Hope not, I'd rather take a gamble on a player that plays a position that we need.
I agree to a certain extent. Filling gaps should be a priority if the risk is not excessive and we have a hole up forward.

However if the club decides that the risk is too great with other positional prospects in the PSD then I don't think getting MacDonald instead is a bad thing. He still serves a purpose. He could sure up our mid-height defensive stocks. The only two defenders we have who are the same height are Grimes (who will be groomed for the midfield over time) and Bell (who has a lot to prove). The rest are either 190cm+ or nimble ball carriers 185cm or less like Bennel who could also be used in the midfield if required.

But this is the thing, the small-mid back flanker type has not been set in stone. Cheney looks shaky and his disposal is not great, Bartram looks unlikely, Bennell has not shown much accountability (though give him time). While yes the younger players should get first crack at this position, he would fill an immediate need.

Macdonald a Demon on strategy

MELBOURNE is certain to take former Brisbane defender Joel Macdonald with the first pick in the pre-season draft, after the former Lion yesterday decided to opt out of next Thursday's national draft.

Adam McPhee, who has quit Essendon after receiving a three-year contract offer from Fremantle, should confront no impediments getting to the Dockers at pick three in the pre-season draft, with Melbourne seemingly committed to Macdonald, while Richmond, with the second selection, is understood to want a younger player.

The highest-profile player in next week's draft, Luke Ball, remains keen to get to Collingwood at pick 30, while Essendon, with picks 24 and 26, retains an interest in him.

Complicating matters is that Ball, who has nominated terms of a two-year, $1 million contract in the draft, has refused to meet Essendon, as he had previously refused to meet Melbourne. In commenting on McPhee's departure from the Bombers on Tuesday, football manager Paul Hamilton said: ''We only want players here that want to play for this club.''

This stance might force the Bombers' hand to pass on Ball if the former St Kilda captain continues to refuse to speak with them.

The Saints are understood to have some interest in former Richmond player Adam Pattison, while Hawthorn has asked Pattison's former Tiger teammate, Dean Putt, to train with the Hawks as they search for reinforcements to their ruck stocks.

Delisted Carlton forward Cameron Cloke, who remains under contract to the Blues, and former Swans premiership player Luke Ablett were among those who nominated for next week's draft.

Brisbane is understood to have some interest in Sam Power joining his brother Luke, while former Bulldog Wayde Skipper has been invited to train at Hawthorn.

i wouldnt have thought it was a certainty but thought id share the article.

Not surprised - he seems the best option particularly given Thorp is going into the national draft.

Im still a bit confused as to why he was delisted. Brisbane picked up some average mature age players imo, so if they were prepared to let MacDonald go what were the problems??

Getting McDonald in the PSD and Thorp in the ND makes a lot of sense to me, yeah....

I think we will now use the first 4 picks to get what we are short on i.e. pick 11 best forward, 18 best ruckman? 34 - Thorpe (or best player) 50 - Thorpe (if picked up at 34 we would prob pass and use two picks in pre season.

Yes picking up X.Clarke and Staker and letting go Joely Mac makes you wonder.

Im pretty sure he was wanting to return to Victoria and North Melbourne were very keen on him but figured they wouldnt try in trade week because they could get him for free in the PSD.

Also this could have been a decision made by the lions due to salary cap constraints, with Fevola arriving maybe someone on a decent wage had to be let go.

Jesse Smith has gone under the radar a little. North rated him as a future superstar, and didnt want to let him go. Despite his injury concerns this year he may be worth more than Ball or McDonald and a couple of years younger

Good point about Smith by OC37 there... but it all comes down to whether he's going to be able to get his body right or not, of course.

And yeah, you're right Bater, he certainly should be training with us as soon as possible if he's going to be under consideration, especially given his injuries... we'd need to have a far closer look at him to make the right judgement.

Id hope we could get Thorp at pick 34

But im sure other clubs would be interested

Do you think he will be availible at 34?
