Lillee, McGrath..... Cummins ?

Below is a table of Aussies who have 150+ test wickets and who have played since the end of WSC.

Obviously Davidson, Lindwall & Miller were guns yesteryear.

Most of us would sit comfortably if picking our best XI we've seen and it included Cummins, McGrath, Lillee & Warne.

It's still amazing how underrated Hazlewood and Starc's careers have been too.

If they were all in their prime right now it would be hard not to pick Jeff Thomson. Especially in Australia. Who’s the selector that not going to pick the fastest bowler ever etc.

It's a bit revealing how underrated Lyon is, given that there's only two other spinners on that list, both of them are leggies, and Australia is where offies go to die...

While I understand the allure, it'd be exceedingly difficult to go past McGrath and Cummins given their strike rates.

Was thinking about this yesterday - which other quick would I have in an all time XI next to McGrath and Lillee. It's Cummins. Genuine match winner with both bat and ball.

Never keen on comparisons, to have that much success at elite level demands its own standing. For mine, I doubt I will ever see a greater quick bowler than Dennis Lillee, there is so much more to his story than mere statistics. His performance in the Centenary Test when he should not have been playing transcended greatness.

I never got to see DK live (give or take a couple of the Lilac Hill festival games) but I've been lucky enough to chat a couple of times at functions and have worked and played with people who played with him at state and grade level.

I think what Cummins has in common with him is the ability to take the entire side on his shoulders and just haul them out of the proverbial abyss. The miracle balls and lighting-in-a-bottle spells that turn games and that sort of thing. Warne and McGrath had it, Johnson produced it sporadically, but it's pretty rare overall and a major point of difference between winning and losing for this side.

yeah an alltime XI certainly of the last 50 years almost picks itself.

lillee, mcgrath, cummins are leading the bowling attack
simarlarly with g.chappell, ponting, smith all vying since best bat since bradman and walk up starts
warne and gilchrist fill the spinner and keepers spots
leaving 2 opening positions and a middle order bat to fill.

So grateful there is footage of him bowling against the world 11 before he injured his back.

Doesn't feel right putting anyone above him after seeing that footage.

I feel better putting Cummins ahead of McGrath.

When he took that 8/29 against the World XI in Perth, not many people realize he wasn't well. World XI were bowled out for 59 and had to follow on. Lillee took a quick wicket giving him 9 for the day, then he was sent home to bed. Came back the next day. took another 3 wickets and cleaned them up.

Prior to Lillee's back injury, pity we never had accurate speed equipment because I would bet he was 150kpm+.

Hey mate this post - made me create another thread on best team since the 70s. I didn’t want to derail this thread but loved the thought behind it.

And I didn’t realise how bang on our thinking was

Thank you

What do we make of his superior strike rate to all the others? Second is starc? is this a reflection of the bigbash t20 stuff that has become more prominent and perhaps made it easier to take wickets? if so how does that change the context of cummins performance ?

Lee's ability to change an innings sways me that way. Cummins accuracy and relentlessness is criminally under estimated but we aren't allowed to see it as much with Starc being the 'enforcer' of the bowlers
