I think the team will be something like this now:

Warner
Rogers
Watson/Bailey/Doolan/Hughes
Clarke
Smith
Bailey/Faulkner
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
Harris
Lyon/Ahmed

Only a few variables really. The first is whether Watson plays. If he does, you'd think Bailey is a lock at 6. If Watson doesn't play though, it's likely (albeit stupid) that the selectors will feel that they need a 5th bowler and Faulkner will be picked. That would mean that they'd have to make a choice on whether to play Bailey (or Clarke or Smith) at 3, or bring in Doolan/Hughes to play that role.

I think they should pick Bailey no matter what, but the selectors may be too scared to pick him to bat at 3. Who knows?

The other variable is Lyon vs Ahmed for the spinner's spot. You get the feeling that the selectors will look for any reason to pick Ahmed, so it will depend on how they bowl in the Shield this week. Hopefully Lyon takes a few wickets.

Martyn, Symonds, Hodge? Yeah, absolute rubbish.
martyn was sadly out of form when selected averaged in the mid 30s in the 05 ashes and retired shortly afterwards.
Symonds was an adequate batsman and an even more average bowler
Hodge didn't play the 05 ashes, averaged 40 against WI and got his big double against RSA
talking hughes, smith, white all played out of position and too early.
Katich and clarke were played before they were ready and performed rubbish in their first incarnation in the test side too.
and the string of rubbish spinners that were given an opportunity...

i think its 8 years too late for david hussey, he's still a good batsman but on a declining path.
Its a shame because the two hussey's would have been better than a lot of the rubbish in the middle order we've had for the last 10 years.

I hold a similar view to those in the know, David Hussey tends to be a bit to legside of the ball (doesn't get in behind it) early and prone to nicking in red ball cricket against high quality fast bowling.

Unfortunately for him - it's a theory that he never got the chance to disprove unlike many others.

Marto won us a match in South Africa upon his reselection after winning us a series in India in 2004.

In regards to Brisbane if Watson can't play then Bailey probably can't.

His Launceston mate Doolan would be in the box seat then.

Would have to be:
Rogers
Warner
Watson/ Hughes (only if Watson is unfit, selectors will probably pick him anyway)
Clarke
Smith- actually starting to turn into a fan of his
Bailey -seriously cannot see him missing out
Haddin -Another season or two left
Johnson -don't really agree with this
Harris- gun
Siddle- mr consistency, also enjoys the first test of ashes series
Lyon- well, we need a spinner
12th- Hughes 13th- Faulkner

Khawaja shouldn't get near the squad, I will be fuming if he does although I am contradicting myself by having Hughes on standby :p. Same goes with Ahmed, I have the unpopular view that he should be ineligible, but also I don't want him in there as I see Lyon as a better test option anyway. A decent Australia A performance from Doolan or Klinger may see them sneak into the squad but can't see them playing unless Watson misses out. Last home series wasn't it a 15 man squad? In that case probably Hazlewood ( vastly overrated) and Doolan would be added to the original 13

You would think that Hughes would get the nod at 3 if Watson is out, hard to see them debuting 2 batsmen in the top 6 for the Ashes.

I'm expecting a Henriques or Faulkner for the fifth bowling option.

If McDonald were fit I'd be happy about this.

McDonald is capable of batting in the top 6. Faulkner is not.

As bowlers both are only good enough to keep an end up without getting spanked.
Faulkner took 6 wickets in his match in the Ashes. He is more of a genuine allrounder then McDonald.

only way you consider Faulkner at 6 is if you have a keeper as good as the sangakkara's or the De Villiers who can double as legit top 6 bats.

Would be a gutsy, gutsy move to play jimmy as anything more than a 3rd seamer/no8 bat

Yes he did. Still isn't good enough to be selected as a bowler and isn't good enough to bat in the top 6.

If Watson goes we want someone who can bat in the top 6 and can do the Watson role with the ball.
A fit McDonald is the obvious candidate.

I've never seen Alex Doolan bat, what's he like? On paper he looks to be a good player.

Doesn't look good but just keeps making runs.

If theoretically Doolan plays, they won't have 2 debutants in the first test. Who bats at 6? Either Wade or White IMO, those two are the middle-order bats in good form since the summer started. Leaning towards White so Wade can continue to develop his captaincy skills for the vics

I'd expect Henriques or Faulkner over Wade or White to be honest.

I'd pick White over both personally but that is what I would expect.

Ugh, yeah, they'll bat Baddin at 6 and play Faulkner. Would prefer Faulks and White to Faulks and Johnson but the selectors will disagree

As they should;)

You know my feelings on fast bowlers under 135 km

Bloody West Aussies... Would prefer a bloke who is just as likely to go for 0/150 as he is 5/45 off 20 overs to a bloke who is more likely to get 3/52 off his 20

Faulkner is not going to get anywhere near 3/52.

He's a marginally better bowler than Watson. If we select Faulkner as a bowler it means we will depend on Harris and Siddle to take 15 wickets between them.
