Joel Selwood

I'd like to see how Selwood handles more games without ablett and bartel (ie Cousins and Judd) in the team. Unlike though given the ages of ab' and bart'. That is where my comparison with Kerr comes in.
Round 7 v Sydney. Ablett injured, Bartel in the backline and played a quiet game. Joel Selwood, 34 disposals, 4 tackles, 4 clearances and arguably BOG with Johnson.

Overrated does not = Hack.

The question is whether Selwood's standing in the game is a fair indication to his output on the field.
Given some of the calls in this thread alone it is fair to say that Selwood is indeed a tad overrated.

Kerr is a prime example of a player who can elevate themselves to the top based on the players around him. Was never a marked man at WC due to the fact that other teams were more worried about Judd and Cousins. Throw Embley as another case in point. Looked like a gun when the WC Fab 4 was in full swing and has not gone near it since the dismantling of the WC midfield.

Embley was never part of the WC Fab 4, it was that superstar Chad Fletcher. How people forget :D. He won an AA.

Kerr or Embley was never the kid in the group. The WCE midfield bar Cousins all had same level of experience. Selwood went past Prismall, Tenace to be in starting midfield.

Would you take him over Black because Selwood have far more years of football ahead of him?

I think that's a large factor as to why Selwood is rated as top 4 midfielder in the country. People are including his age and potential into the equation, as opposed to purely what he is until this moment.

I'm just stumped as to how people can rate Selwood ahead of Hayes, Cooney and Black without factoring age/potential into the equation. Take Leo J's last post - he is factoring in what Selwood WILL be.

You listed 8 players that are no way near Selwood, regardless of age.

All this shows is that you were grasping at straws trying to come up with a list for your argument.

The guy cops a hard tag basically every week yet still dominates games of football. Have a look at how he performed earlier in the year when Ablett was out. I can't believe i am even posting in this thread tbh, it is not worth the 5 minutes out of my life.

Black smashed him tonight, but Black smashes a lot of quality opponents ;)

Selwood is a young gun, not yet in the best 10 mids in the game but he soon will be

Wish we'd taken him instead of Leuey (only to see him playing in the same midfield as the mighty Rich )

Superb.

I'm not doubting that he cops a hard tag, but what he doesn't cop is the #1 tagger, and for the large majority of time he doesn't cop the #2 tagger either.

I'm sure that as he continues to elevate and hits his peak from say 23 onwards, he will start to cop a #1 tag and he will be able to handle it well.

He just hasn't had the chance to prove himself at that yet.

Also, yes, experience has made Hayes a better player than Selwood. You just mentioned above that Hayes is better than Selwood. I could understand where you are coming from if you said Selwood will be better than Hayes, but I can't really understand Selwood already being better than Hayes.

No, I meant that Hayes is in his prime right now, nothing to do with Selwood. A dead set gun. What I was trying to say is that experience plays a large part. The likes of Bartel and Hayes have developed in superstars.

And can we be clear about Kerr, injuries and the 'brain fades' have had signficant impact on him aswell. Until, Selwood starts hitting, head butting players because he doesn't like it. He is nothing like Kerr.
And unlike Selwood, Kerr has no defensive side of his game, he does not make his tagger accountable. Kerr's problems does not centre on just that he does not have great players around him anymore.

People should go to a Geelong game and watch Selwood; just sit there and watch him. He gets so much attention from the opposition that its ******ed;at every moment someone is at him, whether shoving him around or jabbing him in the side or general scraggling. He so much looks at the ball and players will swarm at him. Coaches put a player on Ablett who can hurt him going the other way; its Selwood who gets heavily tagged.

Yes he had a quiet game. Holy crap, the supposed superstars of the competition have never had a quiet game. They have never been tagged out.

People are ******ed if they dont think he is a great player. He probably isnt the greatest player, but he is definetly in the top ten.

Yes he has. He has copped the #1 or #2 tag plenty of times and dominated.

He hasn't been playing as consistently as he was last year. If he continued playing and improving like he did last year then i would have counted him as a real chance at the brownlow but he hasn't played that well this season really. In some games he plays very well but not well enough to be the best on ground and in others you barely notice he is there. I have been a Selwood fan since '07 and at this current time it is obvious that he is not quite at his best on a weekly basis. Although 100% respect to him for playing today when i am quite sure they would have been more than happy to leave him out to rest like other key players if he had of asked.

It is interesting though... steps up to the key role and falls over. Perhaps just a fluke, perhaps an vastly overrated player.

What an idiotic troll.
He has been the #2 mid all year. He played the same role again tonight alongside Corey.

And anyone who reckon this kid does not get tagged or treatment is deluded.
Most teams target him directly (Not that it bothers him!)

He didnt play that badly, 20 possies i think. I think everyone noticed that he wasnt up to his best because we all expected him to tear it up because of all the big outs.

Give him a break!!!

I know it's a touchy subject how cats don't perform in the big games. Try to see his game without the blinkers on. He just wasn't up to his usual standard when it was his turn to be number one.

You'd have to say that the way he handles attention represents his mental strength at this age and bodes well for future leadership.

Was last week a big game? - how did he go then?

As pointed out by many in this thread, Selwood has dominated in the past in Ablett's absence.
You are either too ignorant or stupid to realise this.

Sel's a star. Rich tho could be better seeing him tonight. But knocking Selwood after tonight is gutless he was smashed early but worked back into it well. You only have to look back one week to see how good he is against St.Kilda. I also thought he was one of our best in the Grannie last year.

I know his brother Scott, seriously humble guys :thumbsu:

Scooter couldn't be a better bloke, everyone who knows him is richer for the experience.

Just such a genuine guy who is devastated about his injuries.
