Losers of the "riches to rags" style

Interesting? Hawthorn sacked the guy forcing him to bide his time in the bush. Funny way to show one of the all time greatest Australian Rules footballers that (a) you want him and (b) respect his talent.

What is really interesting is that Hawthorn realised it had stuffed up big time and made an all-out effort in 1987 to get him back at Glenferrie Road. Had the Hawks been successful, Ablett may have played in 3 premierships.

Equally interesting is the fact that Hawthorn missed out on getting GAJ under the father-son rule.

Hawthorn DID get him back at the end of 87. Signed contract and all.

For some reason it never eventuated. I'm sure someone will know why.

I dont mind Bucks - but Geelong were certain they had him

They were high on the ladder - Malcolm Blight was coach - and he had played football with Buckleys father Ray at Woodville - they were former team mates !

So Buckley went down to Geelong - had a game of the golf with Blight - Hocking - and the Geelong president

Then Buckley came out and signed with Collingwood - and what Bucks actually said was - " I was allways going to join a big Melbourne Club " - what a backhander for Geelong

Glen Archer - when he had that column in the Sunday Age told an interesting story - he said - he and Wayne Carey were having a drink at a City hotel - and they bumped into Buckley - and they asked Bucks that very question - did he have any regrets not joining North - they said Buckley instantly replied - well if i had of - you probably would would have won 2 more premierships - Carey and Archer couldnt believe what they just heard

Great story you should see if you can do a small cartoon piece in the Sun each Sunday.

Ablett reneged

Fremantle football club during the mid - late 90s.

Trade away for Croad and McPharlin, giving Hawks Hodge, Mitchell, amongst others. Then Hawks get Croad back for a song.

Trade away McLeod for Groom.

Raid Essendon's stables, giving Essendon comp picks, which they use for..... Lucas and Lloyd.

Get your facts straight.
Hawthorn didn't get rid of him, he couldn't adjust to city life!

In the end it was to his detriment!

Also one that could have been a member of three premierships!
Well... Without trading McPharlin, we don't get Hodge and potentially not Mitchell. I don't think we win one of those premierships without those two.

So that's more sliding doors - it's a really interesting thought process to wonder what happens if Freo have pick 1, and pick either Judd or Hodge during that draft, with Hawthorn getting neither.

Another interesting thing with the Ablett Snr scenario - imagine if in this current era hawks had GAJ on father son. Scary.

That's probably the greatest consequence. The Hawks mid 80's - early 90's did not need Ablett Senior.

Our playing list would be completely different if we had GAJ and his salary
And he still most likely would've left for the Gold Coast

Ablett is not really a "Sean Dundas" riches to rags type. He wasn't lured away from Hawthorn with promises by Geelong that were never fulfilled, and he was given every opportunity at Geelong. Still, it is a good story.

Buckley doesn't belong in this thread (unless he's blown all his money like Fevola). He played another 260 games, 5 finals series and 2 grand finals. Brisbane didn't start the threepeat until eight years and dozens of players after he left.

No he belongs only because of what he came out and said as justification for leaving Brisbane. No other reason. Nobody disputes he was good for Collingwood

But he also turned down an offer from North that would have seen him play in 2 premierships over the next 5 years.

Surely Geelong arn't that stupid that they would enter negotiations with another club and pay $60,000 for a player who had been sacked.
We are talking about Gary Ablett. $60K was a bargain. But, I don't believe what you say. He was sacked. Are you suggesting he was on loan to Myrtleford?

North Melbourne, 1921. A VFA powerhouse with three flags and two runners-up over the past decade, North thought they'd struck on a clever plan to swallow Essendon whole, as they had with West Melbourne, and enter the VFL at the same time. Unfortunately for North, just after they'd pre-emptively disbanded, the VFA launched legal action and scuttled the takeover. North were left to cannibalise Essendon Association instead and didn't win another cup for 50 years, while the bulk of North's disbanded list, barred from re-joining the VFA, stayed at Essendon and won back to back flags. And now, nearly a century down the track, we have North supporters still obsessed with an invented story that Essendon somehow screwed them, as an excuse for a long history of mediocrity.

It was actually Essendon who suggested the merger....
