I may have missed some delisted players but my list shows 45 Queenslanders in the league compared to the 50 in 2008. This is surprising given the addition of a new Queensland team that contains 11 Queenslanders itself. So why aren't as many Queenslanders coming through anymore?

Because of increased scouting networks and the evolution of lower level comps in AFL states such as the tac cup, this provides means of identifying talent at a younger age and fostering it.

As a result alot more serviceable players are produced locally

This combined with a go home factor mean a Queenslander is less likely to be picked by an interstate team (from a QLD perspective)

What it also means is that Queenslanders who are picked are more likely to ahead of the players around them in terms of maturity and development.

11 Queensland players were selected in the 2006 draft.
This nearly matched South Australia's total of 12 players in that draft.

So by 2008 there were a lot of Queenslanders in the system based on that spike in numbers.

Interesting to see so many Queenslanders in Collingwood's team now.

There is now a good pathway for young Queenslanders through the academies...such as Brisbane's one below.

http://www.lions.com.au/season/players/academy/hla-what-is

It should pick up again when the talent comes through. Mark Browning is doing a great job up there.

Shaun Hampson is now at Richmond.

I don't think that the introduction of Gold Coast will have an impact on QLD's getting drafted for at least a generation. I've lived on the Coast most of my life, and whilst there has always been a strong VFL/AFL presence here, there hasn't been a coordinated, well funded push to encourage kids to take up the sport from an early age. That all changed with the introduction of the SUNS. They do a lot of great community work, and are constantly touring schools. As they club becomes successful on field, that will again transfer into kids playing the game.

Will be really interesting to see these number in 10 - 15 years.

Add Oxley and McGuane to that list, probably a few more.

the current AFL QLD site is way out of date.

I bet plenty of AFL players were conceived in QLD....does that count? Maybe a State of Conception team.

+ Matt Jones and Joel McDonald from Melbourne.

I have updated the list with Oxley, McGuane and Macdonald added. I didn't add Matt Jones because it would appear he grew up in Victoria and just spent one or two seasons with Labrador. According to my updated list there were 45 QLDers in the AFL in 2013.

would be interesting to see under the new rules which of brisbane and gold coast would hold the rights to all these players.

Well it's actually quite simple to work that out. The Lions' zone includes Brisbane and central Queensland while the Suns' zone includes the Gold Coast and North Queensland. Now we look at how many are drafted from each region.

Brisbane - 24
Gold Coast - 19
North QLD - 2
Central QLD - 0

So pretty similar sort of numbers with the Lions' zone having 24 players and the Suns' with 21. Just shows the strength of the Gold Coast clubs given the city only has about a quarter of the population that Brisbane has.

Would have thought a bit different, Yagmoor , Dixon, Harbrow at least are from Cairns, the high jumper Hall is from Townsville, but i think they are putting their QAFL club down instead of their initial grass roots club.

At any rate 45 or so players is not bad, whether it has a spike with the academys remains to be seen, hopefully it does.

Where exactly do you see it heading, and i wonder what number AFL QLD are hoping and heading for.

Would have thought 60/70 myself, getting close to enough for 2 teams !!!, i think that is not unreasonable.

Didn't realise that L. Keefe and J. White were Queenslanders.

If State of Origin was to ever return to the Aussie rules landscape, Queensland would be able to field a competitive team and we quite rightly deserve our own team instead of a bastardised "Allies", "Dreamteam" or "QLD/NT" hybrid.

B: R. Thompson, D. Merrett, C. Dempsey
HB: J. Harbrow, D. Armitage, B. Whitecross
C: A. Raines, C. Beams, D. Beams
HF: J. White, N. Riewoldt, C. Dixon
F: D. Zorko, K. Tippett, L. McGuane
Foll: B. Hudson, D. Hale, Z. Smith
Int: S. Gilbert, L. Keefe, S. Reid
Sub: R. Bail
Coach: M. Voss

We wouldn't beat Vic, WA or SA but we'd give them a contest. We would beat NSW, ACT and NT easily and be even with Tassie.

I would move that team around a bit, but this team would give Vic, SA and WA a run for its money.

:)

I was under the impression the zone rules take into account where you play your club footy, not necessarily where you were born or grew up. Which is a shame for the Suns academy because anyone serious about their footy up north is likely to move to Brisbane and not the Gold Coast. I think Brisbane will make a lot more use of their academy players over the next few years than the Suns but eventually both will need to make use of their zone.

I don't know the facts but I would have thought junior participation in Queensland would have risen during the Brisbane Lions glory days and I would like to think the Gold Coast Suns will have a similar impact when they starting challenging for premierships. The Gold Coast zone has always been considerably stronger than it should have been and now that a proper team and academy is set up, I can only see it flourishing more. The one thing that will hold GC juniors back is the fact that Southport are now the only local team playing in the NEAFL. Labrador and Broadbeach were kicked out this year.

I think 60 Queensland players in the AFL is achievable.

Yeah I'm pissed about them cutting teams from the northern division.

You could argue for a relegation system especially with Labrador struggling atm, but to straight cut teams is rubbish.

If anything they should have cut thunder, prick's only win because playing them at home in 45c heat ****s up the visitors.

They don't win shit away.

Some Queenslanders have looked pretty good as 16/17 year olds but dropped off a bit in the ranking the following year. Whether that's just bad or or lack of development, who knows.

But the Queenslanders are apparently going to be playing in the tac cup next year. So it will be interesting to see how they go and if it helps them develop more. We've got a couple of promising kids in Hammellman and Dawson coming through.

No you wouldn't. Queensland would get slaughtered. For starters, your best 22 would never be available, so you'd be going down to 26 on the pecking order as a minimum (and probably closer to 30). Even if they did get that side on the park, it's ridiculously tall (and that's not meant as a compliment). Riewoldt, White, Dixon, Tippett, McGuane and Keefe? With Hudson, Hale and Smith possibly taking the 'ruck division' concept a bit too literally?
