Key Position Succession Planning

Thought about adding this to the 'Dalrymple' thread but it's not specifically about him.
Both last year and this we've stocked up on smalls (onballers and now forwards). Obviously the two father sons have contributed to this situation, but is the trend now sowing seeds for future problems considering that there's still a couple more of years of slim pickings in the drafts?
A quick look at our Key Position players sees only only Hall (34 start 2011), Lake (29 start 2011), Williams (slowly getting there) and Jones (still developing). Grant, I don't believe has the physique for a KP.

We can't expect much from Mulligan, Boumann, Markovic or Tiller based on what we've seen so far, not even sure if they'll all be there next year.

So, if any of our 3 main KPs get injured or drop off next year where is the depth to replace them?

Every time i see James Mulligan at uni I wish he was better at footy. He is massive.
I would assume next year we will be going after some key position players. Obviously have enough smalls now. Maybe a small backline player too.

I think we expect Cordy to play a fair bit up forward in the coming years, as well as Roughead. But i do believe we are in need of a young KPD to take over from Lake.

Apparently Cordy is better forward than in the ruck. When him and Roughy are #1 and #2 rucks we are going to be going pretty good in that area. We just need some good key backs.

+ Cordy and Panos, forwards look ok but we desperately need a key back to come through soon.

What about shifting Grant to the back line ? He has pace to break the lines and reads the play quite well

Forward wise we should be alright with players like Cordy, Roughead, Panos coming in, next years draft i'd bring in another key forward.

Key backs are a huge problem, when Lake is injured we could be in trouble, In the Rookie Draft.

Boumann is the one who i think actually has the potential to be a good player, he needs a good pre-season and to put his foot forward.

Can't see Markovic or Mulligan playing AFL anytime soon, so weather it be in the Draft, or Rookie Draft we need another young KPD

Doesn't have the body presence to play as a defender. Don't think he ever will.

Not sold on Panos yet - with all due respect to the kid, he seems a bit like a poor man's John Anthony.

Cordy did seem comfortable on the HF line, but it's hard to know where he will develop. I'd perfer Jones as CHF - he can play the position and allows Grant to play the leading/marking and sometimes crumbing forward role he appears to be settling into.

I would love a developing CHB/FB type, but there do seem to be few available. I am not happy we let Faulks slip through our fingers.

Boumann will never be big/strong enough to play key position.

Jones would be a star at CHB, but how often does a true CHF come along??? So it would be a shame to have to use him there.

Markovic isnt up to it. Lucky we picked up Faulks like we've been hoping for all year.....no wait.

Never is a long time, and while that seems the case now I think this kid can make it. His physical attributes are not the issue. He's very tall, very athletic and is very good one on one. Just a case of how bad he wants it. Similar things were said of Grant this time last year.

Agree on Marko....great aerialist but probably too slow damn it! I also agree that Jones could play CHB and should at times this year. No reason he couldn't be both just like Chris Grant was at times.

I still think that Panos is good enough to be FF/CHF. Just his first year so he has work on fitness. But he just knows where the goals are and just finds a way to get on the end of it. And by golly he can kick!

We will have to be recruiting at least one if not 2 Tall defenders in the draft/rookie draft. One would probably be a mature age...Pedderson from box hill springs to mind.

If a combination of Grant, Cordy and Roughead can play forward, perhaps Jones could become a key defender for us in the future?

He certainly looks the most likely given his attributes, but also looks like he could become our answer at CHF.

WTH?
As explained several times. He was never ours to let "slip through our fingers". Just because we watched him at Willi gives him a pathway to the Dogs? Nothing the club can do. GC nabbed him early for leverage. He won't be the last Willi player to go to another the AFL club in next few years.

Since our reserves coach watched every single game he played last year, we would have a very firm opinion of his abilities and whether he was worthwhile.

I guess the feeling is that people assume we did think he was worthwhile, but we misjudged whether other teams might go early at him, or that we were too involved with other deals to wrap him up like Freo did for next to nothing.

We used our 3rd rounder on Djekurra for instance, so we had no third rounder to swap with GC, and even if we did, our 3rd rounder was higher than Freos.

I think we probably would have liked to snare him for a 4th or 5th rounder, but Freos interest and their earlier 3rd round pick made it impossible, unless we wanted to forgo Djekurra and just give GC our 3rd rounder for Faulks straight swap. Which player would you rather have?

Kelvin31, of course he wasnt ours to lose. But you dont think with our history with Clayton we couldnt have got something done with GC if we showed more ugrency with it??

Who would I prefer out of Faulks and ND?? Absolute no-brainer. Happy to predict 150 AFL games for Faulks. Shame it wont be in the red, white and blue.

I Think you will find Brian Lake will end up playing out his years in the forward line, thus meaning Williams heading to FB

2010 finished
2011 Last year With Hall

2012 With Hall gone we will see Grant slip in at FF this might be the right time to move Lake back Forward, with Cordy and Roughead playing ruck/Forward

2013 Could be lake's last year, and touch wood Williams (120 odd games) Grant and Jones (60-75 games)

given that we have Lake till the end of 2013, we have time to see if Willaims and Jones can hold down CHB and FB

I wish some folks would realise Faulks, despite being an accomplished VFL player, however has NOT proven a thing at AFL, therefore, cannot be held up as a messiah for our club. Some fans need to take a reality check re: members of our MC, coaching and development groups got to see Faulks EVERY WEEK. Had they thought of him as highly as some fans, they'd have made a move. 2) Pretending/assuming you know more than these professionals, AND that your opinions are more important/valid than theirs reeks of delusions of grandeur. I have faith in our recruiting crew.

I do however concede that a back up KPD DOES need to be developed asap.

hooroo....

Anyone have any ideas on who we will target with our picks in the draft? 74-90-91 I think. Pretty sure well go tall, who do you think will be available?

Remembering Lake was pick 71, I'm sure we'll big up a project backman with one of them. Other two will just be the best 2 players left over after the rest are gone.

Half back flanker with pace, a tall forward (project player) and nippy rover type.
