Of course selwood has had a better output this year, but you've got to put things into perspective in order to make a fairer comparison.

Kerr in 2006, which is more recent than 40 years ago (the 60's), plays a very similar role (hard ball get midfielder in a top level team that is the 3rd midfielder) to Selwood this year.

Put Kerr in Geelong's team this year and he would have a higher output than Selwood imo.

No it isn't. Selwood is far more tagged than Daniel Kerr was in 2006. I was at the both Geelong games in Perth, Selwood was tagged heavily in both far more than Bartel and Corey was.

And do people recognise that Selwood is significantly younger than Hayes. And back to the Kerr comparison, Kerr is older than Judd. Both have same level of experience.

There ia far gap of experience between the likes of Ablett, Bartel and Selwood.

4. What does a kerr and judd comparison of age have to do with selwood...

I am not measuring what Selwood could be, I am measuring what he is - a gun young midfielder that is not a top 5 midfielder as of this moment, but very well could be in the near future.

The last two times Ablett did not play he got 34 and 31 possessions.

The reality is that his standing in the game has been helped by Ablett, Bartel & co being the midfield focus of Geelong.

Selwood gets just as much attention as Bartel and quite often gets more attention than Ablett. You do realise that many teams just let Ablett run free because they think he is too good to be tagged and feel they should try and stop Geelongs other prime movers?

If anything he is underrated. Put him in a team such as the Pies and he would be the best midfielder by a fair margin.

You keep embarassing yourself. Bartel and Corey have spent a lot of time on the HB line this year. Selwood is the number 2 midfielder this season. He has only been helped out by Ablett and even when Ablett missed earlier in the season he dominated. The Panther is a vastly overrated poster.

I agree with this. When rating Selwood they are taking his age/potential. Still top 10 IMHO. Although to say he is better then Hayes is clearly wrong.

He is still one of the best midfielders in the league (top 15-20 right now), and if he continues to progress as he has, I would expect him to be strongly inside my personal top 5 in the near future.

Of course this is only my opinion, but I still think my points are fair and I give him due credit.

Kerr has never been cope with a tag. He has been in system for what 9 years. Selwood in his third year, is now handling a tag/ heavy treatment far better than Kerr has ever done. And you don't think experience has made Lenny Hayes a better player.

The question is whether Selwood's standing in the game is a fair indication to his output on the field.
Given some of the calls in this thread alone it is fair to say that Selwood is indeed a tad overrated.

Kerr is a prime example of a player who can elevate themselves to the top based on the players around him. Was never a marked man at WC due to the fact that other teams were more worried about Judd and Cousins. Throw Embley as another case in point. Looked like a gun when the WC Fab 4 was in full swing and has not gone near it since the dismantling of the WC midfield.

I'd like to see how Selwood handles more games without ablett and bartel (ie Cousins and Judd - numbers 1 and 2) in the team. Unlikely though given the ages of ab' and bart'. That is where my comparison with Kerr comes in.

Also, yes, experience has made Hayes a better player than Selwood. You just mentioned above that Hayes is better than Selwood. I could understand where you are coming from if you said Selwood will be better than Hayes, but I can't really understand Selwood already being better than Hayes.

I don't know what Kerr has to do with Selwood. Just becuase Kerr has not kicked on after everyone left does not mean that every player in the competition is bad due to the quality of the players around them.
