This one clearly isn't a huge deal, but teams that don't have white as a colour in their regular home strip should have shorts in the secondary colour as the first choice for an away game (especially in a game against a home team who has a significant amount of white), then white shorts as the third option if that doesn't help.

If teams like Richmond (yellow), Hawthorn (gold), Adelaide (yellow or red), Essendon (red), Melbourne (red), West Coast (yellow) and Gold Coast (yellow) wore shorts in those colours for away games as necessary, not only would their strips probably look better, but it might do enough to prevent the need for the clash guernsey in certain situations.

Teams who wear tricolours, including white should also have shorts available in all three colours (e.g. Bulldogs/red, Port/teal, St Kilda/red, GWS/ orange) to provide the most options and flexibility to combat potential clashes.
As an example -

There's an interesting philosophical conundrum as to whether Essendon's red shorts or Richmond's yellow looked worse. Being a Tigers fan, I don't ever want to see them again.

They were brought in around the time colour TV made its debut (mid-late 70s), and they were just one of several inspired attempts to jazz up the game with a bit of extra colour and dash. None were particularly memorable (in a positive fashion, at least).

Can't say I saw Richmond's yellow dacks. People obviously still talk about Essendon's red shorts experiment in the 1980s with mixed opinions. I even recall seeing a photo of an early Eagles match where the yellow guernsey was matched with yellow shorts.

They didn't look great in my opinion, but really, what did with those dull woollen/polyster things players used to get around in? When Essendon brought the red shorts back with the fat sash guernsey, the shorts (at least) actually looked pretty good.

We should wear them with our red guernsey imo. Would look better than the white.

Yep, if people weren't already conditioned to white shorts and you suddenly introduced them paired with coloured jumpers, everyone would think they look stupid.

coloured shorts

- even yellow - look fine in like the nba - ie lakers

That's a bad example - wearing yellow shorts against a team with yellow jumper wasn't great. White shorts actually would have been better in that instance.

Or with coloured shorts, that match up would have been better with West Coast in Royal shorts, Hawks in yellow (or white) shorts.

Was just showing what WC looks like with yellow shorts.

Who's fault is it for the Carlton-Collingwood clash? AFL's stupidity or Carlton's stubbornness?
AFL, and Eddie actually wants Carlton to wear their navy jumper. Collingwood should be wearing their white jumper as he said that's what they'll be doing.

Looks like this one is our (Carlton) home game which makes it much easier as Collingwood can just wear their "white strip".
It wouldn't be a problem if Collingwood wore this for their home game against us as well but "white shorts equals away" stupidity gets in the way of that. That being said when its their home game its up to them what they wear so we should be in white if they want to wear their "black strip".

Grey is a bad colour for a uniform. It blends in with the crowd.

Man Utd changed out of their grey shirts at half time and never wore it again.

Then Liverpool came to Old Trafford a few years later in an all grey kit and smacked them 4-1 ironically

Good times
