Buckley actually signed a contract with north while he was still playing for port adelaide. this was well outside the rules of the time and buckley had a change of heart and wanted to give the cash back, north refused but he deposited it into their bingo account. The afl also got wind of this and and north was fined for draft tampering.

Buckley then went to brisbane (even though he wasn't eligible) knowing brisbane and Robert walls would trade him to the club of his choice if he still wanted to leave after playing one year.
It doesn't change the fact that he turned down North on the basis that he thought Collingwood had more chance of playing finals.

Andrew Lovett - The 'missing link' of the Saints premiership hopes. Was brought in on big coin and with big hype only to literally **** up and be sacked before ever playing a game.
The courts found him not guilty of all charges. So maybe it was the Saints who ****ed up

Very true.

I found it strange the he and Milne were treated so differently but if you believe the story Milne always denied any wrong doing where as Lovett broke down in front of the playing group and admitted he thought he had done something wrong.

After that they didnt trust him and Lyon wanted him gone so that he wasnt a distraction.

Dont think he wouldve made the difference in 2010 though...

It wasn't just a trade agreement. There was a transfer of cash from Collingwood to Brisbane, as admitted by Robert Walls on Open Mike. Although Collingwood was never punished for this "draft tampering", even though North had been fined. Double standards.

Greg and Dennis told a lot of stories...
I guess you can believe them or not. On all available evidence, Buckley turned down the offer from North as he believed the Pies were a better chance of playing finals.

Dayle Garlett had it all in front of him. Drafted into one of the best clubs in the comp, the club he supported, being mentored by one of the best captains, but he can't kick old habits and is soon booted.

Will be lucky to see out 2015 as a free man, if he's not already incarcerated for the string of crimes he committed in 2014.

We'd just played in 3 GF's in 4 years for 2 flags. So once he'd made his decision to leave Geelong following all the crap he had dealt with there, you can't blame him for wanting to play with us. Plus he did play in a prelim in his first year with us.
Bringing up 2007 is a stretch, he'd been retired for 2 years by then.

You sound a bit bitter using him as an example to push your agenda in this thread.
Not at all bitter. Geelong did exceedingly well out of the deal. Colbert is not a good example of a loser, I concede. Buckley didn't come to mind when I posted!

Mark Coughlan – won the Richmond BnF at 21 and retired about five years after. Probably one of the most unlucky footballers too, hugely talented but constantly injured (including one coming from being in the shower with his girlfriend...) and never even racked up 100 games.

Des Hedland another. High draft pick, won a flag at the Lions, then got exposed for being the seagull he was and did nothing for Freo. Except that one awesome derby when he flogged Selwood.

The real ones are those Eagles players from the mid-2000s. Perth's horrible obsession and love for Eagles footballers (epitomised today by the Sunday Times' front page story being: Priddis having a kid...) built them up so high. The stories of ice addiction, families leaving, living in sharehouses in Midland, mental illnesses, Greylands, and Adam Hunter working (not owning, working) at a Mitre 10 are some serious ****ing falls from grace.

Jade Rawlings was a gun and highly sought after... the bloke just wanted to play with his brother and the hawks/dogs organised the Veale deal and the rest was history. My memory of the news the night of trade deadline was a pretty devastated Jade sitting on the floor contemplating his future.

Someone on here did an analysis of the 'Veale Deal' and found that it could be considered that all clubs involved had ended up losers, with no winners at all....

Not one of my clubs finest moments to be honest....

It seems you share this 'horrible obsession' considering most of your post is about Eagles players.

Cogga would've been captain, such a hard and skilful player. At 21 he was like Joel Selwood.

But apparently he picked up those habits whilst in Melbourne  Biggest drop kick, such a waste of talent.

Bloody hell thinking of that makes me laugh.

"I want out of Brisbane. Collingwood is looking at me and I reckon they're worth going to, if I want to win some premierships. North Melbourne and Geelong have made offers as well, but as if they're going to win anything!"

By the time of Buckley's retirement:

Brisbane: 3 premierships
North Melbourne: 2 premierships
Geelong: 1 premiership

Collingwood: 0 premierships

I dont mind Bucks - but Geelong were certain they had him

They were high on the ladder - Malcolm Blight was coach - and he had played football with Buckleys father Ray at Woodville - they were former team mates !

So Buckley went down to Geelong - had a game of the golf with Blight - Hocking - and the Geelong president

Then Buckley came out and signed with Collingwood - and what Bucks actually said was - " I was allways going to join a big Melbourne Club " - what a backhander for Geelong

Glen Archer - when he had that column in the Sunday Age told an interesting story - he said - he and Wayne Carey were having a drink at a City hotel - and they bumped into Buckley - and they asked Bucks that very question - did he have any regrets not joining North - they said Buckley instantly replied - well if i had of - you probably would would have won 2 more premierships - Carey and Archer couldnt believe what they just heard

Tom Scully's on the right path

This is a bit premature.

Anyway, Nick Stevens.

There are rumours that his professionalism left a bit to be desired in his early days which probably led to the clashes with players and coaching staff which made him seek a trade home after 2003, but he was an elite midfielder for a couple of years with us.

He said he just wanted to go home, and we dealt with a few teams, before being told on the last day of trade week that he'd only go to Collingwood. Collingwood lowballed the shit out of us and we didn't want to trade a gun to fellow contenders, so we let him go into the draft, where he ended up at post-draft sanction Carlton and spent most of the rest of his career getting annihilated and collecting spoons.

We won the flag the year after he left.
