Lyon calls for 45 minute halves

If you think football is ugly at the moment, wait until you have seen it played in a shorter time frame. Flooding, zoning and all that ballyhoo would become infinitely more effective and more common in shorter games, because it would be easier for teams to get their entire squads running from one 50m arc to the other for the whole game.

People need to realise that 'reduce the toll on players' and 'speed up the game' is code for 'increase coaches' ability to flood and zone the game into extinction.'

Somebody that understands what is going on.

Running from one end to the other all game is ok at Etihad but gets you killed at the MCG.

Lyon ran our team into the ground over the first 3 quarters and sunk our chance at a flag.

We will get over it a try again. Needing to shorten the game to help us win??? Nah I would rather not.

Well our game is 80 minutes plus stoppage time. Cutting out stoppage time allows teams in close games to manipulate the clock to there advantage and will cause more problems than it solves.

Jesus, talk about a bloody over-reaction to what was nothing more than an suggestion.

I see too Collingwood supporters are still hurting. Time to get over it losers. :D

Don't like the idea.

Should I throw a tanty and stamp my feet?

What happens when the new teams come in? Will there still be 22 rounds? If this was implemented then players could also play more games and fairer draw.

Not sure if serious?

Absolutely

Your smugness is beginning to stink the place up Jeff.

Your current coach is one of the prime culprits for turning modern football in to rubbish in the first place with his zoning crap.

Gee, the bloke floats an idea and this is the infantile reaction he cops?

I'm happy with the playing time as is, but I'm always open to new suggestions.

Simple games like soccer don't need to consider rule changes. Complex games like Aussie Rules do.

Real innovator is Gary. The Rugby League will be lucky to have him.

Should stick to his role as "indignant straight man" on the footy show or at least attempt to coach.

.

that extra 50cm that the MCG is longer than Etihad really murders the players, you can feel it almost instantly.

It's the width of the MCG that is the killer compared to Etihad.

but both are very short and even small compared to Manuka, TIO, Aurora and Subi.

How about we put stumps at either end instead of goals and when ever a team kicks the ball into the stumps someone from the opposition team has to leave the field. The crowd can all yell out HOWZAT and the team with the last player left on the field wins.

Lyon is a tool.

Zoning and flooding was an issue long before Lyon became a coach.

Lyon just happens to be able to coach his way through such obvious opposition tactics.

Had Lyon went the gutless "let's rebuild with youth" when he got the gig rather than having the balls to try and win from day one, he'd probably be praised for that.

In fact I'd suggest the clubs that go down this gutless path have more to do with turning modern football in to rubbish than those that use tactics to win games.

Hard to tell when you're serious sometimes Jeff. I'd suggest Ross Lyon not going the gutless "let's rebuild with youth" path had less to do with his ideals and more to do with the fact that St Kilda had done that work already by being atrocious several years earlier.

Nailed it.

Several years? There are clubs that have had priority picks since our last spoon in 2000 and are already going the rebuild path again.

Other than Goodard, who exactly were all these early picks running around last night?

Just for one year I'd like to leave the rules as they are withouth tweaking the shit out of everything.

Lyon is just looking for changes to increase his side's ability to win a GF

Not a fan of the idea myself,

but the vitriol on this board for different ideas is pathetic...

:D Just check out who they are, mindless trolls.
They are not able to come with ideas full stop. Don't worry about them.

Mindless response.

I doubt that but even if true, what exactly would be wrong or unusual about a club making a suggestion that suits them?

Typical knee-jerk reaction to the current injury 'crisis'.

What a load of BS. Every 5 years the AFL has an injury 'crisis' in some form or another. Just let the teams and players settle and evolve to overcome it.

I DO wonder though with some interchanges happening these days... is it really beneficial to the players... ie:

- Players come off for say 10 "Spells" per game.
- They have to run say 100m on average to get from their position to the bench.
- So roughly 10 "spells" * 200m = 2,000m.
- That is an extra 2kms they run per game whilst NOT IN PLAY.

I think they should:
- go back to a 2 player bench.
- allow 2/4 extra "substitute players.
- substitute players can be 'subbed' in to the game at anytime for another player.
- a 'subbed' out player can't re-enter the game (like Soccer).

*** This limits the use of the bench whilst still giving flexibility to cover inuries etc.
