A tragedy. RIP the deceased and condolences to his family.

All those you have read through this thread can take comfort that 95%+ of the posters on BigFooty are good people.

...and a minority of them are truly shit. I'd like to remind everyone to remember the names of the arseholes in this thread. Needless to say such cowards will be starting new Alias's shortly.

Can the Mods please target the IP addresses for the scum and hand out permanent bans?

Rest in peace mate, deepest and sincerest condolences to family & loved ones. Life is truly frightening sometimes and I can't even begin to imagine the hell those closest to him must be going through right now. A tragedy hopefully never to be repeated.

A truly sad day for AFL football, but an even sadder one for those who have lost a son, a brother or a partner as rightly pointed out by a poster before me.

Very sadening day feel terrible for his family/friends.

Will the AFL possibly pay its respects to the player/family by allowing for a minute silence this week? I'm already presuming all of the players playing finals will wear black arm bands from the tragic news.

I would hope this would happen.

And any loudmouth dickhead supporter who yells out during the minute gets turfed out on their rear and membership revoked.

Tragic when someone with a promising life in front of them is taken away so soon. Thoughts are with family, friends & PAFC :(

BTW can't stand it when the word "tragedy" is used when a player/athlete gets injured. Death is a tragedy :mad:

Reading it off the afl website, I am both in disbelief and in shock. My condolences go out to the family and friends of the player.

I would love to see an off-season John McCarthy memorial match between Port and Collingwood. All the gate takings go to his family and we get a great atmosphere of people from all clubs and make it more of a fun day rather than a serious one, remembering his short life and how he impacted both clubs.

I think this would be a great show of respect and have no doubt the clubs would partake in that this weekend coming.

RIP

A horrible thing that shouldn't happen and is difficult to reconcile.

My thoughts go out to his family, former teammates, and supporters of the PAFC.

What an absolutely horrible way to top off the footy year, can't imagine how his family, friends and team mates are feeling right now.

My condolences go out to all those close to him.

Hopefully the AFL honor his life sometime during the finals.. But lets think about that later.

Terrible, terrible news. If it was Jmac, was becoming such a good player.

Reminds me of 2004 when Broadbridge died. So sudden.

RIP

I need to get off this site, but i can't.

Its bringing me down.

This is just horrible news.

Condolences to those closest to him. Would be very fitting to share a minutes silence before all games this weekend. From the AFL community as a whole. A young life and promising football talent wasted. Taken way to early. RIP John McCarthy

This kind of tragic situation puts everything into perspective. I know we always say that, but it really does.

There are people on here who literally act as if the fact their team lost is the end of their known universe. At the end of the day, we just barracking for 22 professional athletes who are running around trying to kick pig skin through big sticks and do it more often the the other team.

I love footy like everyone else on here, but even if the Pies were to lose this week, I'd know it was not even 1 millionth of the tragedy that has occured in Las Vegas. At the end of the year, we all say "oh well there's always next year" and start it all over again. There is no next year for John. Such a tragic loss and I really hope all clubs can pay tribute to him this weekend and for the rest of the finals series.

While they will be unlikely to accept given it is so soon, I would not object to the McCarthy family tossing the coin at the AFL Grand Final. I know they usually have competitions, but this goes above and beyond competitions.

Once again, RIP John, forever missed; never forgotten.
