When you decide you are not going to renew a coach at the end of his contract it is always best to finish up straight away. Otherwise the final year is a constant tango between the coach, the club and the media as questions are continually asked about when the contract will be extended etc etc.
Always best to have a clean (well, as clean as possible) break rather than a year of media circus.
Great comment, Ross wasn’t going to be renewed as coach and next year would have been dreadful. Ross would have been having to deal with resigning questions constantly and if we had some losses which was highly likely the season would have been completely derailed. I’m so happy to see two of my favourite players sitting side by side and talking about Freo going forward. Go Justin, I’m on your side!

I've got no problem with giving Longmuir a chance and being positive but if we are not going in the right direction within a year or so then he'll be under the same heat.

I don't think it'll mean anything about sacking Ross or not so I disagree strongly about the "objectively the wrong decision by any measure" if things don't go well. Ross was on borrowed time either way. The board had marked his papers so regardless Ross was not going to be part of our future.

It takes more than a year to develop a culture and systems (implicitly internalised, not just explained on a white board) that can win premierships, let alone fixing the holes in our list. You are essentially setting up Longmuir to fail. Before we fix our issues we may end up losing more games than winning next year, and possibly even badly. Doesn't mean Longmuir isn't up to it.

I just don’t believe he’ll be better
Lyon had been terrible for a good 2/3 of his tenure with Freo. Apart from 2013 and 2015, he wasn't good. It was about time to get rid of him, and while Longmuir is inexperienced, every coach starts somewhere. I believe Longmuir is exactly what they're looking for, and what they need.

I've got a gut feeling to be hopeful and in late September after a season that's all I feel we've got to go on.
There's been a fair bit to be positive/thankful about lately...
  • West Coast didn't make a Grand Final/win another premiership - avoiding needing to leave the state for a while
  • Brisbane went out in straight sets - defusing the whole Neale finding success bs
  • Fyfe and Walters made AA
  • Fyfe was AA Captain resulting in hilarious whining about Hurn missing out
  • Fyfe won the Brownlow
  • Fyfe delivered an incredible speech that made neutrals stand up and applaud
  • Freo fans, neutrals and even some WC fans are pretty annoyed at The West for that woefully disrespectful front page
  • We got to observe the WA media scramble like idiots trying to claim innocence with Willie only for him to test positive and destroy their arguments
  • Donnellan (AFLW Captain) won the Emerging Leader Award
  • Longmuir appointed Coach and has said all the right things so far (giving us hope)
  • Some great potential candidates for CEO
  • Messaging from Alcock that we are going to take action with S&C (as a key priority)
  • Opportunity to bring in some really good assistants that are out there
  • It's 3 days to Trade Period - which obsessed footy fan doesn't love Trade Period?

And you are entitled to believe that

Lol go and start a thread on it then, don’t need this negativity crap regarding the new coach
Have to agree to a point on JLo, but should be judged on the collective, and that is where he will be better than Lyon.
We needed to bring more minds into the equation and Im sure JLo will.
Looking forward to a new direction at both Freo and Peel, and players being utilised better with their skill sets.

I think Peel is where a lot of our issues stem from. I was amazed at the lack of resources the club has and how it’s pretty much run by mums and dads and other volunteers. I wonder if VFL feeder clubs and the new West Coast Eagles WAFL side are run like this

I don’t think he needs to be better than Lyon.

Hopefully Longmuir will have some more competent assistants around him to make the team perform better than Lyon’s team. Part of that will be that there will be more money available to support the coach (rookie coach paid less than experienced coach) without breaking the soft cap. Part of it will be Longmuir’s more inclusive philosophy.
I think Lyon was one of the best tactical coaches ever. Longmuir will need support.

Always thought that was a excuse and still do, the token phrase "the players have to learn the plan and that takes at least a year" is nonsense.

Pass Marks
No Injuries to little injuries : Top 4 only
Medium Injuries top 2 - 6
High Injuries like this year just in the 8 or missing.
Additionaly I still want to see consistency which we have sorely lacked and would love to see a functioning forward line. Also need to lower the manic finals footy pressure which burns players out mid season and leads to the beating the top teams and losing to the bottom teams.

This is a strange phenomenon finding people that didn’t want Ross gone the only place I can find it is on BF, everyone I’ve come across and there’s been plenty wanted him gone.

Fair chance they’ve all mixed with each other in person before too.

It really is a very small section of our supporter base that rated him in the end.

After watching the press conference, I'm struck by the polar opposite universe this sits in contrasted with Lyon's appointment.

An older, more experienced, more polished and more portly Lyon. Came from a Melbourne smash grab operation with the two Steve's sitting opposite him.

Younger, less experienced, less polished and thinner Longmuir next to Bell and Alcock, after a long drawn-out recruitment process.

I like the polarities, although I'm unsure what indication it may serve over our future.

I was unhappy when Lyon was sacked, but I must admit to feeling a little unnerved when I saw SonSon at Cockburn Central with barely contained tears. The man was loved and adored by a select number of players at the club. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, it's good to love the coach and he certainly had his followers.

But it's not vital. Longmuir wants to instill a family first football club, but I believe what's won him over in its entirety is his tactical knowledge of the modern game and essential skill development.

The players may respect him, and grow to like him immensely but his job isn't to invoke that level of adoration in his players, it's to get them to a level of unprecedented skill and fitness under a winning game plan.

Flags are literally all that matters to the club, and I'm optimistic about the direction we're taking.

Also - the man was nervous, why? Because it's his first senior coaching gig, but more importantly - he's young. This might confuse some of our older supporters as being nervy isn't something you normally associate with success, it certainly wouldn't have worked for Churchill. But I think this nervous, youthful energy is uncertainty mixed with a healthy dose of creative innovation. Plus a really good footy brain.
