Will be exciting next year with Reiwoldt, Vickery and Mcbean as the 3 tall forwards. He's kicked over 30 goals now in his first year from about 17 games? He's almost 95kg already. He'll probably be about 100kg next year. Not bad for a skinny kid

Only 13 games. :thumbsu: And 36 goals. You're underselling him. :D

Can someone who has seen him play a number of games tell me how his marking is? Does he take contested marks? This is the key of a big man and can very rarely be taught to a good level. You can be taught to be an average contested mark but not to good level. At senior level, someone of his height will need to be able to clunk a mark to be of service.

I haven't seen him play so would have no idea what he's marking is like.

Would be great to hear from some astute judges on here what he is like @ marking.

Cheers

He's one out of the box. Forget that he's 202cm, and therefore he needs to do X. He plays more like Nahas (in the best possible way) than a power forward. I have only seen the televised games, and highlights, but he probably gets 50% of his goals from being quick and nimble, and very, VERY good at crumbing packs, and snapping goals from pretty much anywhere. The rest are more from good lead/mark type play. Can't really recall him taking too many big "crash the pack" type contested marks.

The problem for opposition is that anyone near his height is going to struggle to go with him on the lead and once the ball hits the deck. Anyone quick and nimble enough to go with him with the ball on the ground won't get anywhere near him to outmark him. He's going to be a beauty.

Thanks for that. See here the thing though, at senior level a 202cm bloke who relies on just his running and athleticism will struggle. Most blokes at that level who are not ruckmen are very mobile. He needs to be able to take a mark to make it at AFL level for a bloke his height.

There's a lot of enthusiasm about this bloke but I'm just not sold on it...for now.

MCBEAN...???..who is this mcbean guy everyone raves on about ...is there any footage of him .? vie never seen him play but he has such a Cult following I want to see him line up this week..I wonder how many extra fans would flock to the MCG.if he was given a game,,
What , never heard of richmondfc.com.au?

Probably because you havnt seen him play i would say, He will certainly be a player that fits into our team and by the time he is 21 will become a permanent fixture in our line up

Most blokes...

There's your first problem. McBean ain't just "most blokes" ;)

In all seriousness, I was skeptical before I saw him. He plays like a classy small forward, with the added BONUS of him being 202cm, and good on the lead. I mean, what a nightmare... who do you play on him? Steve Morris, or Alex Rance? Either way he'll towel them up!

Our forward setup next year (I hope)

HF: Knights, Elton, Martin
F: S. Edwards, Riewoldt, McBean

No arguments here.
I'd love o'hanlon to get a crack next year too. Hope knights mentors him all summer and those two fight it out for that spot.

Absolutely. I believe O'Hanlon is almost a carbon copy of Knights, with more pace.

I'm not giving up on Griffiths just yet - Big Pre Season required and some more experience

We have enough talls on our list to afford to give guys like Astbury & Griffiths another year

Same. People have to remember he has been had a horrible run with injuries and guys like Hawkins, and Josh Kennedy (WC) not to mention our own Dan Jackson and Matty White have taken their time to cement themselves at AFL level. PLus plenty of other highish picks like Masten, Myers, Richie Douglas, Lachlan Hansen, Armitage, Everitt, Grant and even guys like Rance and Henderson have taken time to become very good footballers while getting a fair bit of game time.

Kennedy and Hawkins weren't struggling to touch the ball more than twice at VFL level though. They weren't star AFL players but they were still getting a game and playing a role. He needs to lift.

Kennedy was at Carlton. He got to West Coast he was completely unfit. Hawkins hasn't had the injury problems that Griff has had... and shhhhhhh you're destroying my point.

Kennedy was only 2 years into his career when he changed clubs. :p

And pretty sure Hawkins had quite a few injuries. I think a club will enquire on Griff and fair chance we will trade him or he will get a 1 year deal to lift his game.

Ok, I was on the fence with this fella in regards to playing seniors this year, but after his Coburg highlights, I would really like to see him get a run against GWS.

The one hand pickup right at the start and then the pick up and left foot snap from the boundary (3:02) were all class.

I can honestly see a forward line with Jack playing 40m out and moving more up the ground and McBean within 20m of the goal square. You would assume he'd take the 3rd tall defender from most sides, and being able to isolate a 202cm kid with great leading patterns, can kick on either slipper and so great below he's knees would be massively hard to handle in my opinion.

Play the Kid this week and stretch the blues defence with
Riewoldt,Vickery,Mcbean & McGuane

Not as top heavy considering McBean plays like a 180 cm crumbing forward. He is tall enough to warrant a key position defender, but quick enough to render them useless. Going to be a very scary matchup for opposition defenders in the next few years. Think he could be a quicker, more athletic version of Tippett.
