Let's see.
She confirms 2018 is a waste of time .
THere must be money & time wasted there .
Bids must be in by May yet AO funding is still be to consideredand Perth has nothing .Also a change of government could change things .
The government is workin hard obviously to smooth over the mistakes already made .
Not one mention of a working model , with stadiums ,costings or even benefts . Just it's great for the economy but talks about Germany a totally different scenario then RSA but the need to build hotels and airports .
She may as well have been a BF poster - "trust me".
The fact is she didn't give one fact . Didn't have an idea on Adelaide or Perth .Didn't know why Benito left .
Yes , a real poltician , won't be pinned down by incriminating facts .

Actually she did know that the AL is shaky and the FFA is wholely reliant on the government .

Even a silly woman like her (FFS how does someone like her become a Federal Minister?) has woken to the fact that this bid is a con and the Govt has just blown $43 + million on NOTHING.

As I've said many times, Lowy asked, Rudd gave the cash - but apart from that, there's no real personal buy in from the PM

The upshot is that soccer in Australia has received $40mill+ of PR at taxpayer expense.

Good work by Lowy.

These politicians think they can pick up a few extra votes by backing a minority sport in this country, but do they realise how many votes they will lose if their favouritism causes actual harm to the most popular game in the nation?
If AFL clubs fold because of the massive government bias shown to soccer, we will know who to blame.
Rudd, Brumby, Ellis, Merlino - we will never forget how you shafted us!

Rudd & Brumby will be long gone well before 2022. As for Ellis, I hardly think she will be "blamed" for anything.

Dont wish to be a spoiler of this thread but the government is helping out the round ball game beacuse they have over 1 million participants in this country which means they have potentially 1 million votes, and that only includes participants what about the mums and dads and volunteers of their game.

AFL and NRL should not be concerned with the threat of other codes but should highlight the great points of their owns games.

Cornsey got Pawned good and proper... What a fool, he should of done some research before making a complete idiot of him self.

Cornes is a good bloke and wears his heart on his sleeve.

But unfortunately, during the interview he lets slip the real reason for his opposition to Australia's bid for the world cup.

Twice he says:

"It's a huge leg up for soccer." "It's an enormous leg up for soccer."

It is sad that a legend like Cornes should use his privileged media position to try to put down another sport.

Cornes is right - it is a massive leg up for soccer at taxpayer expense.

This whole bid is about getting a leg up that soccer could never have managed on its own - all funded by the taxpayer.

Without a WC, soccer plods along as is for the remainder of the century - 5,000 at games and poor ratings.

Graham Cornes a legend who couldnt make the cut in the VFL, goes back to SANFL with his tail between his legs.

Absolutely no-one dispute this .

It's a pity the Feds don't have the same attitude to other sports .

Oh boo f*cking hoo!

The feds give money to a shitload of other sports, the $45.6m given to the FFA for the World Cup bid is something different.

I'm sure if those other sports had an event as large as the FIFA World Cup then the Feds would provide money to them to get them the event.

Perhaps instead of bitching you should look at why other sports (you're clearly referring to the AFL) don't get as much funding as the FFA. Rudd is the first PM to realise that Football (Soccer) has the ability to assist with international relations in a big way, especially in the key Asian markets.

This is something that no other sport can offer and quite rightly, as they should, the FFA are exploiting this and it's paying dividends for them.

This is something sponsors will realise in time as well. We've seen Tourism Malaysia drop their Carlton sponsorship and take up sponsorship with Melbourne Victory for their Asian Champions League campaign.

I'm not saying we'll see a mass exodus of sponsors from the AFL, I'm not that stupid. But if the A-League continues to grow and as the Asian Champions League becomes bigger, companies, who don't have as much money to spend on sponsorships, will be looking for more bang for their buck and if they're looking to expand into Asia then the A-League and ACL can offer them something the AFL or NRL can't.

That's probably 10 years minimum away from happening though.

Well the SA state government are putting a shitload of money into Adelaide Oval and that's for football, not soccer. Clearly a massive boost for football, at the expense of the taxpayer

Also that sport funding report that came out recently suggested that there should be more money put into sports with higher participation, so AFL could benefit there.

Hang on - isn't the story we hear that a redeveloped Adelaide Oval will be used in the World Cup?

How can you conclude from that that doing so is not a benefit to Soccer?

It clearly is!

But - it also recognises that Soccer will not be able to pay the bills for this sort of sized Soccer stadium so the main tenants must be the Australian Football clubs.

Afterall - how much did the SA Government put into AAMI Stadium? Weren't they supposed to build a train line out there - how did that go?

Being for the benefit of "Soccer" doesn't just mean being used for the World Cup.

Look at any release from the SA Govt about the stadium, you'll struggle to see any mention of it being used for the World Cup. All they talk about is Footy and Cricket.

And then they'll have a separate management run the stadium, and who will run it? That's right Footy and Cricket.

So what, after the World Cup has been and gone, do "Soccer" get out of the stadium? Absolutely nothing.

But McCrann's essential point is correct - billions of taxpayer dollars directed to one sport is obviously for the benefit of that sport. It's not just the infrasctructure, but ultimately, it's a billion dollars (minimum) of taxpayer funded PR to help just one sport.

Hang on - when has Soccer proved it can support this kind of redevelopment long-term? Show me the evidence?

But looking at Australian Football - there is 100+ years of history to show that it can support this kind of redevelopment and pay for itself over the years.

Why should the Government fund a loss-making exercise in perpetuity merely to make you feel good about yourself?

Being for the benefit of "Soccer" doesn't just mean being used for the World Cup.
It is a major part of it. The stadia in Adelaide and Perth will need to be FIFA compliant as well. The other benefit is massive PR for the next 12 years for $0 input from the FFA.

Look at any release from the SA Govt about the stadium, you'll struggle to see any mention of it being used for the World Cup. All they talk about is Footy and Cricket.
Because the FFA can't get its act together and publicly name the 12 stadia for the bid. The SA Government can't say it's for the WC when nothing is official yet.

And then they'll have a separate management run the stadium, and who will run it? That's right Footy and Cricket.
As Lowy said who cares as along as we get the WC here in 2022.

So what, after the World Cup has been and gone, do "Soccer" get out of the stadium? Absolutely nothing.
Who cares. Soccer gets massive PR for $0 input for 12 years leading into the WC.
