I am an effeminate practicing homosexual and applaud Sheedy's comments. It only makes people uncomfortable because they deep down don't want to think about it.

Leave identity politics out of the game.

Ideally, yeah.

But if you think we're anyway near the point where gay people can just come along into the game, relax and be themselves then you're kidding yourself.

Unfortunately they're gonna need this type of encouragement and support for some time yet. Many people still can't leave identity politics (they fact they're gay) out of the game.

The 10 year campaign of 'you must be gay if you don't support gays' was an interesting and effective experiment but your explanation is a better one.

Of course gay or bi people can go and watch the footy. How can anyone tell what sexuality people are at a game? And who gives a **** anyway?

But I guess it depends what you mean by 'be themselves'. If they are going to wear leather chaps with the arse missing or do a rendition of YMCA after every goal they would probably get a few looks.

Definitely no one at the footy ever says anything derogatory towards gay people ever, you're right.

Perhaps they mean being able to hold your boyfriend's hand, or give him a kiss in public without getting stared at.

I go to football matches to watch football not to learn about political issues. Got a problem with this take a hike to Canberra and whinge about it.

If accepting people that aren't heterosexual is political then one side of politics better get its act together.

It's acceptance, love and inclusion. When I see that, I don't see politics.

Incestual relationships and marriage will probably be next on the agenda of sexual equality and people opposing that will be labelled ignorant, incestphobes, cavemen etc the same way people are now when they oppose same sex relationships and marriage, it might take a while but will slowly be normalised. Interesting times ahead

Yeah of course. Mate I think we will have an adulterers round soon too!

Moron.

Why do you think Sheedy means by saying that all homosexuals are beautiful people and that they don't do the crap things that heterosexuals do.

You can spin it however you want but that's a bloody bizarre statement.
You seem really triggered that Sheeds was being Sheeds.

Yeah, it was a stupid comment but **** me have you gone on about it, also bringing up Catholic priest crimes against children and comparing it to homosexuality? just what the actual **** are you on about in here?

Bigot Footy never fails to disappoint.

Let me guess - soon we can f*** dogs and the PC snowflakes will be lining up behind poor Lassie?

The AFL has a great deal of cultural and community influence; they have the capacity to fundamentally change the way, we as a community, approach certain issues.

Sexual inequality cannot be justified on any reasonable intellectual or moral grounds. The 'Bible' or any other religious propaganda is not a sound justification for legislating discrimination.

The AFL can play a major role on these issues. In most cases it is good for society and good for the league's brand. So I certainly hope that the AFL does do a little more on this issue; in the same way that I hope they do more on other issues.

Sheedy's phrasing is a bit clumsy but his heart appears to be in the right place. Whether you like or loath him, Sheedy has been a progressive voice within football circles for decades. So I think those who are criticising him based on his quoted comments are probably missing the broader point.

ah, yes, but religious inequality and vilification on the grounds of religious beliefs is totally ok apparently. So tolerant. so progressive.
