Not sure why people are complaining about this appointment. JLo is a good choice for the modern game.

Fact is, we were going nowhere under Lyon and he showed conclusively that he could not adapt to the way the game is run these days. There was absolutely no point in continuing with a bloke who was never going to improve.

I'm looking forward to the much needed changes that are coming

Longmuir keeps talking about culture

Culture is so so important in the modern game and I am positive Freo don't have it. All the rumours about rifts and Lachie neal and Weller and all these things. Where there is smoke there is some sort of fire.

The difference in culture can be seen between GC and GWS. For a few years there, every top player wanted out of the giants. This year thomolinson (who I personally don't class as best 22) and patton (who is held together by sticky tape) are the only real outs. Backing it up and having another crack after a GF.

And some players want in

Gold coast however, are hanging by a thread and I really sadly feel that they will become the new tassy team in a few years. I just can't see how they can turn it around. Yes they get extra picks, but then those picks will want a trade anyway.

The different is culture imo

Freo have the players to get it done, get them staying on the park, and wanting to be there, and there is no ceiling

I'm actually looking forward to what JLo might achieve in this area.

Apart from his obvious coaching smarts, which have been commented on by the clubs he's worked at, the word out of Melbourne is that he has achieved success at Collingwood because of his relationship with the players. If he can produce a strong team culture and a strong improvement ethos among the playing group, then he will ultimately be successful, where rigid approaches won't produce the same result.

Just had the misfortune of listening to that red headed maggot on 6PR today

Said he is getting messages from Freo supporters disappointed with the appointment
every time he said something that could have possibly been positive he had to follow up with "but"

Even took time out to have another dig at Lyon

unfortunately i can not see JLo get5ing much of a honeymoon on 6pr

FLOGS

Why get wound up over a couple of professional dickheads with a 'failed' agenda. Besides both Brad and Carl are rangas anyway, so don't count and crumpet face seems to have the IQ of a house brick. Do what I do....and just don't listen to PR. Pack of halfwit, inbred slime supporters on a good day.

I like Longmuir but it's hard to tell if he's going to be any good at the moment. All the modern day coaches talk the same crap about family, culture and teaching and honestly it's getting a little too cliche and tiresome. Hopefully Longmuir has more in the bag than his "I love Freo supporter/getting the best out each player" speech because It seems like regurgitated nonsense that Richmond were preaching 5 years ago. Also, I'll give him a break because he's young but I would have loved a bit more confidence and conviction in his words, that said, Dale Alcock seemed to have his balls clamped during the whole presser.

I was the biggest RTB fan so this is all hard for me. I'm looking forward to seeing what Longmuir can do but I'm not expecting miracles with the list we have. Hopefully the WA media and the Freo supporting hyenas give him a fair go because frankly we are a long way off if BHill and Langdon go.
Modern day coaches like Hardwick, Simpson & Clarkson?

Ross Lyon gave his everything to this club & it’s really important he’s not the scapegoat here, but he has deficiencies that he needs to improve on to coach the modern player.

The modern player has more rights, opportunities & options available to them & rightly or wrongly need to be coached accordingly. The players seem to have the power now.

Sure Longmuirs comments seem to be a regurgitated spiel that other coaches have preached but these exact points are what is taught at the Level 3 & 4 coaching courses.

Nathan Buckley has turned his career around based on the modern coaching techniques & it’s only natural that Longmuir would embrace it as well, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if Longmuir had played a part in a Buckley’s obvious change in coaching method.

I look forward to the change of approach & in any case, I support Freo, not the coach.

I would personally love for something like this for our hierarchy

CEO: Nick Marvin

President: Dale Alcock

Manager of Football: Peter Bell

Senior Coach: Justin Longmuir

Senior Assistant: Don Pyke

Assistant Coaches:
- David Hale
- Josh Carr
- Jaymie Graham
- Dean Solomon

That regurgitated nonsense worked out OK for Richmond winning two Premierships in the last three years. They practiced what they preached with coaches or captain taking vulnerable players into their homes to live with them. Have to say voting Peggy O'Neil as President in 2013 has helped them find and support players and coaches for success.

