Leppa sacked

The opinion I want on both this sacking and rocky is Mitch Robbos. I think the people who have experienced the most are usually well suited to look at the wider issues. Anyone got an inside for info from him?

And if he showed an interest in being traded I'd hand my membership card in and take up an interest in .. Anything else.

I think the emphasis placed on blooding the youth is a bit exaggerated now to suit the narrative and the bit about the board moving the goal posts is just nonsense. I'm sure no one ever said don't worry about winning games just go out and play the kids. Our defeats and the nature of them were far worse than anyone (including Leppa) would have predicted. That and the fact that the senior players seem to have regressed made his position untenable. Yeah the other things like the draw and injuries didn't help but I don't think we saw enough to suggest that Leppa was going to be able to lead the club back up the ladder. It was telling that even he thought it would take another three years for a moderate degree of success. He was never going to get three more years to get us to near finals contention (six in all) and if that is what it will take we may as well see if someone else can do it sooner.

+1 :thumbsu:

We know Caroline Wilson is letting her agenda cloud her judgement when she is claiming the appointment of Lambo hasn't worked? I mean c'mon.

We've re-signed every youngster.

Yeah, I'm fine with Craig.

You saying you want me back ?!?!?!?!

Wouldn't have that bloke back in a fit. Is total poison as a coach. Wouldn't play real talent when we're below average.... Cost us yeow and docherty in particular! Has poisoned port midfield since he arrived there.

No idea where you're getting this from.

not saying I would have him back, but why did he cost us Yeo & Doc? Did they get sick of playing games early in their career over pick 5 Polec?

As defences go, it's a bit lacking. Not one word about what he actually did and why it was the right thing to do.

I find the idea of Leppitsch as a blameless and passive victim of circumstance pretty hard to stomach. Letting the drawbacks of your environment define you is probably an indicator of someone struggling in their role.

Is it really written as a defense of Leppa but?

Surely it's more an overview of a larger picture?

To be honest - not sure what the issue is with sending out an email, players would be off doing their Mad Monday things/going home etc and to gather all of them into a room at the Gabba before word got out to them through unofficial means would be almost impossible. Better to get on the front foot there, can't go phoning 40 odd people either.
Agreed

Played docherty as a sub in about 8 or 9 of his games ... He couldn't believe he was getting the vest, know that for a fact.

So it all begins again.. In order
A. New Coach appointed for four years.
B. Says after three Months our list is stuffed and we need a total rebuild which will take four years. ( just ensuring he sets himself up for a full four years and giving nil expectation)
C. In 2017 and 2018, more heartbreak for the long suffering supporters.
D. In 2019 we are told that things are starting to take shape but will still take two years to see the results and gets the coach another years extension.
E. Off the back of mediocre improvement in 2019, 2020 doesn't deliver the promise of finals (yet again)
F. Coach gets sack... Repeat steps A through F.
Sound familiar?

Dumped yeow after playing 2 or 3 really good games ... Picked him again 2 weeks later played a really solid game in a losing team dumped him again. Voss did not connect with the younger players at all. I was chatting with a player boundary side at the time and another one of the go home 5 came over and chatted to us and he couldn't understand why he was the emergency and had to sit in the box and listen to voss go off his head for 120 minutes. He said he got nothing out of sitting in the box.

Hope no one gets motion sickness, because this merry-go-round is only just starting, and we'll be on it for a very, VERY long time.

Which will make a lot of people down south very happy.

Haven't seen the press conference.
I've read all the anger here.

There's no good way to deliver bad news that everyone has known was coming for weeks.
Based on what I've read, the board has acted appropriately here. They appear to have made it clear that no other coaches have been approached and that the final decision was made today. From that point they have acted swiftly and decisively.
I think they gave Leppa and the players respect by letting him see out the year, rather than the drama of a mid-season sacking. Whether that strategy is correct, at least it shows process.
No problem with an email to the players. Everyone of the players has a smartphone and will have been aware of the final decision before the press conference. Delaying the public declaration of the decision until you can get all the players together and then the cameras on the players as the arrive at the club only continues the circus. Getting it out there immediately is the cleanest way to get the bad news Lions off the back page, and honestly it's the best thing for Leppa and his family.

More tough times at the club, but we have time to sort out the new coach and coaching structure, and hopefully avoid a mass player exodus in the process if done correctly. We still have to find someone willing to move to Brisbane, but with the financial changes coming from the AFL at least we'll be able to offer a competitive football department package that wasn't available to Leppa or Voss.

I wish Leppa all the best. As shit as it is, he seems pretty resilient and will no doubt be well employed at his next club.

Well written and surprisingly insightful. The only thing I don't agree with is the bit about the club not having the guts to stick to the plan (by retaining Leppa).
A balanced article compared to Caros trash talking kick em when theyre down piece. Am oiginally from St Aust & there is every good reason why everybody outside of Vic hates the vic media. Footy in Qld is in deep Sh#t if the VFL don't wake up real quick, or don't they realy want a team in Brisbane? Love Leppa, sorry to see him go but its happened so time to move on. Think some of the senior players have a lot to answer for and Caro get of lambos back you spitefull ........

But this is how I want it to read.
A. New Coach appointed for four years.
B. Says after three Months that our list of youngsters is second to none and with some proactive drafting and a solid preseason he can see no reason why we can't be competitive every week and improving accordingly.
C. In 2017 and 2018 we retain all the youngsters and build in all the areas of experience and hardness that has been lacking through savvy drafting, luring some genuine talent. 7 wins in 2017 followed by further improvement and genuine excitement for the fans winning 11 games and making the Gabba the most feared away venue for opposition teams once again.
D. Coach gets a contract extension not on promise but results in 2019 with Reece Mathieson winning the Brownlow and Schache winning the Coleman, Brisbane once again challenging for finals. Membership up after Gold Coast fold and players are requesting moves to Brizzy during trade period in record numbers.
E and F. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Coach given life membership
