I can just see it now, him playing on a big name forward in the finals, tight game, and he loses a contest that a Taylor or Scarlett wouldn't, or does something stupid that a more experienced and sound defender wouldn't and the Cats miss out on the flag again.
I know you Lonergan defenders out there will tell me how much he has improved, and I respect the fact that his game has gone up a level. However, the decision of the Geelong coaching staff to consistently play him on the big and/or the opposition's best forwards (when we have perfectly fit and able Scarlett out there) will wind up costing us on the big stage.
Just an inkling I have, but I think Lonergan should be very thankful he's playing for Geelong and not someone else, because there's been a few games where he's looked very shaky but not been completely exposed because his teammates have dominated.
He just looks so vulnerable in contested situations, and when he's got the ball.
The use of Scarlett in a lesser role since he's been back from injury is exceedingly premature, and our defence of key forwards has not been as impressive this year as in the past couple of years. Nor does it allow Scarlett to play his best footy. Just don't understand why Thompson thinks it's a good idea.
I'd rather Scarlett retire than play this role at this stage of his career, when he could easily have another 2-3 years as one of if not the best defender in the league.
