Losers of the "riches to rags" style

You're completely wrong here.

Buckley signed a contract and accepted a payment of $10k from North when he was 19 years old.

The AFL stepped in and forced him to go to Brisbane due to the current days zoning for Darwin players, he never wanted to go there.

Once Buckley got to Brisbane he was no longer obliged to go to North, although he had already accepted their money.

Denis Pagan tells a story about how he went to visit Buckley in his hotel room at the Southbank Sheraton one day and he never got off the bed to address Pagan, instead lying back casually eating an apple having accepted an offer from Collingwood to play there, Pagan claims that his reason for going to Collingwood was "to play finals football and win premierships."

From then on Pagan made a point of bringing this up in every pre-match address against Collingwood and the North players certainly sledged Buckley every time we played them after the 96 flag. Many players have confirmed this version of events.

Greg Miller has also completely contradicted that version of events and said there is a LOT of Mayo on it.

Sure - Pagan might have used it as a motivator. Doesnt make it true.

Makes for a good story and good banter though.

He could have stayed at Brisbane and won 3 flags, or gone to North and won 2 flags. Instead he went to Collingwood and won no flags. :p

Anybody can spin whatever they like on this one but there is one undisputed fact; He signed a contract with North.

History shows it wasn't honoured.

There is no denying that, and I'm not defending him. I think he's one of the biggest flogs to have laced a boot - and was pleased no end they won a flag shortly after he retired.

Fremantle football club during the mid - late 90s.

Trade away for Croad and McPharlin, giving Hawks Hodge, Mitchell, amongst others. Then Hawks get Croad back for a song.

Trade away McLeod for Groom.

Raid Essendon's stables, giving Essendon comp picks, which they use for..... Lucas and Lloyd.
Not sure that's riches to rags. They were hardly "rich" before doing those trades

We'd just played in 3 GF's in 4 years for 2 flags. So once he'd made his decision to leave Geelong following all the crap he had dealt with there, you can't blame him for wanting to play with us. Plus he did play in a prelim in his first year with us.
Bringing up 2007 is a stretch, he'd been retired for 2 years by then.

You sound a bit bitter using him as an example to push your agenda in this thread.
What was this "crap" btw?

Heard a lot rumblings about something dicey happening but have never heard the full story.

Not picking on you, I've freely admit before that St Kilda are my second team and openly barracked for them across all grand finals they've made in my lifetime. I just hope they don't revert to old ways, and I think that by stating they were a glamour during those years is setting a low bar.
"Low bar" or not, there is no arguing with facts. The club captured the attention of the public in the run up to the 1997 GF, and there is absolutely no denying that. It may be brief, but over my lifetime we have swung wildly from rabble to top dog, and never stay in one too long. It's part of why I like the club - they are never boring.

I have never seen anything confirmed and Colbert doesn't talk about it (as far as I know), but the pro-Colbert version is that some (if not all) of the senior players that were overlooked for the vacant captaincy at the start of 1999 did not respect the decision and proceeded to white ant him, Kim Hughes style. What that actually involved, since he didn't captain the club in an AFL game (he was injured for the entire 1999 season and Garry Hocking was the stand-in), is anyone's guess, but considering the circumstances (a 24 year old first time club captain leaving his club to go to the reigning premiers) either something pretty drastic happened and Colbert was well within his rights to leave, or Colbert is a pretty selfish person. It's really one or the other.

Has he?

Greg Miller said:
''I was there. That was at the Sheraton after the Rising Star,'' Miller said this week. ''He met with us but, again, he was very immature, sitting in the room with the people who signed him. I remember that day.''

''There is a long history there,'' Miller said. ''He signed with us in '91, a week after he played his first senior practice match in central Australia in Alice Springs with Port Adelaide.''

''There was an ongoing angst by our players against him because he said to us when he reneged under contract that he wanted to play finals during the '90s, when we were playing finals and Collingwood wasn't, the boys kept reminding him.

Wow, what a complete contradiction.

At the end of the day got to prove himself on the biggest stage, not much else he could do.

I'm not surprised by the hate of buckley by the north boys, Greg miller admitted he told made up stories before each game to fire up the players

Theres hate for Buckley from everywehre because he appears to be an arrogant flog.
Whether he is or not I dont know, but he sure oozes ********ishness IMO

To be fair, Port at the time were as bad as Melbourne.
To be fair, Chaplin had already played in the 2007 finals series, and been on the list since 2003, experiencing the club making finals and winning a premiership, for a club with a not so good recent record.

It was a ridiculous statement.

As bad as Matt Thomas "more fans at Richmond training than Port matches", then we become the 2nd or 3rd highest average attendence.

Past experiences and wins don't matter in the present. At the time of those comments, those players had a point. Not one person predicted the turn around that Port has had in the time that followed. Even Port fans would have struggled to believe that, if you told them at the end of 2012 that they would be a kick away from a GF in 2014.

It looks stupid now. But rags to riches story....Bit much.

It matters because neither player had what it takes to help turn it around with hard work and hard football, and jumped ship to a big Victorian club and immediately started shooting their mouth off with smart arse comments while expecting to ride the coat tails of the Richmond team to that success.

For as long as they clog your list I wish nothing but pain for Richmond, It's nothing against the club, but several persons within the club.

No leadership at the club at the time... Offers from a club that paid a bit more and looked to be doing a bit better. Do the math.

He was in the ****ing leadership group... He was captain on that fateful day we lost to the Gold Coast...
People leave clubs often, but do it with a bit of class. No Port person has any ill will to Danyle Pearce for leaving. Chaplin is a different kettle of fish. I hope his career ends up with a Nathan Buckley level of irony, but without the playing ability.

Which is true but there were other players in the saga who weren't going to let him go to North. Collingwood got wind of the deal, knew that it was against AFL rules and threatened to expose it. Noel Gordon from the Bears also threw a spanner in the works because he wasn't happy with what North had to offer. Andrew Ireland was happy to deal with North but Gordon had other ideas.

Carlton also put a massive offer on the table before and after he decided to play for Collingwood. Blight didn't take no for answer until after it could become official that he had signed. Grubby Allan told Buckley to meet with other clubs to throw the AFL off the scent of the predetermined deal. The last meeting with North was a waste of time because he didn't want to be there but other more 'mature ' individuals were playing funny buggers with system.

There's quite a bit to deal with for a bloke in his early 20's. Collingwood had come off a flag, a finals series in 92 and in a final, would get within a goal of the eventual premiers in his first year. What happened in terms of recruiting etc in the next 5 years is hardly his fault. He had every excuse to leave for Port in 97 but stayed.

He was no angel in the process but he's not the only one who will pay (no premierships and public perception in his case) for decisions made as a naive 21 year old. There are a few contributors in this saga who are playing innocent.

Reading the Herald Sun today made me realize what an absolute loser James Hird is. From being one of the most admired modern day players / AFL figures m he has single handedly destroyed any skerrick of credibility he may have had to become the No.1 despised individual in the AFL. Bomber supporters won't see it that way, but that's my opinion.

James loves Joan Armatrading, .....................Me, Myself, I.

Jarrad Molloy getting traded to Collingwood before the threepeat.
Fair call, but as vice captain he only broke into the Pies 2002 side last minute and couldn't even get a look in in the pathetic side we fielded in 2003, being behind plodders like Kinnear, Cole, Walker, etc for a call up.