But I have no doubt their winning football culture has relied on decisions Neil Balme as GM Football has over seen. Poached from Collingwood in Sept 2016 and Premierships in 2107 and 2019. He was there to guide the first premiership for 37 years. Comes after going to Geelong at the end of 2006 and them breaking a 44 year Premiership drought with flags in 2007, 2009 and 2011 and losing a GF in 2008.

It's more than just the coach but sorry to say RTB would not listen or change for anyone until his balls were being clamped in the end. The press conference after one of our losses saying his players should practice skills in their own time, when he took them to the beach that week before the game for a training session was typical of his arrogance blaming players for what he should have been doing. Training skills and skills under perceived pressure at training only happened after he was ridiculed about this and was only at a basic level compared to WC.

This is a strange phenomenon finding people that didn’t want Ross gone the only place I can find it is on BF, everyone I’ve come across and there’s been plenty wanted him gone.
I guess it's a wider circle of people you hear from on here then. Maybe a few more deep thinkers?

Who is your forward systems assistant coach? I think the best in the AFL is Ashley Hansen. Has played 3 or 4 years in WAFL in Perth as well as 7 years at WC. IN charge of forwards at Doggies. Has to be the first target for Forward Coach.

Also who is goal kicking coach? Been under our noses for years and has put his resume into the Dockers but we refused because hey we don't need a goal kicking coach, because we're so good at that! Ask Ben Sokol how well he went after being coached by Austin Robertson Jr? I hear Subiaco have taken him on for next year. Better get in soon or another AFL team might!

Jlo I wish you success.
You have the intellect.
The supporter base is backing you for now.
A bit of injury luck and wise drafting.
Your a good bloke...I hope Freo doesn't send you too gray.

"Culture" as used about footy clubs usually just equates to winning and the resultant confidence. GWS wins more because they had much more generous concessions and because they win more, more players want to stick around. Both Lynch and May left because they couldn't see the Sun's being in contention while they were in their prime.

Every paying member has the right to be reconsidering their membership right now. This club is going through the ringer. I am cautiously optimistic but this is a massively key moment. Its the defining moment to see if our greatest ever player will get a flag or not. Freogirl is 100% right to be worried as all the others have a right for optimism. We f’ed it for Pav let's hope we haven't for fyfe.
As things have evolved, it is glaringly obvious there was no need to embarrass both Lyon and the club itself by pulling the trigger a week early.
I am really circumspect that the Bell / Longmuir team are back together as both were the protagonists to get rid of Connolly as Justin was not being played as Number One Ruck.

Ultimately, I'm really excited to see what Justin can do to transform this club into the powerhouse that Dale has said we should become. I was extremely impressed by his press conference and it did nothing but instills me with confidence for the 2020 season. He's young, wise and extremely passionate about the Dockers, which is what we want to see from our head coach. Seeing him back in that purple polo was amazing to see and you can see how much he wants to lead this club to its first flag. While he looked nervous he answered everything really well even though there were some pretty odd questions coming from some media personnel and he took it all on the chin and acted very professionally. It was a good start to see him refuse to criticise the club's position from before he arrived as not only is it unprofessional to bag the former coach, it just shows that he's centralised and focused on our future as a club.

Wouldn't say a lot. Less than half his time as an assistant coach. Also didn't you see what came out early? Wa media was wanting us to appoint a WA/ex Freo person
Ive got the impression the media wanted us to pick Sumich cos dA BoyZ cLuB. If he was coach and he succeeded, they would be lauding him and if he was a failure, they’d say give him 5 years to build his own team. I can see the opposite now, them ready to s**t on Lyon if Longmuir has some success and have the knives out, saying Sumich was the right guy if we don’t have some early success.

Freo has basically killed Sumich’s hopes of becoming an AFL senior coach and his mates aren’t happy about it.

Or those with differing opinions get drowned out? Have noticed a few ‘regulsr’ posters have not dared to comment.

the bullying on here is insane
While i'm 100% behind the Pro-Longmuir camp I agree with you. I think it's silly for people to be rude to other posters simply because they're skeptical of how well he'll do or if they thought that someone else would be a better fit. That's life, we all have different views, there is no right or wrong.

It’s not only today, it happens way too often on other topics as well
