When the first wave of expansion came in the new clubs were allowed to offer longer term deals than the rest of the league
Entirely false.

Out of interest, the WNBA has had a stable product and participation through junior level for how long, been established for how long, etc? Is the comparison between the WNBA - which I know nothing about - and AFLW an apt one, in your opinion?
My comparison was more so in the talent required to put together the diff comps;
18 * 25 = 450 is a lot more than 12 * 10 = 120, and the WNBA has well over 100 college programs + internationals to recruit from.

Yet it still has mediocre attendance/broadcast numbers and runs at an annual loss in the millions, despite the very high skill level on court.

Always in some danger of losing good players when you’re an average side.

Look at Essendon (men’s) in 2020.

Why stay when you’re unhappy, there’s a distinct lack of progression with the squad and you’re going to get paid more to jump into a team that’ll likely outperform your current side in the short-mid term? It’s actually a no brainer.

Hopefully the club assumes some responsibility and does whatever it needs to to get better.

Losing star players an a yearly basis speaks to wholesale mediocrity.

Wtf, surely that can, and should, be challenged in court

I was a bit meh about it all until I read that

I'm reading different accounts about this. She may not be contracted after all, but still the point remains, expansion clubs can approach contracted players.

Okay, so Prespakis and Gee get to go to Essendon as free agents, despite Maddie's contracted status.

Articles say that we chose not to match the offers in order to save our salary cap. I was not aware we could match and stop it from happening. I'm pretty sure that is not the case. If the player wants to go, too bad for us under the expansion rules.

If they are considered free agents though, then surely compensation is still a chance? There is nothing concrete anywhere about this.

If we do get compensation, this could be a good thing for us. Gee can be good but she is a Jack Martin type of opportunistic. If we can get a player who is quick and physical, that would be a positive.

As far as Maddie goes, she is good in packs and good at finding shorter options. She has no penetration on her kicks, is not a noted goalkicker and is slow. Her asset is really her ability to see the play unfold. A really good football brain without the athletic characteristics to capitalise on it.

An early draft pick to replace Maddie might allow us to get more run in the midfield. Get McEvoy in there with Egan if she stays or let O'Dea take the hits for a couple of years and get some silk around them. Good kicks with leg speed.

Couple of great girls at Western Jets, Ham and Baskaran - if we can get either of those we’d have Prespakis covered.

I remember another "slow, short midfielder" at Carlton. His name was Diesel Williams.
And maybe in another 30 years this can stop being the default reply
Diesel had the skills to use his footy brain. Maddie is 50/50 on that score. Tough as nails and great in a grinding game. Really struggles in an open flowing game.
Yes, Maddie needs to get roughly the same chat Gary Ablett Junior copped at about the same point in his career, though he had a positional change to make alongside that.
The WNBA has a large talent pool to draw from (college bball) and they only have 12 teams, with only 5 starters/team and they've struggled to put together an entertaining product that is financially viable since the league was founded ~25 years ago.

I really don't understand the rush to have 18 teams in the AFLW.

What gap in the market is being addressed by adding more teams to the competition?

Anecdotally, the quality of the on-field product is currently a key barrier to generating increased interest & revenue. Further diluting the talent available to every team will detrimentally impact this further.

It's great that girls now have an option to pursue Aussie Rules at a level equivalent to their male peers, but this quick expansion appears fraught with peril.
In both cases, the answer is the preparedness of haphazardly managed business models to divert revenue. They wind up hiding behind casually sexist arguments, and talk of saturation/overload of games for the public.

The revenue figures for the AFL are genuinely absurd, so much so that it's somehow in the conversation for the top 20 earnings of all sporting leagues in the world. But nothing's changing so long as Dangerfield is heading up the AFLPA, because he making those same dumbass arguments.

The first fundamental move from here is that there should be a required commitment to sharing facilities and staff wherever possible. Make that basic investment in them as athletes and they will flourish. Not enough of the clubs have come to the table on this, and the AFL can make a change to see to it the money comes out of the currently engorged men's game.

