I remember another "slow, short midfielder" at Carlton. His name was Diesel Williams.

Diesel had the skills to use his footy brain. Maddie is 50/50 on that score. Tough as nails and great in a grinding game. Really struggles in an open flowing game.

Maddy, you were the first AFLW player that I adored and I hope you don't come to regret your decision to join the Scum in future years but for now

Yes I am a Bitter Blue and proud to admit it !!!
:carlton: 4 life.

Don't think she's contracted?
Surely they can't break contracts?

Yeah, apparently was contracted for another year. Yes, the expansion clubs can treat contracted players as free agents.

I wish I knew.

Just make something up MEB. You know how dumb these plebs are ... they won't know the difference.

Oh, and don't let this get outside of our PM. That would be awkward.

AFLW is musical chairs at the end of every season.

Can’t help but feel the AFL is butchering this project.

Another expansion? Surely not.

There’s maybe 10 teams right now that could field a somewhat competitive side.
Unfortunately until the competition has a stable talent pool (~5 years away) this is going to continue to happen and teams will be destroyed because of it. There is also a huge 'play with the girls' factor to AFLW currently as it's not their primary career interest right now. When the girls are making six figures at a minimum you'll see more unity to the club.

I'm excited for what AFLW has to offer in the next few years, some serious athletes coming in now. The first year or so was very much amateurish in feel, now I look at 90%+ of the girls and think they look like legitimate athletes. The skills are getting better too, the problem is that the girls don't have the legs to make up ground as quickly as the blokes and can't kick as far so it's more difficult to break lines. I reckon it'll eventually be 16 on 16 and your smaller, Eliza McNamara types that run all day will be at a premium. As will your stay-at-home forwards, who will probably become taller and bigger, as they did in the AFL.

I don't think they are butchering the product, they are just expanding too quickly. But, the grassroots support will suffice the growth undoubtedly.

When she won the "W" a couple of years ago in lockdown I thought her acceptance speech was pretty graceless. She didn't express any appreciation to the club and I don't think she even mentioned Harf. And given that she and she and Georgia have matching "Velcro" ankle tattoos it's not surprising they went as a pair.

But what will be a real kick in the guts is if the Hawks pick up Mimi Hill, who I'm pretty sure grew up as a Hawthorn supporter. She's already a star at 19 and the Hawks will have plenty of cash to splash around.

Surely the AFL will block that.

The WNBA has a large talent pool to draw from (college bball) and they only have 12 teams, with only 5 starters/team and they've struggled to put together an entertaining product that is financially viable since the league was founded ~25 years ago.

I really don't understand the rush to have 18 teams in the AFLW.

What gap in the market is being addressed by adding more teams to the competition?

Anecdotally, the quality of the on-field product is currently a key barrier to generating increased interest & revenue. Further diluting the talent available to every team will detrimentally impact this further.

It's great that girls now have an option to pursue Aussie Rules at a level equivalent to their male peers, but this quick expansion appears fraught with peril.

THE FOUR expansion clubs will be able to sign up to 14 current AFLW players in a special 'expansion signing period', in proposed rules released by the AFL on Monday.

Essendon, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Sydney will join the NAB AFLW competition ahead of the 2022-23 season, rounding out all 18 clubs

AFL hasn’t announced anything yet. But in previous years it was only if a club lost over a certain amount of players - then the league provided compensation picks. The only thing the original club could do was counter the offer, which it appears we have tried to do.

So depending on if we lose anybody else, it may be the best part of nothing 😡

yeah you're half right
counter offer is correct, but foundation clubs weren't given compensation picks, never have
only expansion clubs were given this, depending on their list builds pre draft

the only way foundation clubs were compensated was to exceed their quota of players lost (4 players for Vic clubs)
then any other player lost would have to be traded for with draft picks

Tigers got Brennan as free agent, but had to trade pick No 1 for Conti (Dogs lost 4 players by that time)

i'm not advocating losing another 3 players to get a fair compensation result for Prespakis, but that seems to be the landscape
given she has left so early doesn't seem the druggies want to pay fair compensation at all

the decent & right thing that Prespakis should at least do is, as a requirement of her leaving, the druggies hand over their top pick
that way Carlton is fairly compensated for time & money spent on her development

will this eventuate ?
i hope so, but doubt it
maybe the rules will change this last expansion, but it's the AFL and i wouldn't put my money on it

what the Blues should do is attack Melbourne's list and try to get a Hanks, Zander and Bannan to come over
pay decent $'s for 2 of these players and replace Prespakis & Gee,

just my thoughts

Out of interest, the WNBA has had a stable product and participation through junior level for how long, been established for how long, etc? Is the comparison between the WNBA - which I know nothing about - and AFLW an apt one, in your opinion?

This is the most damning item from the list of issues; from Mimi Hill:

"Other AFLW players, they have actually outsourced, found someone themselves rather than going through the club because they wanted to get the best support for their knee and they didn't feel like they were getting that at their club,"
I was totally gobsmacked when I heard her say that on the W podcast. Whichever club(s) they were should have their licence reconsidered.

fu** being one of the clubs who laid the groundwork for the AFLW with the league bending over backwards to gift Johnny come latelies early success.

League is f’ed.
That is the thing that annoys me the most.
We would be better off coming into the competition now and not having to do the hard work in the early years.
