McStay, Mitchell, Hill, Schultz
mitchell is dead in the water. mcstay might be solid....and lachie is good for a couple of years. Hill might go to hollywood to star in movies. He might have moved on like darcy.

i think billy had his moment in the sun. The young brigade dont do much for me. That last game by allen ...or should i say his first 20 minutes... was a ray of hope in a sea of plodders. markov has gone fishing. brody is on his last legs. Every player that I look at is on the decline...

Just look at the list and tell me these guys can do it without the guys retiring at the end of next year.

The whole point is that they don't have to be really long term. I'm just talking about until the blue chip guys - JDG and Moore are at the end. We'll be able to make another Mitchell type short term move at the end of next year.

Predicting after that - who the **** knows for any club.

seriously i was feeling a bit better about darcy in the last couple of games but i'm still not sure if he's interested in footy. Jordie has been good tethered to pendles for the last few years. But a few good players dont provide premierships. We might find out a bit next year even before the oldest oldies chuck it in.

There's no doubt that pessimism gives you the future options of happy or right, so it probably is the way to go. But I'm not sure that you're combing through other lists and saying this 150+ game quality player is only good because of having the 35 year old near him.

well we won the premiership last year so we're not on our last legs...

Wow! Who took a sip from the pessimism tap? Lachie good for a couple of years? Mitchell dead in the water? McStay might be solid? Mihocek has plenty of life left in him and injury means he only played half the season so he is well rested and fresh in 2025. DeGoey missed months as did McStay and Mihocek. We lost our most important defender before a ball was bounced in 2024.

Howe, Sidey and Pendles were all walk up best 22 starters and deserve another tilt. The Daicos boys, Hill, Beau, Crispy, Schultzy, Quaynor, Moore, Darcy Cameron, Degoey, Allan are all going to provide years of quality football. Throw in a fiery young ruckman called Smit, Demattia, Jiath and Reef still have something to offer and a couple of savvy trades will see us right back up where we belong.

In spite of what many deem to be a catastrophic year we were within a bee's willy of playing finals footy again and would have given all comers a good fight. We beat Brisbane twice and they might well be premiers. We finished with a head of steam. We were all over Sydney until the final ten minutes- beat the Blues twice and thumped Melbourne twice.

We have a quality coaching team and a mighty army.

I'm optimistic about 2025.

i think we have a good chance next year...

It's going to be like this for the next 2 years. We are going all in for a flag over the next 2 years. It's why we decided to keep our veterans. People need to get used to the idea for the next 2 years. I'll take another flag over the next 2 years rather than being bog average.

Two years is ambitious.

Next year, we're all in. Then, well, it's a firesale again..... We should be back up to the finals by the time Nick is 26 or so. :)

Next year we'll be okay. It's the year AFTER that we should be worried about. Just look at the ages of the players -- Mihocek, McStay, Mitchell, Pendles, Sidey, Howe.... De Goey, Moore, Crisp in two years will all be past their prime.

So the question is: are we happy to go all-in next year and take the plunge over the cliff? I'm not, because I don't think our list is good enough now to compete with the best. I've been wrong before, but I think it's likely we start resembling post-2019 West Coast, or Melbourne this year. Aging, slow. with few talented youngsters.

We beat Lions twice this year. And lost to Swans by 3 points.

We have the best player in the league that is only 21. Apart from this year's draft, we've taken first round picks in the last 4 years so we still have promising youngsters like Allan and Demattia to develop.

Schultz was a bad trade. If we still have pick 10 this year we could've been in the running for AA Houston. But there still should be ways for us to get back into the first round of this year's draft through Noble plus our F1. We just need Leppa to be a strong negotiator instead of doing the GW.

I reckon everyone else is very mediocre, so an ageing good team led by an excellent coach and ex-captain stand as good a chance as anyone else. Look at the top 8 this year, none of them are particularly intimidating. It's been almost a total lottery who wins each game half the time.

It won't be a firesale. The oldies aren't sellable. Before the start of 2026 we will have added 15-20 new players. We'll only need a few of the recruits to be ready to cover retirements.

It’s amazing how many people don’t get this. All you have to do is check the difference between out 2018 GF team to our 2023 GF team

Reckon you're projecting a bit here. I think the point is, we have a list where a lot of our top performers are aging. So sure there'll be turnover, the question is, how talented will our list be by the end of it. THAT, is what the discussion is about.

Our cream is no longer Pendles and Sidey. It's Nick, Moore, JDG and Josh.

Mihocek and McStay both have a good 3 or more years left in them. Degoey and Moore even longer and Crispy has shown enormous resilience and will hopefully kick on for another two or three years. The time when 30 or 31 was considered nearing the end are gone. Look at Zorko playing better than ever at 35.

We pick up McGuane next year and no doubt have a war chest ready when Howe, Coxy, Pendles and Sidey retire. I'm confident we will remain more than competitive.

Cats added 9 new players from their premiership team to their prelim team two years later - like us in terms of 2026, they had 2 trade/draft periods in between - those 9 were a combination of recruits and kids on the list in 2022 who weren't ready for seniors yet.

Over the next 2 recruiting periods we'll recruit about 16 players and have about 8 youngsters already on the list who might become best 22 by 2026 and to cover retirements will only need to find half the number of senior players as the cats did and with a bit of luck we should still have a strong top end.

It really isn't time to stress out about what's coming soon, because who knows for most teams and with our top end players having time left, we're in pretty good shape.

I'd say Hawks did rather well with the players they brought in too.

You're right Geelong have done it. Sydney too.

They're the outliers though. Really hard to duplicate I think.

That's the debate there. I think Mihocek is already in decline a little. Crisp too. Just 5-10% down. Pendles, Howe, Sidebottom -- alll obviously not what they were. De Goey and Moore both have histories with injury.

Zorko is also an outlier.
