Coach John Longmire - Part IV has resigned

It's good it's fresh what we need someone straight out of the game , look at the experience with the rest of the panel .
I don't know what you people want
I just said what I want. We lost a senior coach and an assistant, with only an inexperienced development coach coming in.

For a team that looks bereft of ideas come grand final day, and is slow to react to teams figuring us out, I'd have thought we should at least get some experience in and not have a net loss of coaches.

Be able to discuss the team freely?

remember when Hardwick, Clarko, Blight, Barrasi, Eade, Voss etc all said they would never coach again .
I still feel those circumstances are different. Horse is setting himself up for the next part of his career with AFL admin, his target is completely different to that of the others. Could be wrong, and if I am I'll buy you a beer King!

Did no one read the parts where he stated he wants to go into admin and take a different course in footy?

He hasn't stated he wants to step away entirely; he just wants to go into a different part of footy management. Like, not coaching.
I completely agree.
I thought he was very honest and was quite clear that he wanted another role in footy that wasn’t coaching. You could see he had genuine interest and was genuinely excited by it.

Well that’s what I thought anyway.

Who knows what the future holds but I doubt he will be coaching in the next few years at the very least. Unlike others, he went out of his own terms and by choice, leaving a great list for the next coach. I’m not convinced he will return to coaching based on what I saw but we will see.

I’d love to see him stay at the club in other roles.

McVeigh (Mark) probably has the seniority, based on experience at GWS.

Personally I think we're still 1 assistant short with Jarrad McV going to the VFL, so I'd be looking externally for the senior assistant role.
We should go after Hinkley if he gets the sack. Like Dew with the Lions.

Reflecting more on the press conference, I thought it was telling that horse started questioning if he could go on when the team was flying.

It makes me think his motivation comes from building and seeking to become the best. However, with his humility, I think he never relished being the best, and never hated losing enough to need to be the best.

I think this is part of the reason he struggled with GFs, especially when Swans were the favourites. The Clarkson’s of the world needed it more.

On the way hand, it makes Horse a good person with a good life. I would much prefer to be Horse than Clarkson or Hardwick, despite their greater GF successes. On the other hand, it means that Horse struggled to be a standout champion.

In that way he reminds me on Mark Webber, who was supremely talented and the nicest guy on the grid, but lacked the c**t in him to be F1 champion.

Who knows none of us know the bloke, he seems to love the game and the bonds with players. If he got a chance to develop and lead a team again it wouldn't shock me if he took it.

I think both options are in play is all, yours may be more likely but still .

People think he is coming down here like Sheedy did GWS.

Agree with all that , but he was also careful not to say never again I noticed.

This Swans role will be interesting, is it a year just to sort the contracts out and do a "job" and he won't be with us at all in 2026?

My prediction, completely worthless like everyone else’s on here but he we go. Oddly specific and detailed one might say. The details will likely change, but it all feels unerringly inevitable…

Horse starts the performance role and loves it. Business owners and managers flood in to get a taste of the horse magic and hope it rubs off on them and their teams. Everyone finds way to help him achieve what he wants to achieve. He is good, though not great at the role, and he he is learning oh so much everyday. He will get there!

But then he starts observing that people begin listening to him less and less, as they realise he has no hard power and they ultimately need to serve their direct manager. Horse realises that he liked the coaching role with command and control power, and finds it exhausting constantly trying to influence others to get things done. And while the CEO and Board were supportive in principle, when push comes to shove they always need to serve another priority. He also starts to come to the realisation that the magic from corporate sessions and leadership talks never does manage to rub off - and that deep down both he and his customers feel it. It feels a bit empty.

On the family side, it starts off great and his kids and wife are excited to spend more time with him. He can also support his daughter through HSC and enter uni. But his kids also have lives of their own, so the regularity and enthusiasm starts to wain. His wife also starts to get annoyed when he brings his fastidiousnous to the home - with no coaching outlet for his OCD. She starts complaining that she is not an assistant coach and won’t drop things at a moment’s notice just to please him. She values her (well earned) independence and isn’t willing to give it up.

Horse also starts to miss the players. They say hi in the shared meal area and have a chat, but they no longer yearn for his approval and fewer seek his mentorship. The playing list also rolls over and feels more and more foreign. And he doesn’t agree with everything Cox does; he bites his tongue and remains professional, but it is oh so hard to let it go.

This whole time Tasmania is non-stop pestering him and his manager with incredible offers. They eventually get onto his wife, and offer an amazing holiday in Tassie, just to check it out. They go down with the intent to take the freebie and return to Sydney, but they start to get carried away with the vibe. Tassie leaks to press on hat he is down and a journalist asks him at the airport if he still has the burn to be a head coach. He bats the question away like a true professional, but t he question still hits him and he knows the answer. So does his wife. They realise it is time to pack their boxes again and start another adventure.

I think Longmire will be coaching Adelaide in 2026.

They might improve, but probably not enough to ignore Longmire being available.

Fremantle would be a chance as well, but I think their list is so stacked it is almost impossible that they don't finish top 6 next season. Obviously they would be all over him if they don't have a good year.

I don't think Longmire is going to want to sit out of senior coaching for 4 years and wait for Tasmania.

What is for sure is he won't be short of offers if he does indicate he is interested in coaching again.

I think it's possible he might replace Cameron as Head of Football at the end of 2025 and Cameron return to Vic. Or go somewhere else as head of football or CEO, though I'm not sure if he has the background to be CEO. Actually I think Head Coach is the best paid role so that might be a factor. He'll spend this year regenerating and maybe listening to offers and suggestions. At 54 he's too young to retire.

Is he , what if he really does want to do other things

I mean retire altogether. He seems too active.
I mention some things other than coaching he might want to do and for sure he might want to do something completely out of left field. Or he might decide to coach again. Doubt he knows himself yet.
Fully retired myself at 56 but I had serious health issues.

I think the Longmire & Parker situation was really interesting. Because I believe Horse is the greatest guy until you are no longer considered useful. Then he becomes COLD. Luke Parker always wanted to be a Swans player for life. But after the way he was treated last year he decided to go into the Meat market. Nobody at the Swans even tried to talk him out of it. The coach did not care. In fact there was already a very bid chasm between Luke & his mentor. Longmire refusing to even acknowledge him at training. He stopped talking to Luke. That is why he decided to get a Retirement Plan at North.

This is the info I have from a journo I know. Apparently, Aliir was in a similar position a few years ago. For some reason John did not see him as apart of our future. He was ignored according to my info. That was the only reason he had for leaving. He loved the Swans. We were his team until he was show they weren't

If true that is not a great reflection on Horse. I think the same probably happened with Mitchell too.

Just on Longmire's resignation I do wonder how much his understanding of philosophy influenced his decision.

As most would be aware he has mentioned that in his downtime he liked to read/study philosophy.

David Hume and his view that "All the perceptions of the human mind resolve themselves into two distinct kinds, which I shall call impressions and ideas." was arguably the bedrock of Horse's coaching.

In the end I wonder if (in the words I believe of Jean-Paul Sartre) he realised;
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away

That's it, that's it, all that bull and we end up with the weakest punchline in history?
