Trying to think of an example of a coach that was sacked prematurely but drawing a blank - Can anyone think of an example of a coach with a poor record at a club that was sacked and was later succesful?

Or even a coach that was generally written off publicly but later won a flag?

My faith in JLo gets less and less with every game that passes. Despite having a crack in the second half, we look like we have no clue which is very reminiscent of the late Lyon era. Besides the midfield coach, I think we also need to replace the defensive coach with a more offensively minded one. These assistant coaches are honestly rubbish.

Eagles are looking like they will sack Simpson which is bad for us because they will go straight for Pyke. I don't think we are ready to sack JLo and will more likely give him another year. We could potentially miss out on Pyke like we did with Chris Scott.

Yes. The pressure is much greater early in the game as players are fresh. That's why our first quarters are rubbish, the JL game style does not hold up to high pressure.
There’s no gameplan in the first quarter because the players put themselves under pressure losing clearances, the ground ball pressure is poor.
The first goal was exactly how it should work. Corbett led to the square.
The midfield have not set the tone consistently this season.

Same thinking too. Need aggressive midfield coaches, because it’s not taking any advantage of Darcy, Serong and Brayshaw’s strengths.

Hardwick. Post 2016 was grim. 100 point loss. Should’ve got rid of him then. Didn’t even look like a good coach

Longmire walked in the job with Roos leaving a strong culture and well loved club.
Chris Scott. He walked into a flag team from day 1. He should’ve been sacked or moved on numerous times.
2011 to 2021 is a long time without a flag.

Worst of all? Hinkley. He’s well underperformed. Kept his job for 4 years not making finals.

Hardwick had Cotchin though leading, not pearce… and as far as i remember wasn’t as distant as JL is from the players.

Wonder if Simpson could defect, his game plan is at least a little more modern than JL

If we get belted in Geelong next week, which we will, theres no way the club can justify keeping him around.

It would be brave. Bell would also need to be looked at if we are making that call.

We have a lot of talent across the ground and 5 -7 genuine A graders to build around.

I am having flashbacks feeling like we are in a 2003-2010 period. Made the finals with a young and exciting team. didn't get back for a couple of years and then wasted the following and prime years of our stars careers.

Good call on Hardwick actually. Best example of a coach that was severley under the pump and redeemed himself completley.

^
A few posters have called on us to pounce on Hardwick. Why? He has acheived what he wants with his career and I can't think of anything worse than him coming in swinging his dick around and treating Freo as his pet project.

Hinkley is by far the biggest underacheiver. He's older than I am but by the time I die of old age he'll somehow still be coaching that club and having a laugh.

Simon Goodwin. Made a prelim in 2018, then bottom four in 2019 and 9th in 2020 before winning the flag in 2021.

Great example too. Can't believe the Dees have stuck with Goodwin after going through such unbelievable lows together. They'll be good for a while yet but I can't see them winning another flag with him.

Luke Beveridge comes to mind as well - up and about after a second relative trough.

I don't think he's getting sacked and I don't think its a good idea to do it this year either. We're obviously terrible but this stuff happens.

He'll be nervous if we're still playing like this at the bye next year though. You couldn't defend it two years in a row.
He'll be more cooked than a Christmas turkey if we're playing like this at the bye because our record would be North-like. 2-9 or whatever would be catastrophic, to say the least.

The thing that concerns me more than anything else this season - is that guys are not playing on instinct, and seem to concerned about their man, and not making a mistake, rather than playing the ball.

There are just so many instances of someone not making a tackle, and not being quick enough to close down space. Guys will go for the safe 15 metre lead up kick because they are too afraid of taking the game on. We are an incredibly stagnant team at the moment.

Longmuir said guys are "internalising"

I had never heard the expression before but if that means not playing on instinct then he is right. The problem is, the responsibility of this mindset does come down to the coach, and if he can't fix it, let's get someone who can.

This is exactly what I am thinking well said just cant put the finger on why we cant transition to a top 4 team we are probably one big midfielder short which hopefully Erasmus,Johnson or maybe Chapman can fill although he probably plays half back in Hughes current position?

Garlick has just owned up to deliberately throwing Justin under the bus by going younger with their list management. Can't help thinking Bell, Garlick, and Wells should be sacked first
We lost Acres, Mundy, and Lobb in one trade season.

The reality is that our list is pretty young but pretty good.

Justin Longmuir is the issue.

It's worrying but as bad as things are it can all change and click pretty quick.

He's got 12 months..

Funny, everyone used to say that about the team when Ross was coaching and Connelly.

Wasn't the big 2006 turn around due to the team saying to Connelly, just let them play and don't try to control everything.
