by using that CatB category.

The rule also used to be that you can nominate them for the Rookie Draft after the main draft and we automatically get that player and as he's NGA he's automatically CatB, same as F/S
Isn't the rule also that if you don't nominate them then you can't match a bid if one comes?

Keep in mind that if someone does cut our lunch at the PSD its very much a situation of...

(which is also why nobody will do it)

Would it be possible to draft him with Pick 58?

I don't think there's anything stopping him from nominating for the National Draft instead of or in addition to the Pre-Season Draft. It would just be a matter of us and his manager working out the best way to walk him into our list.

Well at least he's not Rory Atkins

I come in peace, I'm not here to cause trouble. (hate the crows if that helps? :p )

Richards has to be one of the hungriest youngsters we played this year and quite frankly I think towards the end of our season he was hard done by with consistent opportunity. I'm sad to see him go but I hope you guys can give him a good home as he takes his game further. He's quick, has a higher footy IQ given the amount of games he's played and he's confident in his ability.

25 is over the average age of an afl player on every club list except Geelong and Collingwood

He isn't a youngster

If he's so good, how come he's in his prime and couldn't even crack your best 22 when you missed finals?

Not really fussed with Richards, picked up in the 2022 draft at 48 as a mature age player. Nothing great in these stats, if had runs on the board and a clean bill of health, then yeah.

I appreciate Port fans are hurting and the trade wasn't what you would have hoped.

I honestly reckon you guys have grabbed a potenitally great player in Joe Richards. At times this year due to injury, we had to play a variety of players with little to no experience. Lachie Sullivan, Ed Allan, Harvey Harrison, Reef McInnes etc..

Of that crop, Joe Richards was a massive standout. His composure when he had the ball and ability to read the play, for a bloke who had no senior footy experience really stood out. Of the players with limited experience on our list, he was the one I personally didn't want to let go.

Clearly Port saw something in him when they offered him a 3 year deal months back, and the Pies did too as we matched the deal but he still nominated Port. He won best young player at the Pies BnF this year.

A snapshot of his first game here, I recommend watching it if you get time. Everytime he touched the ball was class:

He is a ****ing spud, to add to our list of small forward spuds.

No matter how it’s spun he’s an untried player which will have a limited ceiling due to his age. Most players hit their ceiling at 26.

He is worth nothing really
