Apparently he said this to his players during his days coaching Brisbane in order for his charges not to miss finals games due to attending the birth of their children.

Do family commitments become before your employer or in this case because it is something that is controllable he has a fair point?

Bottom line - Did Matthews overstep the mark?

Also, would you be resentful if your team was in the finals and a key player made himself unavailable for a big finals match due to the birth of his child?

seems like the smart option for players.

also for earlier finals it would be december, not january that would be the effected timeframe. a mid november conception arriving two weeks late would start to creep into september, but you'd probably induce the birth by that point... a grand final pregnancy is likely to have a conception anywhere from mid december to mid january. potentially outside of these times but likelihood diminishes.

that being said, it's probably beyond the limits of the employer or coach to say such things. it's entirely upto the player.

also i think the majority of people would miss a game for the birth of their child, particularly their first one.

So just with the girlfriends on the side eh ?

gotcha.

Kinda makes sense though.

Seams pretty smart to me.

It is a bit odd at first glance, but it makes sense from the team perspective. Matthews really did leave no stone unturned, didn't leave a lot to chance.
