Lions fume as Micheal joins Bombers.

Brisbane chief executive Michael Bowers has vowed to take "any action possible" to prevent Mal Michael from becoming an Essendon player after the former Lions' full-back joined the Bombers on Friday just six weeks after announcing his AFL retirement.

Bowers told Sportal that Michael's actions had the potential to create "absolute anarchy."

"I think everyone in the AFL system should be concerned about this," he said.

"It has the potential to totally destroy the fabric of the AFL draft system."

In a major shock the Bombers announced on Friday they would claim Michael at selection two in the December 12 NAB AFL pre-season draft - leaving the Kangaroos with the first live pick after Carlton had previously announced it would select ex St Kilda ruckman Cain Ackland with the first pick.

Michael, who is still only 29, has signed a two year contract and will commence training with Essendon in mid-December after previously rejecting the chance to play out the last remaining year on his Brisbane contract in 2007.

He will hold a press conference later this afternoon to speak about his change of heart.

Michael announced his retirement from Brisbane on October 5, following months of speculation, after initially wanting to play on with a reduced training load - a move rejected by Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews.

Amongst the reasons he cited for his "retirement" was a desire to spend more time pursuing other interests in his native Papua New Guinea.

“I’m just ready for the next phase of my life,” Michael said at the time.

"I will definitely miss my teammates and being part of a team organisation but, at the end of the day, it is time to move on."

However just six weeks later and Michael has now committed to playing for Essendon for the next two years after the Lions allowed his contract for 2007 to lapse on the basis he had retired.

"We believe he has a lot of football still left in him and his move back to Melbourne has caused him to re-think his retirement," Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy said in announcing Michael's signing on Friday.

Sheedy said Michael, a 201 game veteran and a triple premiership player with Brisbane, would be a huge addition for the Bombers.

"We think he can be a very important player for us for at least the next couple of years," Sheedy said.

"He will provide us with some real strength and experience in defence while we continue to develop some of our younger players for key defensive roles."

"Physically he is in very good condition and the time away has freshened him up mentally."

The recruitment of Michael, a proven full-back, could also finally allow Sheedy to play his champion defender Dustin Fletcher in a more attacking role.

However if Brisbane have their way, Michael will never play for Essendon or any other club.

"We only agreed to terminate the remaining year on his contract because he said he wanted to retire," Bowers said.

"We will be saying to the AFL that Mal Michael should be excluded from participating in any draft until (after his original Brisbane contract expires at the end of) 2007 and that they should refuse his re-registration with Essendon or any club."

Bowers said if Michael was allowed to play for Essendon after having walked away from his contract with Brisbane by announcing his retirement then it would set a precedent for any player to do exactly the same thing in future seasons.

I personally agree with what the Lions are doing about this and I hope that this whole Mal micheal thing does not happen your thoughts?.

Maybe the Lions have a point. It makes a farce of things if players can just "retire" before their contract is up, then rejoin another club. Maybe whoever wants to draft Michael should pay the Lions . Did the Lions pay out the remainder of his contract when he retired ?

Good point....:thumbsu:

Looks like there's a few sooks down lions way.

I never heard them once complain about the extra salary cap space that got them the 3 premierships.
Yeah because thats the reason why we kicked your ass in 2001 premiership Bulid a bridge and get the ******** over it will you.

You have no idea. If this is allowed to happen, what is stopping Bryce Gibbs to "retire" at the end of 2007 and then sign a contract with the Crows

oh dear, are you braindead? Maybe because Carlton wouldn't release him from his contract?? Fairly bleedingly obvious I would have thought:rolleyes:

Look I know you're team is toilet at the moment and anything the crazy old man Sheedy can get you'd gladly take to bolster your crap list, but surely even you can see this is cheating the system.

Crap Situation. But thats Sheedy for you. He is a charlaton. And mal Micheal , you are no better. Karma 2fold. If he is allowed to do this, it destroys our drafting sstem as we know it. He will be barred from playing. Has to be. if not Wollow in the crap you have spewed Sheedy and Micheal

A few simple words would stop it - any lawyer worth more than $1 an hour would be able to help you out.

perhaps it's you that has no idea.

Did the Lions pay out the remainder of his contract when he retired ?

No, they haven't paid him out, nor are they paying him in 2007.

Agree cannot be a free agent until 08

Restraint of trade.

The draft stops that. Unless Adelaide have the first pick in the PSD, it can't happen.

What a shame the clubs greatest ever full back will be booed big time whenever he plays against brisbane. First acker, now michael. Safe to say leigh mathews isnt totally innocent in losing these two greats.

It is cheating the system if we contacted him before October 31. I we contacted him after that date about him being available to play then we havnt done anything wrong.

I touch dramatic, do you really see the club realeasing him? There is a precedent here contract wise in the NRL. Parramatta released Jamie Lion from his contract early but on the proviso he could play with certain other NRL clubs (ie the ones he wanted to go to) so Jamie had to play one season in the bush and two years in England before he has been able to come back to the NRL (next year) and play.
It is a simple as using the same workplace contracts that are in place in a number of industries. Clubs simply say yes you can retire and we will void your contract if you dont play AFL for x years (be it 1,2,3 or whatever).

Okay. Maybe I'm just taking the high moral ground here. I think it is pretty shabby the way Michael has gone about this, especially with the wonderful career he had with Brisbane. Maybe Brisbane were niave in thinking a great club legend would stab them in the back in such a way. Brisbane would have every right to feel bitter about this.

Yeah, this sounds like extremely bad sh*t the way it's portrayed in the media.

It's one thing to retire from football, but it's quite another to "retire" just to get out of a contract.

Having said that, does it seem strange to you that Brisbane didn't try to keep hold of Michael? When he retired, it looked very much like Brisbane sat Michael down and said "Retire or we'll de-list you", and now that he's being picked up by another club, they're playing the "poor us" card.

Unfortunaely for Michael, I think unless he's got proof that they intended to de-list him, he won't be playing for the Bombers next year.
