In 2010, McCartney was voted the AFL's assistant coach of the year by the AFL Coaches' Association while at Geelong. He moved to Essendon before joining the Dogs in 2012. Everyone in the industry knows what McCartney did for the Dogs, (it's all good news) McCartney is a great development coach and the Dogs are reaping the benefits of it now. Beveridge has the weight of every Bulldogs supporter on his shoulders now as they wait expectantly for that elusive flag. He has been hand delivered a super team, something really out of the ordinary would have to happen for them to fail from here. It's 2016 or 2017 for a flag, anything less and Beveridge will have some explaining to do!
I agree that McCartney is a great development coach, but in no way can you describe a side previously languishing around the bottom 6 a 'super team'. While the talent we have had for a while is evident, we not have the depth yet of any squad like Hawthorn, Fremantle or Sydney. McCartney is a terrific assistant coach, but in no way fit for the top job. In the time we spent under him we did not move forward at all, and player development doesn't come from the guidance of the coach, it comes from the people that were chosen for that very role - development coaches and recruiters. To argue that Bevo isn't a terrific coach is just ignoring his achievements at all levels of coaching. The team Bevo was given wasn't the fruits of time under McCartney, it was the fruits of Simon Dalrymple. Beveridge has managed to do what a great coach does, with a young and growing team. We still have one of the youngest lists in the AFL and work to do.

You're getting Higgins confused - he didn't have anything to do with the Tom Boyd trade?
Higgins was offered a better contract at North compared to what he was at the Dogs, unlike Jones and Tutt. And he was a free agent, different scenario.

Wow. You really have rocks in your head.
There's no doubt he's a great development coach - as proven by our recruiting and development under his tenure as coach. But at the same timefunny how those "industry" voices backing him have disappeared after Bev has come on. We're not reaping the benefits of what McCartney did, we're recovering after what he did made it suffer. Also, what's to say that these industry voices are right? He got the job after referrals from the industry, but who says they knew what they were talking about and not just sticking up for a mate? I've heard from others in the industry (not his mates) who said he was a great networker and great talker and that's why he got the job. Not because he could prove that he had a great tactical mind, which has proven the case...

And in any case none of what you posted directly rebuts the points that I made of him being a terrible tactical coach and his tactical ethos of contested ball being poor - the whole premise of my original reply to your post. The fact that Bev has been able to turn around this team in one off-season not only says a lot about Bev's great tactical mind, but it also says a lot about McCartney's poor tactical mind.

From what I'm hearing from inside the club, McCartney was the sort of coach who said 'You need to work harder on this aspect of the game, you aren't doing enough, we need more of this...' His end of season reviews bugged the shit out of a few players. That might not have been a bad thing necessarily, but if you're a poor communicator and you annoy your players, it spells trouble.

On the other hand, Beveridge says 'This aspect of your game is great. Let's play to your strengths. You are terrific at (x). We drafted you for (x). Let's take advantage of it.'

And if you don't perform he doesn't tell you how shit you are. He just sends you to the VFL and makes you work harder. If you work hard you play in the firsts. Bit of Ross Lyon tough love.

McCartney was great at contested footy but just being hard around the contest is limiting and awful to watch.

We're still hard around the ball but our zone defense & rebound was good from the start of the season. In the latter half we're getting our forward structure sorted out.

I love Bev very much.

Lol McCartney developed sfa for the dogs. Our defensive structure was non existent, we had no game plan moving the ball forward and so many of our players were restricted in the way that they were allowed to play(Picken, Wallis, JJ) Robert Murphy was playing as a lock down small defender. Higgins, killing it at North as a natural HFF was playing as a defender for some reason while we couldn't kick a score

Every player from our forward line against Port apart from C.Daniel was on the list last season. Yet we routinely struggled to kick 10 goals a game

Bev has developed more in half a year than McCartney did in 3 as seen with the massive improvements of Wood, Johannison, Wallis, Hunter, Grant, Redpath, Roberts, Stevens, M.Boyd and so on.

Only thing Macca developed was a toxic culture that almost lead to a mass walkout of our list

Think he's doing a great job as coach. But as it's been mentioned dogs fans shouldn't forget the hard work that McCartney put it getting the club to where they are, their inside game and attack were his trademarks and it has been the run gun and spread that is now in place that has complimented that well.

Geelong supporters really need to calm down have a Beverage and get over the fact that their teams influence on how the game is now played has been usurped by that of Clarkson and Hawthorn. Its pretty obvious to me which brand of football has had the greater influence on our development and I'll give you a hint, its not the one that had us playing some of the least attractive football since Paul Roos and Ross Lyon took up coaching, leaving us stagnating to a point of player revolt.

Define "attack" please.

Well your lot might be 5 years away. But I guess that's the point....

After last 2 weeks our teams couldnt look more different.
Saints:
Pros: Tough, contested ball kings
Cons. Small, slow, unskilled

Dogs look awesome. Bloody awesome.

McCartins better than boyd though LOL the only win we have. And even then thats obviously just started.

My god redpath, campbell, Hamling??? WTF??? Absolute nobodies turning into stars in 2015.

Im n the doggies dont worry. Hawks v Dogs GF WOULD BE AWESOME.

Really want to see dogs smash tigers or cats in a final at least.
Deadset the dogs have a flag this year or next 3.

To be fair mccarteney wouldve done some if this. He set up these boys up to be hard and very fit. However his style had them mentally fatugued and hating the coach. Him!!. Lol along comes bevo the most likable coach youd want to play for and boom you have a recipe for awesomeness.

How has bevo been hand delivered a super team ? He came into the club when it was in disarray, traded out a Brownlow medallist. A classy flanker In Higgins. Our best player AND captain demanded a trade, Gia retired, and pre season round 1. Our best player on the list Libba does his knee. . He was left with blokes like Picken and Matthew Boyd who looked destined for mid year retirement but as somehow injected belief and a sense of freedom not only into those two but the playing group as a whole. He's rejuvenated the entire club, and the boys are now actually enjoying their footy.
Football wasn't fun for the playing group 12 months ago. We are so lucky to have this bloke in charge, and he's done so much more in 9 months than what he's getting credit for.

They should erect a statue of Brendon McCartney at Whitten Oval when they win the flag in 2016 or 2017, nothing is surer than a Dogs flag within the next 2- 3 years! McCartney will not get his due, but that's football.

Macca is a good development coach but not a head coach. The main thing we can thank Macca for is underachieving enough to allow us to get a low enough pick to get the Bont.

I think he is comfortably coach of the year. Funnily enough I think he has based their game on defence... Which is what McCartney was trying to do. I'm not sure what the stats say but it seems like a lot of the dogs scores come from turnovers. They seem to have adopted an 'outside in' defensive strategy (similar to some defensive styles you see in soccer) where the nearest defenders immediately swarm to the ball carrier, and the defenders outside them move in to cover.... And so on. It is designed perfectly to break down teams who handball and run. Hence they were able to destroy us and Port for example.
Not sure it is as effective against teams who use it frequently, and well, by foot. Eg Hawthorn. I wonder how long it will take for teams to change their offensive style so they don't get destroyed by 'Bevo's ....... (Anyone got a good noun?)

This makes far too much sense amidst the sea of black and white footy opinions

It's crazy, isn't it? Start of the year all we hear is how much we lost and how bad we'll be, now that it turns out we're pretty damn good the guy who turned it around apparently got "handed a super team". Mind boggling.
