Luke Edwards Father/Son Discussion

Not sure if it was mentioned anywhere but in Ogilves road to the draft podcast interview he pretty much straight out said we only listed Edwards and jarman because they were FS and they felt some kind of need to either to give them a chance and/or because of public expectations.
Which proved to be quite stupid. Getting the good father son player offside.
If anything I was shocked Jackson was delisted at the time.

Or grateful because their kids at least made an AFL list and earned more money from football then the vast majority will.

Considering how frothing at the mouth a lot of people here were about letting them slide to the rookie draft, that was truly a no win situation for the club.

Really? I reckon the Crows would have given him a sliver of hope with the intention of keeping Tyson onside. It’s not the Crows fault Jackson wasn’t of AFL standard, and his dad flipped the lid. There’s obviously some delusion there. Can you imagine what Tyson would have been like if we didn’t pick up Jackson at all??

Harder to argue not being given a fair chance if no club picks him up.

Ogilvie's point was that no matter what we did with those guys, we were going to have people pissed off at us and we were likely in a no-win situation.

Rather than be thankful we even picked Jackson up, Tyson believed we completely screwed his chances of having an AFL career and that if he didn't go F/S he would have had more teams interested in him. The fact of the matter was only Sydney bothered to talk to him and even they weren't massively interested and if we didn't pick him, he likely ends up undrafted and guess what? Tyson would still probably be pissed with us.

Couldn't even make Werribee's VFL team before he got injured playing a few games for their Ammo's club Spotswood in the Western Region Football League, the highlight he kicked a goal in one game. If he was smart he'd have suited up for Glenelg and he'd be playing SANFL finals....not many AFL recruiters at Spotswood games.

Remember Mark Williams saying how poorly we treated him and how he was going to look after him? Good one Mark.

If Luke doesn't want to be at the Crows because we delisted his brother - for good reason, as has been shown subsequently - then we don't want him. What, he's such an amazing prospect that we should bend over to mollify him and his family, instead of maybe doubting his commitment?

Right now, Luke being considered as an amazing prospect isn't far from the truth at the current time.

Made the state U18 side as an underager after all, which is a massive tick. Still a lot of water to go under the bridge though.

Wouldn't be in the top 10 prospects at this point , not with me anyhow.
It will be most interesting to see how he goes against the best of the best of his peers in the U17 Futures game played as a curtain raiser to the Grand Final on the M.C.G....that's where we'll start to get a grasp on what the pecking order is for next year.

FS selections aren’t the free hit they used to be when the likes of Geelong cashed in. Today you pay slightly uders in terms of draft picks for them. If the boy is as scarred by his fathers shoulder chip as it seems, we’re better off using our picks elsewhere. It’s a shame but not that big a deal.

You’re assuming Glenelg would have played him. Pretty unlikely IMO. I know a couple of parents of players who played with Jackson under Tyson who basically blame Tyson for compromising their sons careers (draft) to give Jackson a leg up in the juniors. I don’t think too many at Glenelg (other than Tyson) thought Jackson was ever even bound for SANFL league standard.

If he doesn't nominate as f/s because he/his father have cracked the sads over Jackson, and then he's available at our pick, I'd think twice. And I wouldn't bust a gut to get him to change his mind over f/s nomination because it shouldn't be necessary to do that.

That said, we don't know what's actually going on as opposed to media speculation.

I'm sick of precious Crows players. We need to activate the sulk-meter with every new prospect.

I don’t think it’s media speculation. Tyson said they were unlikely to nominate f/s because they felt that it resulted in Jackson not getting interest from other clubs. He’s basically blaming his kid’s lack of career on f/s.

Which as any sensible person would know is ridiculous by Tyson to even half consider that. He played a season in our SANFL side which gave all the AFL recruiters a clear picture as to what level he actually sits ability wise.

Slow small guys aren't in high demand.

If Daddy wants son Luke to take his chances rather than be at home with his family and mates, then don't grizzle Tyson if he ends up at the Gold Coast.

But you will - you always do.

Scouting notes: Under-17 Futures (2019)

#18 Luke Edwards (Glenelg)

The potential Adelaide father-son has composure beyond his years and looks a versatile type. Starting in his usual half-back role, Edwards showed great composure in his disposal coming out of defence and worked hard to impact the play further afield once he had released the ball himself. His intercept marking game was also sound, reading the ball well in flight to get in the right position on defensive wing. He is the accumulating type in the backline, but looks a different player once thrown into the midfield with his strong hands and frame allowing him to play that inside game. His smart handballs out of congestion were terrific in the second half, especially at centre bounces, and he would benefit from spending more time there.
