Surely pick 8 for Battle is the nadir that causes the AFL to scrap FA compo.

Your compensation should be the salary cap you open up to attract other players

The opposite case is that free agency becomes top clubs raiding bottom clubs non stop, creating (in addition to the fixture) a system of haves and have nots rather than an equalised competition.

Not hard to envisage in the era of Gen Z and instant gratification.

Josh Battle will be better than the pick 8 equivalent player for at least the next 5 years, by which time the pick 8 player will be approaching free agency - and so on and so on.

This is one I think the AFL have got right.

Then don't be a bottom club. Everyone has the same salary cap - would be a good job to convince players to stay for unders in perpetuity

Or perhaps this is simply the broken clock scenario.

FA compo is ridiculous in its entirety.

Why should 16 other clubs be punished?
You could say exactly the same thing about academies and father sons though and that will not be changed any time soon.

It's hardly a perfect system but like academies and father sons, every club gets punished sometimes and sometimes your club has a win.

Fair enough some people don't like the compensation system, but of all players to spit the dummy over, Josh Battle? He's a ripper. Would have commanded a pick around 10 in a trade, what's so shocking about the Saints getting pick 8? Incredibly durable, can play at both ends, great hands and skills etc.
Because most commentators debating what his worth likely have never watched him play, or at best only when their team has played the Saints.

Maybe the band 1 whiners can see they were wrong now
Compensation banding is based on the contract, not how good the player is.

The only ones whining about it were Saints people wanting the AFL to give them band 1 regardless of where it actually landed.

Silly take. Considering the issue at the time was that fans of 17 other clubs were crying that Battle isn’t worth a band 1 contract.

Evidently is as good as advertised by us Saints fans.

Nah it was justified

We didn't do enough to keep him but the way he handled himself in the lead up to it made it impossible for him to come.

I am however super happy to see him playing well
Lol you mean by leaving the club?

Might be interesting to know that Barrass also gave mixed signals about staying or going, fell out a bit with the club administration and yet was still invited to speak and get a proper farewell at the best and fairest as a servant of the club.

"So a mate of mine's ex has a brother who used to work in the St Kilda marketing department, and apparently..."
I think it's common knowledge he told the Saints at his exit interview he was staying and then reneged.

I'm not convinced it's on par with killing the Lindbergh baby but it is a dick move.
