I can just see it now, him playing on a big name forward in the finals, tight game, and he loses a contest that a Taylor or Scarlett wouldn't, or does something stupid that a more experienced and sound defender wouldn't and the Cats miss out on the flag again.

I know you Lonergan defenders out there will tell me how much he has improved, and I respect the fact that his game has gone up a level. However, the decision of the Geelong coaching staff to consistently play him on the big and/or the opposition's best forwards (when we have perfectly fit and able Scarlett out there) will wind up costing us on the big stage.

Just an inkling I have, but I think Lonergan should be very thankful he's playing for Geelong and not someone else, because there's been a few games where he's looked very shaky but not been completely exposed because his teammates have dominated.

He just looks so vulnerable in contested situations, and when he's got the ball.

The use of Scarlett in a lesser role since he's been back from injury is exceedingly premature, and our defence of key forwards has not been as impressive this year as in the past couple of years. Nor does it allow Scarlett to play his best footy. Just don't understand why Thompson thinks it's a good idea.

I'd rather Scarlett retire than play this role at this stage of his career, when he could easily have another 2-3 years as one of if not the best defender in the league.

What were you saying after his games against Pies, Saints, Hawks twice, Roos, Port, etc? He is up against a gun who is taller and stronger. Who do you propose would be a better option and why haven't the brains trust put Taylor on him?

i've generally been a fan of him this year, but he's had a couple of bad, critical errors tonight. i think he's worth persisting with as his presence gives us good flexibility in defence, but he could be the one to miss out when the finals come

This thread needs to be immortalised as a reference tool for why one shouldn't start threads during a match.

It's also proof positive that some hav been spoiled by our success and have become soft, to the point where a tantrum is thrown and ridiculous statements made whenever we don't play flawless football.

Ugly.

totally agree, and on that thought, it would be easy to write off Pods away from Geelong, and declare him a home ground player only, but no, I won't go there.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion , even if their opinion is silly. Scarlett retire?
Whether it be Lonergan or someone else Geelong must train others to take on key roles if they have any chance of continuing this era. Do you think Taylor got to his current level by letting play on the weak forward? Even just to cover in game injuries any team must endeavor to be be flexible , in the short term it may make one weaker but thats the price of tempering.

Whether Lonergan is doing this job next year or in three years times will be up to his ability to meet the challenges that have been tasked him. If he fails then other will get there chance.

im not a big fan but dont think he should be dropped, but a lil clarity wouldnt go astray:

pies and port have dangerous tall forwards?

kosi is shell of his former self.

hansen kicked 5.4 or something.

roughy looked really dangerous then played himself out of the match last week.

yep similarly to zac dawson. he'll be fine if he's got taylor and scarlett covering for him but as soon as he's one out, he's in trouble.

Good post - Lonergan's improvement is all fine but he really does have the potential to cost us a big game with skill errors and decision-making that are poor at times... (esp. as he's in the last line of defense FFS)

Honestly what games do you people watch.

Lonners has probably been one out in contests 5 times as often as Scarlett this year. You can claim that he has been playing on average forwards most of the year but to suggest that Scarlett is 'covering for him' is complete shit.

He won't be taking the best forward when it's finals. Scarlo will be cherry ripe to play where he plays best. I think that's the plan.

Lonergan was down, but he has been very good for us this year.

. Right now believe it or not 12/ 13 teams would consider themselves that they a good chance of beating the cats. Hardly the aura required coming into finals.

Are you for real?

Lonners is our third string defensive tall playing on a Key Position forward. The problem is for him is if the rest of the team has a bad night he will be exposed. Which is what happened tonight. Our midfield was well down so his match up was exposed. That's all. When the team is playing well he gets more support. Considering he was playing on guy much taller and stronger he did the best he could. Some of the observations in this thread are based on very little knowledge and too much emotion. Lonners will be back next week and the week after. He is an important part of the structure.
