St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has floated the radical idea of reducing AFL games to two, soccer-style, 45-minute halves to lessen the physical impact on players and shorten a day at the footy.
Amid league-wide discussion on how to reduce the physical toll on players in games of four 30-minute quarters, Lyon said reducing the duration of games by 25 per cent would please players, coaches and fans.

I always thought we could look at something like this or that Football would eventually move in this direction.

Alternatively I also thought maybe even 2 halves of football with each coach having the right to call 1 or 2 five minute timeout's. Would lead to closer games as timeouts can be used as they are in basketball and NFL to halt a teams momentum when they are on a roll.

Because with a few exceptions, 25% of most games is boring.

Not sure I'd abandon quarters though.

Alternately you could reduce the squad to 20, and remove the 4 pockets per team - 14 on field

Bring in the nine point goal while you're at it- that's like a three pointer in basketball.

Ooh, can we have fouls as well? If you concede 6 fouls in a game you're off.

I'm all for time-outs, not sure about 45 minute halves. Footy is alot more physically taxing than soccer, not sure 45 straight minutes of it is good for anyone. Also I'm happy with overall game length left as is.

Leela: Face it, Fry. Baseball was as boring as mom and apple pie. That's why they jazzed it up.
Fry: Boring? Baseball wasn't... Wait. So they finally jazzed it up.

too fundamental a change.

maybe four 12 minute quarters, clock stops whenever the ball is not in in movement. average quarter goes 25 mins instead of 30.

What a stupid idea.

Why don't we just borrow the timing schedule of soccer, the timeouts of NFL, the scoring system of basketball.

This is AFL. The whole sport is based on how unique and one of its kind it is.

Who was calling for days at the footy to be shortened? Crowd figures keep going up annually so I can't see how the paying public don't enjoy a good, long day out.

I can't see where their shortening the length of matches provides some incentive for the AFL or the relevant stadia.

A football game will take up the evening or afternoon - it's not as if they can schedule one after the other, so they can put all games on a weekend (when we have 18 teams) as if they're turning tables like a restaurant.

The grounds will perhaps suffer less wear and clubs will get discounted for this, but the AFL is pretty stringent in not scheduling a day and night match at the same ground, unless need be. Does this ever happen, in fact?

The insular (like me) amongst us will hate the notion of returning to some archaic imperial-style halves system, and without any benefit to it for the AFL, it's dead before it starts.

Words cannot express the crapness of this idea.

YES THEY CAN.

****ING STUPID.:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::mad:

Really, cmon, let's just grab a ****ing round ball and make the pitch square, take it out of our hands and all turn into pussies and pro divers.

Shut up Ross, no one takes you seriously outside of StKilda, and this just proves it.

I think they had some double header sort of arrangement in the NAB cup a few years back.

It could be a possibility with the 18 teams but the start times etc for the game would be a bit out of whack. Gates for games usually open at least 2 hours prior. And add to that the removal of all the rubbish that is left behind.

Real innovator is Gary. The Rugby League will be lucky to have him.

Should stick to his role as "indignant straight man" on the footy show or at least attempt to coach.

It is a very demanding game. Yeah, let's watch blokes crouch over in the last 10 mins of each half because they are too shagged to do anything else.......
