News Maddy Prespakis and Georgia Gee request trade to Essendon & other possible player movements

Maddy was always going to Essendon, as i haven't had time to read this thread are we getting any compensation?

AFL hasn’t announced anything yet. But in previous years it was only if a club lost over a certain amount of players - then the league provided compensation picks. The only thing the original club could do was counter the offer, which it appears we have tried to do.

So depending on if we lose anybody else, it may be the best part of nothing 😡

Seems wrong doesn't it?

Very. Plus the expansion clubs get the first 8 picks of the draft as well so we can’t get in the pointy end there either.

The fact is * were able to offer Maddy a huge offer as a marquee signing (rumoured to be around $300,000 over two years - made up of player salary plus things like job, sponsorship, etc.), so we had no capacity to match it.

It almost feels like the foundation clubs are being punished…

When she won the "W" a couple of years ago in lockdown I thought her acceptance speech was pretty graceless. She didn't express any appreciation to the club and I don't think she even mentioned Harf. And given that she and she and Georgia have matching "Velcro" ankle tattoos it's not surprising they went as a pair.

But what will be a real kick in the guts is if the Hawks pick up Mimi Hill, who I'm pretty sure grew up as a Hawthorn supporter. She's already a star at 19 and the Hawks will have plenty of cash to splash around.

I confess I know little about the mechanics and economics of AFLW list management.
Why would people leave Carlton when we are building THE STATE OF THE ART womens facilties. The HOME of womens football. We are surely a well funded and supported team, are we not?
I keep hearing "we can't afford" them. If we cant why can others? Is there not a salary cap?
Why expand a league when there isnt enough quality to go around as it is?
The AFL had better be careful as it may dilute an already poor standard of footy and leave it open to ridicule.

Essendon has a full time Women's coach - we do not.
Essendon's program allows the women players full time access to their facilities, gym, etc - ours does not.
Essendon being an expansion club gives them additional ambassadorship allowances, relocation assistance etc - we don't have that.

She signed a two-year deal last year despite expansion having already been announced. Seems pretty happy, and alluded to continuing on with us in her Rising Star acceptance speech (“Hopefully we can stay together and keep getting better.”). I don’t think she’s going anywhere.

I may regret this but, why?

It is incredibly frustrating. Essentially losing your top 2 players, or 2 of your top 3 players (whichever way you cut it). But it is unsurprising that something like this happens as part of the expansion. It is just terribly $hit luck that two key players have been pillaged from the one team. It's a business, there's minimal loyalty while the league very much is in its infancy, and the horrible start to the season coupled with missing finals probably left a poor taste in the mouth. Just invest in the development of the players you have and do what you can in the off season to add players that will result in an instant improvement. Easier said than done of course.

How many players have left Adelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane or Melbourne that those clubs wanted to keep?
Ask about Adelaide again after Port join. It looks like they're going to lose Erin Phillips, for one.

There was a Freo supporter earlier in the thread who didn't seem too happy with the players that they lost when WC joined the comp.

I can't remember who Brisbane lost, but I'd think it was similar.

Melbourne is the only comparable club, and it's much easier to keep players when they're vying for flags (as we all know).

Ask the football director or the chairman for the first two.

Why don't we get retention allowance? Because the aflw wants the new clubs to be competitive at the cost of the existing clubs, given the limited player pool.
And yet they are adding how many more sides? They will f this up for eveyone! It will give the naysayers amunination to say, see, I told ya womens footy is shit.
why what?
why don't we have what you say Esendon has. We've been at it for how long? we have a purpose built, state of the art training facility all but built. It makes no sense.

I wish I knew.

Okay, so Prespakis and Gee get to go to Essendon as free agents, despite Maddie's contracted status.

Articles say that we chose not to match the offers in order to save our salary cap. I was not aware we could match and stop it from happening. I'm pretty sure that is not the case. If the player wants to go, too bad for us under the expansion rules.

If they are considered free agents though, then surely compensation is still a chance? There is nothing concrete anywhere about this.

If we do get compensation, this could be a good thing for us. Gee can be good but she is a Jack Martin type of opportunistic. If we can get a player who is quick and physical, that would be a positive.

As far as Maddie goes, she is good in packs and good at finding shorter options. She has no penetration on her kicks, is not a noted goalkicker and is slow. Her asset is really her ability to see the play unfold. A really good football brain without the athletic characteristics to capitalise on it.

An early draft pick to replace Maddie might allow us to get more run in the midfield. Get McEvoy in there with Egan if she stays or let O'Dea take the hits for a couple of years and get some silk around them. Good kicks with leg speed.

Not great, seems to be a pattern of players leaving every year.
In saying that, we are miles off the best clubs like Adelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane, Melbourne. They have height, strength and speed on every line.
At the end of the day we have lost a slow, short midfielder and a 30 kg forward who struggles to get much of the footy.
Meh.

I remember another "slow, short midfielder" at Carlton. His name was Diesel Williams.
