Chelsea Manning was never pardoned. Her sentence was commuted, which is different. Obama rightly did not give her a pardon because it would have sent the wrong message. No government of any country can afford to be shown as tolerating the release of secret or classified government info.

Especially when it shows them nakedly & brazenly murdering innocent journo's & civilians from other countries eh….Hence the need to classify their criminality as 'secretive' from public disclosure.

The people have a right to know what their governments are up to, under any true Democracy, where freedom of information in the public interest & transparency are paramount.....These pricks need to be held to account for their actions, like any other citizen does.

You'd do well to remember that, instead of defending the attempted reversal of all the foundational tenets of what a Democracy comprises.....Orwellian Double-Speak & Hegelian dialectical inversions don't work on all of us.

" The people have a right to know what their governments are up to"

Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister said they have the right to be ignorant as knowledge equals complicity. and from the same show, you can either have open or you can have government.

The US government immediately said it would appeal the decision in the High Court. Assange will remain in custody until a bail hearing set for Wednesday evening (AEDT).

All the freeze peach/journalist posturing ignores that A) Assange is a grub and B) we've known since Yes, Minister that dirty, amoral things are done by governments if they feel it is in their country's interests.
