EDDIE McGuire says he will take a journalist to court for suggesting he leaked rumours about Lance Franklin.
McGuire this morning delivered a scathing counter-attack after Tony Sheahan told ABC Grandstand that McGuire was responsible for spreading "untrue" rumours about the Hawthorn star.

Sheahan said the Collingwood president leaked a story about Franklin being drunk at the Grand Prix because he was "so fed up with having to deal with (stories about) his own players" including Magpie players self-reporting the use of illicit drugs and Travis Cloke being fined for parking in Collingwood CEO Gary Pert's parking space.

"Buddy's profile has taken a real hit of late, and I understand there may be an opposing president behind some of this, one Ed McGuire," Sheahan said.

"We know Mr McGuire is an expert at manipulating the media and it's just unfortunate that Buddy Franklin was the recipient of this."

But on his own breakfast show on Triple M, McGuire said every aspect of the story was wrong and proof that Sheahan was a "failed journalist".

McGuire said he wasn't responsible for the Grand Prix story becoming public even though he witnessed Franklin's actions first-hand - along with most of the AFL's heavy hitters.

"I think the source of that story there, Tony Sheahan, is just an unmitigated idiot and I will be taking legal action," McGuire said.

"That's just rubbish because Buddy was a bit under the weather that day and he admits it and so does the club."

Hawthorn CEO Stuart Fox told Fairfax Media in March: "We are aware of the issue. We have met with him. There was no sanction. We've told him to be more aware of his behaviour."

McGuire said he didn't like going after fellow journalists but he had to defend his integrity.

"It's an unmitigated lie, he has made that up.

"I didn't report that story, it's none of my business. I've never leaked that story, I don't need to leak stories, I've got my own radio show. I'm in front of a microphone 24 hours a day.

"To intimate that the president of the Collingwood Football Club spends his time trying to work out how to deflect attention from his own club by putting it on to Buddy Franklin ... you could not attack my integrity in a greater fashion.

"That is someone way out of his depth ... he's been a failed reporter and he's shown today why.

"I don't like going after people like that but I have to defend myself, my club and my integrity and I'll do that with everything I can, so Tony Sheahan, good luck pal."