Last time I looked it up, she'd signed on to 2022. But given that they're only contracted for 6 months of the year (one of DV's issues) I assume that means she's now out of contract, since the 2022 season is finished. I know there looks like being a second 2022 season, but that wouldn't have been factored in when they did that last contract.

Not going to happen unless they fall outside the top 8 of the draft. Those picks go to the 'stains and hawks. Then you've got, what, 5 more picks before our first pick?

Good read. One physio for 31 players is nuts. Funding your own medical expenses is nuts.

We need to get this in front of our board and apply pressure.
Just to be clear ODN, Mim was talking about girls she'd spoken to from other clubs (who outsourced their knee recoveries). She was glowing in her praise of the support that the Blues had given her.

I mean all of the issues. I'm not sure how much access our players have to all of our medical staff but I want to make sure they get the same access the men do. The training facilities too.

yes 100% correct, as reported by Carlton Media on Aug 17, 2020, she signed in 2020 a 2 year contract, uncontracted now

expansion clubs can approach contracted players.
yes 100% correct
to the expansion teams contracts aren't worth anything, in regards to players that they want to sign
it's a AFL rule for the women's comp & the AFL run and pay for the comp, not the clubs

free agency signings aren't like the mens, there is no compensation what so ever
no draft picks, nothing but a lose, lose situation

It's crazy to me that the new clubs can take up to 4 players from each club and they could be their 4 best players, meaning they are stacked while the other clubs are decimated. Then they get all of the prime draft picks as well. The AFL are creating a two tiered system that is going to be very hard to recover from.

After the initial shock...
Really don't care that Prespakis and Gee are gone, clubs bigger than any player...
Bit peeved that we get no compensation...

But what I'm worried about, is if Carlton lose young girl supporters, because their favourite players have jumped ship...
Or female supporters of the AFLW because it's been run as a joke...

I felt like the player divide involved Maddie somehow. It's a bit of a shame if we let players leave in order to keep the gun player but she left anyway.

I still like what we are building. The first coach and recruiters built a team of hard hitting players at a time when skills were low. All of those players are being found out now aside from a select few who have grown their game after leaving us i.e Tilly Lucas-Rodd.

I hope we are working on a key forward or two though.

yeah, you're right up to a point, it's looking like the EPL from overseas, same sides in the finals, same sides struggling at the bottom
can't see it changing anytime soon unfortunately

on your point regarding
"new clubs can take up to 4 players from each club and they could be their 4 best players, meaning they are stacked while the other clubs are decimated."
that's not necessarily true, it can't happen

each club is bound by the TPP & the CBA
the AFL, who are running the comp, would not allow the above 2 cases to be breached
there is a tier system also that constrains the ability for one club to load up on the best players

also the payment outside the TPP, called "marketing allowance",for club appearances & photo shoots, after game interviews and such
this is finite & is capped to around 100K for the top 3-4 players

the big money kickers are
Additional Service Agreements, Independent Agreements and Employment Agreements
these include sponsorship's, jobs, cars, housing, all sorts of things you can think of

clubs have all kinds of arrangements for different players which are paid for in varying amounts per player outside the TPP
so the best 3-4 players at each club, connecting the dots, tells me most clubs will not have a situation where 3 or 4 of their best AFLW players leave for more money.

when Tigers ditched their VFLW team, guess where the saving of 250-300K went
to our best 2 players Conti & Brennan and the others we want to keep

Carlton is running a tight ship dependent on sponsors, membership money, gate takings etc, the press release said as much
but my best guess is 70% mens, 30% womens split, probably all teams give or take

Prespakis is their marquee player, even though there is no such thing anymore, druggies would probably have 1 maybe 2 more of this type of offer for someone of Prespakis's talent

don't worry, they won't be some sort of force to be reckoned with, neither will Sydney, Power or Hawks
take the hit now & build on your decent squad for the future
