Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

I’ll explain in more detail when I have more time.
But basically when the pressure gauge goes over 200, our excessive handballing backwards in chains of 6 or 7 hand passes, out of stoppages in an attempt to find the perfect target forward of the ball just does not work.

Inevitably someone fumbles when there’s pressure on the ball and we are suddenly scrambling and out of position defensively.

We went 3-8 in 11 games against the finalists. We went 0-4 when the season was in the melting pot in August.

Also it was the most even season ever. You talk as if these top 4 sides were miles ahead of us all season.

It’s not a talent issue either - we have 5 of the best 44 players in the league this year.

I really think if we add 1 or 2 quality small forwards, who can kick goals, provide pressure and we turn a lot of the losses into wins

Switta - 20 games, 12 goals
Frederick - 20 games, 23 goals
Banfield - 22 goals 20 goals
Walters - 17 games 17 goals

Your 4 small forwards on your list should average 1.5 goals a game. Ours are under 1.

Very uninformed and anecdotal view here but it seems to me the teams that go deep into finals seem to have either an arseh*le coach or an arseh*le captain (or sometimes both).

Toby Greene for GWS, Mitchell for Hawks, even Trent Cochin went from soft as bugger to a tough bustard.

We've got a brilliant defender in Pearce as captain but he's a hippie. JL is a shy farm-boy introvert. Remember when Mundy was captain for a year? Great bloke, skilful player and he was utterly woeful in firing the boys up. Reclaimed his form when he went back to being a player again.

Lyon was an arseh*le for us for years, it transformed Walters from wasted talent to one of the best small forwards in the league. I even remember him saying in early 2012 he hated Ross, had an offer tabled from Port and was gonna bugger off. Then he changed his attitude and became a real player.

There's no 'rockets' being fired up anyone's backside, there's critical feedback and quiet learnings. Even ex-players like Ballantyne and Crowley have been open with their concerns about how meek and nice we are.

The captain can and should be changed to Serong immediately - he has what it takes to drive the club to incredible standards, it'd be a bold and unscrupulous move - plus he's more likely to play more games than Pearce barring mass injuries.

As for JL, we all know he has another year at least - I'd be getting an assistant or someone else in with steel balls.

It really is mostly mental at Freo.
Good comment.
Would also like to see Serong get the job as captain.

Lachie Neale is another who has said the tough love he got from Lyon early days made him the player he was.

Players just began to panic, fumble not take shots.
Incredible how much changed 25 points up v Essendon. Never seen the change that drastic that bad. Players just felt tense
Crazy we lost that game to Essendon by a point.

Then we lost to cats, GWS and Port. All ended up in the top 4

I think the main issue and one that I dont think has any justification is the pressure. The one non-negotiable among the top teams, and top teams in finals is pressure. We are no where near either in the pressure gauge, or, if you want to right that off, just the eye test. It has to be better
Agreed if you want further proof of dockers and manic pressure being a good combination. Look at freos preliminary final win vs the swans in 2013

That's extremely harsh. Kingsley has proven nothing, he has the most talent in the league, Cameron was just a complete potato. Bevo is absolutely underdelivering on that list. I wouldn't swap JL for either of those two. Ken needs to prove something this year or he's just a hack honestly. Brad Scott has done nothing. Voss is a hack

Actually, this is a flat out ridiculous take. The only coaches I will definitively say are better are McCrae, C Scott, Horse and Mitchell. The rest is a toss of the coin.
Brad Scott's stint as North Melbourne coach from 2010 until 2019 is underated.

He got 4 finals wins in that 10 year stint. Mind you it was in 2 finals wins in 2014 and another 2 in 2015.

If he does a similar thing at Freo, that is succes to us

Ew all the Ross Lyon fanboys have returned
I don't blame them and I am one of them.

Some of us are still savouring that 2012-5 finals run. That's the only other time we had sustained finals run or made finals for at least 2 years in a row.

And it's not gonna change until another coach gets us to 2 Elim finals in a row

Thanks to reacting to my post JimmyBC lol

people wanting the second youngest side in the comp to beat 3 of the top 4 teams with Alex Pearce (who is also our captain, our best player and our most important player), Treacy, Darcy, and Cox on one leg all out are being a bit niave. No game plan or pump up speach can over come that. It hurts to lose but to come as close as we did to GWS was an elite performanec, especially considering how exposed they made us with out a fit Pearce and Cox with Hogan going nuts.

Stop talking sense

Stop talking sense

I find it funny how in a game that involves so much luck, a couple of points can completely change peoples views on a performance. Bailley doesnt give that 50m pen away, and we get given our 50m pen, we win the gws game and suddenly all the people bagging JL and all the players would be praising them for making finals under such adversity.

People need to learn how to support with heart but analyse with the head.

Not merely funny Boomer....
but so exasperatingly weird that it makes me wonder at the sheer folly of trying to talk football in a language everyone understands???

I barely understand my own thoughts on football so can’t expect anyone else to find any sense in what I post.

With just a hint of luck Ross Lyon is a multiple premiership coach and viewed as one of the greats, in the end he has zero and is viewed as a good coach that ultimately can't get it done. Sport is results based and JLo badly needs them to go his way in 2025.

It's a very fine line between success and failure as an AFL coach for sure. Ultimately it is about winning the Grand Final. Most will not win an AFL Grand Final.

Coaches need the cattle, they need a bit of luck at the right time. The coach needs to be able to influence the game in selection, tactics and the motivation of the team. He can do all those things and still come up short however.

Jlo has a very good young list. Luck is luck, so no point counting on that, just take it when it comes our way. JLO needs to perform better on the selection, tactics and motivation front or he will be out of a job at the end of 2025.

Far too sensible for big footy.

I think we are in the hunt for the flag next season. And the following one's. If Longmuir doesn't have us in a prelim next season move him on. Otherwise, he will be our first flag winning coach. He will also be our first multiple flag winning coach.

You gotta let people vent on this one. We are heading into "the positive ones are the stubborn ones" territory with JL. It has been 5 years now...

Next year is 100% make or break

If Schultz played this year, ........................... I think we win another 2, maybe more

If we find two small forwards who pressure (at least one) and kick 50 goals between them we are fine. (This is the optimistic half of me)

The other half of me thinks that Fyfe, Walters, JoM, Aish, Banfield won't play as well next year, and as many games, compared to this year, and we may drop off a bit next or just stay about the same, and then climb in 2026. (I think we only have the depth to replace 2 or 3 of them)

One mature age players would help a lot, and ideally they hit the ground running.

NonsenseThere's more quantitative and qualitative evidence that he's underperforming and won't be a premiership coach than there is evidence he's the next Leigh Matthews.
It's pretty obvious which group aren't using their heads.

If we landed Pickett and Bolton, we would be guaranteed to have a top four spot on talent alone. Not that it looks like it's just Bolton, we will get a better idea of his coaching capabilities.
