Confirmed Josh Battle [to Hawthorn as UFA]

There isn’t a metric that everyone will unanimously agree with to measure the value of players.

Ultimately if a club like Hawthorn want to spend the best part of $1m on Battle - good not great player. He isn’t a match winner.

So be it.

It will eventually start biting clubs in the ass and start slowing down in a few years when the caps start tightening up for each club
Salary Cap is getting bigger. I don't think you get it mate.
There will be more 'Battle like' free agency contracts year after year

Why are Freo fans getting mad? It's not like any of their trades will be affected.
Depends....

Eagles fans have complained last 2 years having their 2nd rounder pushed back to pick 25 or even 30.

Before this Josh battle compo pick, dockers 3 picks in the 1st round was pick 9 , pick 10 (from magpies) and pick 16 (from Port).

So those picks are pushed back by 1. And make them worth slightly less points wise

Remember when saints got Brad Crouch from the crows as a free agent?

Crows demanded a top 5 pick as compo. We know how that was dragged out and ended up

Crouch was a RFA and Adelaide chose to not match. Our offer wasn't enough for band 1. If they'd attempted to match at the time it might have forced us to offer more and trigger band 1. But they didn't so they got what they got. Different scenario to Battle.

I agree. Depends on the situation.

Crows would of taken a risk had the crows matched the saints offer. Would of meant the saints would have to do a trade.

No way would the saints found a way to offer a pick 10 or 15 or a Future 1st.

I could understand the crows situation with Patrick Dangerfield. Cats were bloody lucky as it was 2015. Had Dangerfield been a free agent 1 year later, crows would demand a couple of 1st round picks.

Well... Your team could of followed North Melbourne path of 2020- 2024

The increases of the cap, stops at the end of 2027 from memory. This is a unique period in the game as the cap will increase by 16.5% until the end of 2027

It isn’t an infinite increase. So eventually your cap average per player will hit a new level and everyone will operate within the new cap maximum of 18.5m

Your Band 1 trigger will be ever higher next season than the reported 900k it is today.

So yes I get it better than you apparently do. You will continue to see big deals for good not great players. You won’t continue to see band 1 for them. People will feel better seeing Brayshaw or LDU triggering band 1 next offseason - even Balta.

Crazy to think Hawks are paying Battle 900K+ a year 🤪
Didn’t your club openly offer him more? I have posted how I wanted to get you band 1 as you need it and we clearly wanted Battle so everyone wins. I get you currently don’t have much to celebrate but why not enjoy the pick rather than suggest we are stupid when your own club made a commensurate offer.

Great everyone is happy (Hawks & Saints)... except those super salty tears that aren't

Great get for the Hawks, very good player that means they can free up some other players (Weddle, Sicily come to mind).

Poor form from the Saints with the B&F thing but that's par for the course with them. Saints and the Crows are the worst run clubs in this league.
We have seen all week how awkward it is with players leaving and attending or not turning up.

Cal Wilkie literally said it would have been uncomfortable for Josh had he been there and he is mates with the guy.

Suggest, it’s nowhere near as poor as you and others make out.

I think it's the one blight on this whole week. Wouldn't have killed us to invite him, but agreed, parading him up on the dias for a third place finish for this year when he has already committed to Hawthorn would have been conflicting.

It would have been awkward as and he would have been copping it all night from supporters. It's nowhere near as bad as people are making out but people will see what they want to see.

It's sounds crazy because they aren't. Saints offered more than 900k and got knocked back by Battle. By all reports it's around 850k.

850k is probably overs for Battle now (I'd be more comfortable paying 700k) but it wont be a few years down the track as caps increase. Battle probably commands pick 15-25 in a trade so essentially we're buying a late 1st/early 2nd rounder for 150-200k a year.

It's a great deal and Saints get a little bit overs in terms of compo but that's how it is.

Everyone is happy.
