Jumper clash fails

Does the AFL get any say in what the clubs are wearing before a match?

For example, just two years ago Geelong and North Melbourne played in Indigenous jumpers that created the worst clash I have ever seen. How was this not picked up beforehand?

As a hypothetical, if Hawthorn and Brisbane were drawn to play each other in heritage round and planned to wear 80s style jumpers - Hawthorn the gold and brown striped jumper and the Brisbane Lions wearing a gold and maroon Brisbane Bears jumper with the triangular BB emblem from this era - wouldn't the AFL review this beforehand and order the Lions to wear the inverse Bears jumper at the very least?
It wouldn't suprise me if it's the other way around and it's the AFL picking the jumpers.

Yes and no. The AFL approve clash jumpers, and they designate if a matchup is a clash.

The home team chooses to wear whatever they like, and if it's designated a clash, then the away team pick an alternative jumper.

However, the AFL doesn't have any say over the designs of special jumpers (Indegenous/Anzac/Heritage ect) and they don't manipulate the fixture to avoid clashes,
so if the home team creates a jumper and the away team Doesn't have a suitable clash jumper approved then we're shit out of luck.

Sydney/North Melbourne is usually fine, but Sydney made it worse by wearing their Indegenous kit with the solid white back rather than their regular kit with the Red back.

Look, I agree but I also don’t blame them, the afl has paid lip service to their clash policy both in terms of selection of suitable clash kits and implementation of the policy.

North have used the “clash” jumper as a chance to bring back a popular (and likely well wold) design from their heyday. The afl approved it and then continues to approve its use when it doesn’t fix the clash (or argurably creates a worse one).

In particular the Afls attitude toward the big 4 and traditional rivals not needing to wear the clashes has likely led most clubs to just think “**** it, doesn’t matter anyway, may as well use this shitty policy to our benefit”.

I think them using this jumper as their current away is fine, and I really like it as a jumper.

I was referring to that Geelong/North clash the other year when the Roos decided to make their jumper even more white for no good reason.

Every club should have to create a clash jumper/s so that their is a suitable option for every match up. This should be ticked off by the AFL prior to the season.

Yesterday isn’t Sydney’s fault. They’re the home team, if they want to wear their indigenous jumper for NAIDOC week they should be able to.

North should have a predominantly blue clash for games against Geelong and potentially Collingwood. If they had that, then they could have used it.

Respectfully that’s not “yes and no”, that’s just yes.

The afl gets approval over all jumpers and as part of their policy they can and should knock back stuff like North’s clash jumper.

The fixture is set pretty early, the afl absolutely has the power, capability and capacity to end this thread tomorrow if they wanted.

We have worn an all blue training jumper the last 2 years against Geelong.

If it’s the correct thing for North to wear white shorts in their home game against the dogs 2 weeks ago, why doesn’t the Bulldogs wear white short in their home game against the Blues Bulldogs v Blues other way around is a great match up, this way horrible. IMG_3054.jpeg IMG_3052.jpeg

Because Carlton should be in their bloody clash!

If the Bulldogs wore a white home jumper then yeah changing the shorts would be the right move, but not when they wear a coloured jumper.

All red clash kit from the doggies would be sweet though.

Another example where Carlton in navy blue jumper and white shorts does a piss poor job of creating contrast.

Carlton should either be in full preferred navy blue kit, or in a full alternate kit.

Collingwood cause the problem because they have a light front and a dark back. Most clubs are consistent with light/light or dark/dark. Collingwood have caused the problem copying Port Adelaide's old jumper and as usual the AFL are too gutless to do anything about it.

If you can't tell the difference between Carlton and the Dogs you are blind.

You have almost stumbled on the entire premise of alternate jumpers, to help provide maximum contrast for those who may not have perfect vision.

Carlton have played in baby blue, yellow, white and people know they are Carlton by the CFC logo.

It really aint a hard thing to do, but "tradition" prevents them from moving with the times.

If that's the case then the AFL really needs to step up and make Collingwood choose between light/light or dark/dark for their games.
Contrasting Colour is the solution. Not white shorts. Dark vs light is a red herring.

Carlton need to step up and actually create and use an alternate kit instead of thinking popping on white shorts does the job.

Home teams wear what they want, it is the away team that needs to have an alternate kit and a 3rd clash kit if required.

Not just Carlton either.

oh ok then. Well if home teams wear what they want and it's up to the away team to provide a third kit that doesn't clash, then we will wear navy blue and white stripes for our home games vs Collingwood. What is your 3rd clash kit going to be just out of interest?

It seems you continue to miss the point.

Adding white short to a navy jumper doesnt resolve any clash.

Carlton already have an alternate kit, they should actually use it.

And if a clubs preferred kit and alternate kit both dont create enough contrast with an opponent, they should then also create a 3rd clash kit.

They should knock back North's Clash jumper because it doesn't work against Geelong.

But Clubs should be able to settle on an away/clash jumper rather than changing every year to make sure they don't clash with club's one off jumpers.

Hypothetically if Adelaide vs Richmond, and Adelaide came up with a one off Yellow front, dark blue back jumper - what jumper should Richmond wear?

You have almost stumbled on the entire premise of alternate jumpers, to help provide maximum contrast for those who may not have perfect vision.

Someone’s quality of vision has nothing to do with it.

Effectively differentiate the match day teams. Make it easier on everyone, at the ground, on tele, with close ups and wide angles.

Adopt consistency in the principles and adhered to for all fixtures.

And folks arguing “home team wears what it wants”. No. Home team has priority to it’s home uniform.

Each club registers a home uniform, an away uniform (that differentiates from the home - not a North job), and the ‘choice’ of a third uniform.

Each club endeavours to wear its home uniform in every match.

If the home uniforms of the match day clubs are similar or likely to cause confusion, the away team wears change shorts/socks, away or third uniform, or a combination of its uniforms to effectively differentiate the match day teams.

Clubs are permitted to choose a special/commemorative/heritage/charity uniform in ONE match per season. This fixture is identified prior to the beginning of each season.
