St Kilda claimed that taking them in the draft and realising that kids are actually good changed their plan to keep topping with older B graders. If Lethers and Gags had been let go we would've been on a very dead-end trajectory. Luck or design, if we hadn't found those guys which was probably a bit of luck and a bit of management, it has set us up for a genuine run. If we'd kept perpetually playing the Lehers play book over and over we'd be sitting outside the 8 hoping that some free agent will come for $1.2 million a season and save us.

Finding those kids probably saved us from Ratts, Lethlean and Rath running the footy department still. I don't think people realise how close to heading down a bad road we got.
lol Revisionism at its best. One simple question. If the 5 recruits from 2019 are no good, why would all four still playing be in the starting 22 (if all fit) selected by Lyon, 5 years later? If they are soooooo bad why hasn't Lyon delisted them and got in better players.

Your argument is fatuous. The hills you die are are hilarous. How is Dunstan going at his new club? Set the place on fire before his knee did he?

Guess you haven't read the review then.

I was a hater from day one. What club employs a disgraced office boy to do a list review. Honestly the Finnis era was like years sitting at home smoking bongs talking about how you were going to start a band and become famous....while forgetting which day to put in your dole cheque in.

Disgraced office boys who are highly regarded administrators are still highly regarded administrators. We didn’t exactly have the upper echelon of AFL off field talent lining up to join us.

You also love to ignore the position the club was in when Finnis took over.

And the most recent list review was undertaken by Glenn Luff & David Noble.

Bongs indeed.

I won't bother going back to repost all the times you pumped his tyres then...

I fail to see why Gallagher gets so shitcanned here.
2019 5 recruits, four of who are still seniors players, also drafted Ronnie who is a seniors player
2020 Crouch and Higgins. Senior players. Alison a mistep. Wood as a DFA been great
2021 Naz, Windy, Mitch, Coops mid season.
2022, Pou, Van Es Hotton, Keeler.

What is so bad about this considering the lack.of resources he had.

I'd suspect, given his skill set , that he was more involved in contracts , and salary cap than the actual talent targeted.

2019.
We set ourselves up to be bent over on the Hill trade. Unless the Coach was screaming to get him at any price, we should have walked away.
I liked the Howard trade, whatever his flaws, players like him are hard to come by, and unlike Hill, he was a value trade.
2020.
I doubt if Gallagher chose Allison. There were some decent draft picks after him too, maybe Toce was freaking out during lockdown.

2021. Naz a great choice. We had 2 NGA players who were "ok". We'd have been nuts not to pick them both. No drafting talent needed.

I think Toce has at least done a decent job at drafting, and Gallagher has kept the cap well contained.

Does anyone here really think that it works like " Oh hi Boss, i was bored this morning so i signed Allison up for a couple more years"?
Pretty sure they would have meetings and crap to discuss that sort of thing.

I think someone else was right about Lethlean being a change manager. He likes to be a mover and shaker , and i don't think he's that bad at it, but Ross wants to be the man doing the shaking.

Amongst other things he was a director of Champion data, and he set up the AFL women's program.

I guess by office boy , Gringo meant he wasn't "hands on" at footy.
( But he was hands on in the office ).

Personally Im not concerned at all by Lethlean departing. Obviously he was not performing to the required standard so Bassett and the board made the decision to move him on. It was done quickly and efficiently and from the outside it seems without any bad blood. Im also certain the club will or have identified the person they want to replace him.

In the past the club would have signed him to a 5 year contract and had to pay that out. We are now a much more professionally run outift and I have total faith in Andrew Bassett - he knows how to put the best people in key positions.

I thought Gallagher had a perfect skillset for the position.

A degree in Finance, high level experience in the finance world, played 40 games for Adelaide, played 200+ games for Norwood, captained the team for 3 years, won 2 B & F's and premiership.

Not sure what more you'd be looking for in a List Manager.

i do give Gallaher credit for culling certain non-performing over paid players. But to give him credit as being a good drafter of talent is a stretch.

The club had a TPP of over $13 million, if you can't attract a few decent players to leave their old clubs with a substantial pay rise then you are certainly setting the bar very low.

Happy that he is gone, plus happy that Lethers is too.

Another way of looking at the performance of the football department. Is to ask yourself did they leave the club in a better position than when they took over?

Finnis. YES. Got us out of Seaford and oversaw development of DFC made us relevant in our spiritual home again.

Gallagher and Rath helped get rid of overpaid GOP and rebalance the salary profiles.

Toce...we have a better list than before he came with some real talent coming through rather than recycled ovrtrated rejects from other clubs.

Lethlean appointed one coach that got us playing 2 finals and RtB another final. Oversaw the moving on of some dead wood, potentially hiring slightly better dead wood...Hannas and Hill were not his best decisions but at least he gave it a shot.

However, right now the Playing List and club is as a whole probably at the best for at least 10 years. He has had a fair hand in that. Also, reckon his time had come, got us to a point where we are well structured, and all departments running satisfactorily thus allowing better more elite decision makers to take control.

Sorry i disagree with your view.

12 months ago the AFL world rightfully questioned if we have a good enough list or if we needed to rebuild after BACK TO BACK FAILED SEASONS.

The only reason people are optimistic, Is because of the work of one man.

The above all got sacked because of the poor work they did prior to Ross's arrival or the adequate job they did which led to them being replaced by better (Toce into Dalrymple)

The fact that he had no experience in that role, surely you don't give an inexperienced person the reigns to a 13 million TPP.

If he started as assistant and learnt the ropes, then grew into the role then fair enough.

Nearly everyone in the media said that it was an extremely left of field appointment.

Those who lack the plumbs will always believe the sky's falling.

About your most articulate post on this subject. Even though it is pretty stupid at least it is not non sensical like most of your points.
You are like a Brexiteer when shown evidence that it is a completely different to what you said it would be just denies and continues on with deluded talking points. a bit pitiful really.

Like you Trumpists who even when your messiah is given the arse and sacked you think he's god.

They are GOPs that were recruited to play in finals. They thought we were close to flag and did it arse about. Your hero worshipping sacked spuds is legendary. I wanted to keep Dunstan to save the midfield from losing depth after he had a good half a season. Ratts got himself sacked when he had no depth so ****ed that up.

Funny how the club has implemented nearly everything I asked for and I'm the idiot. You would have been great running around as a yes man for Robespierre or the Stasi. Unquestioning idiots are handy at times.

Just had a look back through all of my Lethers posts. Fair to say I said about 5 good things about him and 45 thousand bagging him. I may have been close to getting a visit from the Fixated Persons Unit.

It shows how out of our depth we were. Lyon set up a proper solid environment to work off. His rebuilding of the footy department is exactly what was missing. We lost Lyon who was across everything last time and the entire footy department fell apart and then we tried to stop investing money in it. That's why he's exactly the right appointment. Us getting a new younger coach wouldn't have worked because the structure wasn't there.
