Luke Hodge

Inasmuch as no star is like any other star maybe...but stylistically Buckley is clearly his closest historical relative (at least in the last 2 decades when I've been watching footy). Now Luke just has to continue this form for another half-dozen years ;)

If they keep him in the midfield , only injury will stop him surpassing anything Bucks did .

I just wish the umpires noticed him more. He deserves a brownlow around his neck before his career is done (lets see how he goes this year).

Reckon Buckley must be the most under rated SUPERSTAR of all time.

Would love for Hodge to be considered to have played a comparable career.

I have to disagree with that comparison.

Both Hodge and Buckley are long kicks, so they have that in comparison.

That's where the comparison should end.

Buckley was a better kick with both feet than Hodge is.

Pound for pound, Hodge would be a harder and a better contested player than Buckley.

Hodge is more like Voss than Buckley.

Hodge's attack on a contest and then the next contest is brilliant.

Everyone knows how good Bucks was . The only thing he lacked was a hard edge , everything else he did was as good as it gets . Buckley would run hard all day and will himself to get to the handball that could see him kick the winning or match sealing goal. Hodge would tear a pack apart , shrug a tackle and drill one through when needed.

Anyway, Luke Hodge is the guy you would take in the trenches any day of the week. Every single football supporter i know adores this bloke. Buddy is kicking a shit load of goals and playing great when he's not suspended or injured. But the buzz about the Hawks is the footy from Hodgey this year.

I remember being at a game watching a very young Hodge play on Archer for a quarter. Arch gave him everything , and Hodge gave back as good as he got. Absolute fukn GUN !

I remember that game too, was his 1st or 2nd season. I remember thinking this kids got balls, he won me over then and there taking it up to Arch.

I remember that game being at Telstra Dome. Night match and being pretty drunk by the end . That's the only memory i have of that game. I'll still never forget when he stood up to Arch. Arch had been the most feared player in the comp for years , and here's this young #1 Draft pick going toe to toe in every contest with The Don of all hard ****s. Pretty sure he got the chocolates on Arch that night.

Am I the only one who noticed that Hodge moved from being goal side in the stoppage where McEvoy kicked the last goal of the game? The umpire was about to bounce and he was guarding the space, but Hodge decided to run through and stand next to Hayes.

Thought it was pretty silly for no player to be guarding the line.

I noticed that, too, but it's only "silly" in hindsight...

(EDIT: the way the game was being umpired, I half expected a free kick for interfering with the bounce)

The thing I like about this bloke the most.. just seems like a great fella. Always says the right things.

I clearly didn't have the Hodge goggles on tonight and while he was pretty good in close I didn't see him as damaging as he can be. His stats actually suprised me a little.

But yeah I'd like to see him get a call up on BL night, just not sure if he's enough of a golden boy in the umps eyes.. time will tell. One things for sure it would be a humble, family and team orientated speech.

Cheers Hodgey (which is also my dogs name) your a good fella and I'm bloody glad you're a Hawk.

Now going to pat the dog whos nearly as good a fella.

...and as usual Hayes gets ignored. BOG easily.

Hodge second maybe third best.

Why do the commentators have a hardon for that kid Stratton ?...everytime the ball went near him an orgy of love began. Did nothing to warrant it. Must be their pet project at the moment.
Funnily enough I watched the game from start to finish and although I noticed Hodge a bit ,I hardly noticed Hayes.
No one stood out really on both sides as it was such a dour struggle.
Hawks should have won it though.

My thoughts are it shows how quickly we can judge kids early. Once upon a time it was Judd, Ball (small margin) then Hodge (considerable margin). If I had to choose, I'd probably have Hodge, Judd (small margin) then Ball (considerable margin).

Watts haters, beware...

Buddy always stands out. 6"6 forward flanker about to take his game to a whole new level imo.

I think they do, and I think they will!
Hodge, I think, has been very clever at detecting a change in umpiring and using it to his advantage.
Once upon a time a player taking possession of the ball was obliged to dispose of it by a handball or kick. If the ball was dislodged by a tackle it was play on.
Today, umpires (under instruction to avoid stoppages at all cost) will allow the player to dispose of it virtually anyway at all. Hodge uses this to his advantage by simply letting go of the ball in the tackle - the ball hasn't been dislodged by the tackle, he just lets go of it! technically, it's a free for dropping the ball but the umpires don't pay it.
I thought he was excellent, and how he emerged from a pack of about 8 on the wing late in the game was breathtaking.

Another great game from Hodge last night. He has been the best player thus far in 2010 IMO.

It will be interesting to see how he goes in the Brownlow though. He hasn't been a prolific vote getter, but he's playing more in the midfield this year and the the based on his free kick count the umps seem to like him.

In my opinion they should've moved him to the midfield a few years earlier.

Having said that his game at half-back probably won us a premiership, so I guess I can't complain.

Just a fantastic versatile player who is all class on and off the field.
